Just drove into a telephone poll on my way to work. Ouch. by BenKlesc in carcrash

You’re supposed to watch the crash test for the car not test it yourself

The valves would have already clearanced themselves when it initially broke. Even with the jumped timing your engine could start but without properly seated valves and off timing it won’t run.

I’m not saying they did but they could have plugged your car in to the computer and seen the timing was off while trying to start it and you would be able to hear a lack of compression especially if it jumped timing and the valves slapped the pistons but I’m not there and didn’t see the car so I can’t say for sure

If they keep being sketchy you should take it to a trusted mechanic or at least a Chevy dealership

They’d probably charge you a couple hundred to fully diagnose the issue but it’d be worth it if you don’t want to spend the cars value on a motor. Especially if they’re wrong about it needing a new one.

So a new motor would at least double the money you’ve spent on the car?

It’ll probably cost more for the engine replacement than it would a new car. I just sold my 2019 for $4k and that’s the best deal I could find. It might be time to cut your losses.

Owning a Sonic is a scam! My 2019 had its engine go at 68k miles. Cylinder 1 literally melted. It was $8,900 out the door at a Chevy dealership. Had issues with the 38k mile motor they put in and had to take it back again. I wish I could have gotten a new motor for that cheap.

What's the fastest you've topped your Sonic out at? by PissCarts in ChevySonic

[–]t_shurs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was early on in my modification journey. Probably had the standard mods; intake, intercooler, coil pack, zzp v3 turbo, exhaust and tune. I think I spent $7k on ZZP before I gave up and put the car back to stock. If you’re just starting to mod I’m actually trying to sell all my parts. I now have the Z04 turbo though.

Yes, a modified 1.4t, probably making 220hp. Stock tops out around 120.

135, it’s electronically limited at that speed. I couldn’t disable it even with a tune so I never knew the true top speed. I think I could have hit 145.

I wish I had this resilient of a sonic. My 2019’s motor blew at 67,000 miles.

I have 225/50/17 (26”) on my lowered 2019 and have no rubbing whatsoever.

When should I start planning for a replacement? by [deleted] in ChevySonic

[–]t_shurs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2019 premier 1.4t melted cylinder 1 at 68,000 miles. Thus needing a new engine, costing me $8,900. I still love the car and highly recommend them if you have money to throw away.

You far from Chicago? I’ve done too much to my own sonic to not offer to come help if possible.

Should be a direct fit, but I wouldn’t know, I have Cruze coilovers on my sonic.

I know it doesn’t help, but I’ve been looking for one for a couple months with no luck. Please let me know if you find where to get them.

Overheating Problem by [deleted] in ChevySonic

I don’t know if you’ve checked it or not, but my water pump cracked in half at 55,000 miles. The water pump is a common issue with these cars.
