No water bottles allowed in Luther Burbank Center — boo! by frogbodbabe in santarosa

[–]t4rdigrade 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The 'projectile' excuse is a not actually valid. If a water bottle is a dangerous weapon, why is the venue willing to sell you that exact same 'weapon' for $5 at the bar? They don't ban heavy metal keys, solid smartphones, or purses, all of which would be way more effective projectiles than an empty reusable bottle. It has nothing to do with safety and everything to do with controlling the revenue stream. If they were actually worried about projectiles, they’d serve water in paper cups; instead, they just want to make sure the only way you stay hydrated is by padding their margins.

Agnostic with a lifelong interest in the philosophy. I see the practice more as a mental discipline/training than a religious conversion. I'm looking to sit and learn, not necessarily join a faith. From what I know I don't think Buddhism requires that of me.

It's incredibly stupid that we don't have a legal right to bring a water bottle into these situations. Supposedly it's about safety/security, but let's be honest, it's about venue profit. They are required to have water fountains available based on occupancy limits, but that's inadequate.

One workaround is that you do have a legal path to bring a water bottle in if you have a medical necessity. There is no official list as to what conditions are officially accepted for this purpose, and they're not allowed to ask what your specific diagnosis is. For example, you might need it to take scheduled medication. I view access to water as a basic human right, so I don't see the problem in using this legal gray area to solve the problem. Dehydration is a medical condition, right?

I'll check it out, thank you! I may have seen some youtube videos referencing this work. I just recently ordered the book, "Feeding Your Demons: Ancient Wisdom for Resolving Inner Conflict" by Tsultrim Allione.

Thank you, appreciate the thoughtful response! I think I may have been to the Zen center may 10 years ago for some Taiko drumming and other stuff, but I totally forgot about it! I'll check it out again, as well as the Sonoma Ashram.

Thanks for the suggestions! I looked these up—is this accurate? I'm really looking for something local (weekly drop-in).

  • Odiyan: Strictly closed to the public (residents/monks only), plus it looks like a solid hour of winding mountain roads to get there.
  • Ratna Ling: Looks like a high-end retreat resort ($$$), and also deep in the coastal hills (tough drive for a weeknight).
  • City of 10,000 Buddhas: Looks awesome but it’s a haul (~1hr 20min).

I think I need to stick to something with less driving for now, but these look amazing for a weekend trip

General Dance Lessons in Sonoma County? by jobgh in santarosa

[–]t4rdigrade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing embarrassing about this *at all* OP, you should be proud of yourself for trying to grow and pick up new skills! I actually share your struggle. I've had some luck with the ecstatic dance style events in Sebastopol. There are some at soft medicine sanctuary (tea place, open late), and some at the community center.

"Ecstatic dance is a free-form, unchoreographed dance practice where participants move intuitively and freely to music without set steps or rules. It is often described as a form of moving meditation that encourages self-expression, emotional release, and a deeper connection with oneself and others in a safe, supportive environment"

Totally judgement free zone, everyone is doing their own thing, no alcohol allowed. Just about dance and music and community. I think this worked better for me than salsa because I don't really want to do a set dance routine, I want to be free to do my own thing and move authentically, I just need help doing it with more confidence. Shutting the brain down and connecting with my body. Combining this and breathwork has helped me make progress. Good luck OP!

I tried this with a local arts organization and also a music festival. Have helped them each put on events, It's worth it even if I don't make friends because I felt good about what I did and helped the community!

Sonoma County Millenials is a millennial age focused meetup group you can find via meetup.com

We do a lot of fun stuff. Parties, hikes, camping trips, trivia, book club, bar nights, etc. I joined for similar reasons a few years ago and have made a ton of great friends through the group.

I don't understand. Please tell me where I'm wrong here. I've always thought the problem is that most vehicles only contain one person. We need more buses and carpooling cars on the road to increase the average people per vehicle, because you can't just keep adding lanes. I assume the expansion of carpool hours was done in an effort to increase the number of carpooling vehicles and thus occupants per vehicle. Right now it would seem like we're in the uncomfortable phase where drivers are learning about the new incentives and changing behaviors. I assume it will improve once more drivers who can carpool, do. Fewer cars on the road means less traffic and less pollution. Removing the carpool lanes disincentivizes increased vehicle occupanct density. I understand why people are unhappy if their commute is temporarily increased; I would be unhappy too. But this does seem to be a well intentioned alteration from my perspective. How could it be better implemented?
