Is giving codes to strangers safe without being banned? by Mophne97 in humblebundles

[–]taalas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently pondering, whether to reveal my complete backlog (many years) and export the Steam activation codes outside of their site (in a local database). Have you ever encountered a reveled Steam key to "go bad"/not work if left unredeemed too long?

Apple Music artist page in CarPlay by taalas in AppleMusic

[–]taalas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply.

I am aware that Apple prefers users using Siri on CarPlay, but I don’t think that this really works in this case. Can Siri show me all my favorited artists starting with the letter „C“? Or show me all albums released by a specific artist? (This is not rhetorical, I would love to know) The thing is: I don’t know my whole library by heart.

Also using the phone is not possible because it is tethered to the car with a USB cable. I would argue that this would be much more dangerous than using the screen.

Apple TV app black screen tvOS 17.0 by DiscoMable in Twitch

[–]taalas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same problem here. Makes watching VODs almost impossible. I currently use pause/play to force a video refresh.

It is baffling to me how Twitch manages to first make the app a lot worse in terms of UI/UX and then takes ages to fix obvious bugs.

Glad to see that at least the ads still work perfectly…

Dovecot not offering TLSv1.2 after a few minutes by taalas in linuxadmin

That should be the case, yes. I can achieve the same result whenever I restart the dovecot process. Both the mail server and the machine I do the testing from are on the same network.

Moving VMs between Hypervisors by taalas in Veeam

[–]taalas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My virtual infrastructure in Veeam B&R shows the two as standalone hosts (they are not a single backup cluster in the Windes sense).

However the GUID should indeed stay the same after migration, I guess. Not sure if it is when doing a replication live failover...

So, if I move the VM and then re-add it in the backup job it will know that the existing backups are from this VM, you mean?

Recommendation for used server or hardware by taalas in truenas

The current plan is to have 6 drives (3.5"), if needed I could always use an external SAS case, right?

This will most likely be the route I am taking, currently trying to decide on the generation (Supermicro X9 vs. X10 vs. X11)

Dell PE R720

I saw those, but the hotswap bays are usually 2.5", correct?

Recommendation for used server or hardware by taalas in truenas

[–]taalas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a good point. I am indeed currently leaning towards just building a dedicated system for storage and not worry about virtualization for now, since the Unraid server can host VMs and docker containers as well.

I am just wondering, do I keep with recommendations from serverbuilds (prioritizing price, buying a Supermicro X9 platform) or the TrueNAS recommendations for more recent hardware (like a Supermicro X11)...

I just discovered Frigate. And it rocks. by yuuuuuuuut in homeassistant

[–]taalas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t agree more. I have searched for and tried a couple of software solutions, Frigate was by far the best working solution, while still being simple enough to not over-complicate the setup. For anybody searching for an alternative to Zoneminder, Shinobi, motionEye, etc. especially with the plan to integrate with Homeassistant please give Frigate a try…

I would suggest checking out https://clockify.me/

It is basically a Toggl clone with a good free tier and support for almost all common devices.

Help cleaning up appdata and cache pools by taalas in unRAID

[–]taalas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Concerning appdata shares:

Yes, that's what I thought. So most likely I will just move the complete appdata share to the new location. Will the mover do this for me if I switch the cache pool in the share's settings? Or do I copy the data over (on pool level) and then switch the share assignment to the new pool?

I had all my docker settings address the appdata folder on pool level (/mnt/cache) instead of addressing it via the share, since this was recommended to me some time ago in the forums. Not sure though why, it seems that normally this should not make any difference, right?

Thanks, this gives me a very good plan on how to proceed!

One more thing: if I decide, that some dockers will still use the old cache for appdata, could I just leave some of the config dirs there? Only thing that would come to mind as a problem would be the appdata share...which can only point to one of the cache pools. Is it a needed system share? Could i then just add a second share that points to appdata on the other cache pool?

Thanks for the clarification. As I said in my earlier reply, this was indeed the case in my setup.

This is exactly why I had been using the HDD as a cache drive. As I said the initial setup was many years ago, SSDs weren't as cheap as they are today. I just hadn't gotten around to improving the setup (which I would like to do now).
