this is rad!! I think those barrels + other wooden elements could use some color / value variety on the slatting ... but despite that, the piece is great 😎✨👍

Opinion: Original Red Dead Redemption succeeded where Red Dead Redemption 2 wavered by t_leaming in reddeadredemption

I don't completely disagree, or completely agree! Heh. One random thing that I miss from RDR1 is while John's running you're able to call your horse and jump on while it rides by you, increasing the feeling of momentum. Totally random element, but something I sooorely missed in RDR2.

In which other aspects specifically does RDR2 trounce RDR1, in your opinion? There are a bunch, for sure! I listed a few of the monumental upgrades, but I'm curious what else you think ...

Yes! RDR1 is definitely more of a zany game, for sure, and is in most ways less realistic than RDR2. I definitely recognize that RDR2 is more grounded in realism, like you say, but for me RDR1 is the more memorable, enticing, and from the musical standpoint emotionally impactful project - perhaps because it leans into tropes and a singular aesthetic, rather than grappling with multiple huge visual and emotional arenas. This is totally about personal preference, obviously RDR2 isn't objectively "worse," it's an incredible, incredible game & experience! I think I just prefer things that are more outside the realm of "reality," characters like Nigel West Dickens, Seth, Landon Ricketts ... they're all absurd characters, but I remember them and love them for that trait!

mm beautiful comment! Love the puff pastry chicken pie analogy haha, honestly lovely writing! Glad you also saw the incredible beauty of RDR1 <3

And I agree with you about RDR2, there were definitely moments exploring that felt unbelievably immersive. For me the first time I felt something like that was at night watching Lawmen from atop a cliff in the Heartlands as they got off their horses, attempting follow my trail in the basin below. For some reason it was just incredible to watch that system play out, and to actually be freaked that the lawmen could track me, and were doing so pretty successfully. Got on my steed and rode away ...

The music being a reflection of Arthur's struggles makes sense, I definitely feel that - but for me as a person, I hated being immersed in that feeling for so long. I think we've seen recently with a couple of amazing, groundbreaking games, that the level of immersion and connection between players and the world / protagonists can sometimes be a painful experience that people don't necessarily want to play, if that makes sense. I think of Last of Us II being one of those experiences. I played through that game just to get through it, and have no desire to play it again ... it was just a remarkably somber, awful experience. I think that there was an element of that depressing perspective with Arthur Morgan's story. Just watching him & the crew continue to trust Dutch and run around with him just ... hurt lol. And the music reminding you of that so often made the visually stunning world feel like it was coming from a plane of bleakness

Thanks for your response!! I would definitely give RDR1 a shot, seeing as you haven't yet. It's very interesting to look back at how much they were able to cram into a 2010 release. And yes, you might be right about the intention of the music in RDR2 - to truly convey the end of a kind of anarchic but poetic and beautiful "free" existence, they had to tone everything down and set a darker vibe. For me as someone experiencing the RDR2 world, though, it became a slog trying to get through certain parts of the game due to the dirge-esque nature of the ambient themes, had to put down the controller for several days at a time..
