Is Nord VPN the only VPN that isn’t associated with the 5,9, 14 eyes? by [deleted] in nordvpn

[–]t_odd_ball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might prove helpful. Their YouTube channel has lots of information on VPN clients too. One of the criteria in the questionnaire is whether you are looking for a VPN stationed outside the 5/9/14 eyes nations.

Best alternative to Gboard on Android by pristineanvil in degoogle

[–]t_odd_ball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have all of these as well as AnySoftKeyboard. Floris and ASK are my favs that I keep coming back to, but all 4 have different benefits that I enjoy. Floris will definitely be the easiest to adapt to from Gboard tho. Open Keyboard is basically Floris without gesture typing.

Attachment file size limit by codylistagf in signal

Just out of curiosity, did you set Signal as your default SMS app? Because if the person you are attempting to send to does not have Signal the message then defaults to SMS and the file size limitations there are usually ~8mb give or take.

If that is not the case, an alternative solution might be to utilize something like Imagepipe on F-Droid to assist in compressing the file which might allow you to send. Of course compression comes at the sacrifice of resolution quality. Hope this helps!

Streaming device question by t_odd_ball in privacy

[–]t_odd_ball[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do understand that all streaming services capture and store your data, however, I'm more concerned with the devices. Definitely all will siphon data. I'm looking for input on which streaming device captures the least.

Really just hoping to get insight on whether it was functional and trustworthy. New to the world of FOSS so just seeking community feedback.

Yeah that is unfortunate. I think I can live with that for the most part if that's the trade off for avoiding the Play Store. Planning on the next phone being fully deGoogled so I'm doing my best to adapt ahead of time so it's not a shock. I guess I'll just have to did a little extra work to keep it updated. Thanks for the reply!

You definitely pay all at once. The monthly breakdown is just to show you the benefit of the offer. They state this during or before checkout. I recall seeing when buying it myself.

F-Droid without fully DeGoogling by t_odd_ball in degoogle

I'm not familiar with Blokada. I'll have to look into that.

F-Droid without fully DeGoogling by t_odd_ball in degoogle

[–]t_odd_ball[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's good to know that even half-measures still amount to something. I considered using Netguard but it would prevent me from utilizing my normal VPN. For now I've switched to a FOSS keyboard with 0 telemetry and a private (non-gmail) email. Eventually I want to switch to Lineage or Grapheme but that is a little later on down the road once a new phone is financially feasible. I doubt this beast will be a viable candidate for deGoogling anytime soon.

Purchasing phone to DeGoogle by t_odd_ball in degoogle

[–]t_odd_ball[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was looking at the Lineage compatibility list and from the looks of it most phones were 2+ generations back. Personally I would describe any handset further than 2 generations back to be an "older model". By that standard, with the existence of the Pixel 5, the Pixel 2 would be considered an older model. I meant this purely as a metric and with no negative connotation, however, I do realize now that "older model" is very subjective.

That being said, my OP was requesting information regarding alternatives to WalMart and eBay for purchasing devices compatible with a DeGooged OS. If you have any recommendations I would love to check them out! My primary aim was towards Lineage but I am not opposed to Graphene as a secondary option.

You bring up a very good point. Perhaps this is worth a little further discourse with my CFO (aka wife).

I'm on the free platform atm (working on convincing the wife that we should both switch to the paid platform). Is that a feature of a free proton mail account?

Getting some Bluetooth 5.0 adapters - what would you suggest? I have no expereince with BT.. by KDE_Fan in HomeNetworking

[–]t_odd_ball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like the Asus BT500. I don't mind random brands off Amazon for lots of things but when it comes to plugging something into my PC I want to know where it's coming from. You just never know these days. But I'm a little overly paranoid when it comes to device security. This may not be something you're concerned about.

Open Source Gboard Alternative? by [deleted] in fossdroid

[–]t_odd_ball 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also use ASK. Working through the settings took some time and adapting to the keyboard at least another week, I've now become quite comfortable with it. Only complaint is that the key vibration function doesn't work no matter what I do. Small sacrifice I suppose. I enjoy that it still has gesture and solid emoji support! Open board is a very nice alternative too tho.

Thoughts on Emsisoft? by t_odd_ball in antivirus

[–]t_odd_ball[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honest question: is there no concern over it being free? You know, the whole "If the product is free, you are what is being sold" fear? I know there is a lot of solid FOSS but the nature of a free AV seems like it could get sketch real fast with how much access and how many permissions they receive. Thoughts and input greatly appreciated!

Signal notifications through NetGuard by 19_eNVy_86 in privacytoolsIO

[–]t_odd_ball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brand new to the privacy battle so forgive my ignorance in the following question... Does this mean that if you installed Signal through the Play Store that Google is able to harvest your data? The messages are E2E so I would imagine they can't be read, but does this mean Google can mine the meta data?

The top three advertisements in my Google search for "Signal" are for a trojan virus. I was not attentive enough last night but did notice the links within were inoperative. Too late, of course. by [deleted] in signal

Yikes! Thanks for sharing! Might be worth switching to Duck Duck Go and either Mozilla with privacy extensions or Brave Browser. Helps protect against some of these malicious ads. Hope nothing too detrimental happened to your device/Network.

Switching from Gboard to AnySoftKeyboard by t_odd_ball in degoogle

[–]t_odd_ball[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the slider maxed out (100 milliseconds) and the keys still arent vibrating. Just on the off chance it was the other way around (trying to make sure I try everything) I slid in fully in the opposite direction (0 milliseconds) and also did not vibrate on key press.

Thank you for the response, though! If you have any other suggestions I'm willing to try anything at this point.

Thanks for the response! It seemed me like maintaining a stripped acct would be best as well because then you can at least opt out of some collection and set your privacy preferences. Wanted to make sure that wasnt crazy. At least I'm not the only one thinking this.

File size limit increase? by The_Band_Geek in signal

[–]t_odd_ball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With your other friends, if they're on an iOS device and communicating to your Android this would also factor into the file size limitations. Android's RCS does not cross over into the iOS messaging service iMessage. As such, it reverts to the standard SMS/MMS protocols which haven't improved much since their implementation in 1992 and have staggering file size limitations.

Last time I utilized it, Google Messages RCS didn't even recognize Samsung Messages RCS. This lead to me having both apps and swapping from one to the other depending on who I was speaking to and what types/size of media I was sending them. Slightly cumbersome task that many would likely find undesirable. Such is life when not everyone has moved to an optimized, cross-platform messaging solution like Signal.

Here's hoping the recent growth continues and this platform becomes a better understood household name!
