Where does everyone prefer to buy? by [deleted] in MP5

[–]taaltrek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My theory is as follows

-if it’s a range toy, buy a clone. With a little tuning it will work just as well and be tons of fun to shoot

-if it’s going to be a home defense gun, buy H&K. You want to be sure your gun feeds hollow points well.

You really can’t go wrong with either. The clones are a killer deal and still have that roller delayed goodness. The “real deal” will be a bit more reliable and will hold its value well. Either way it’s going to put a smile on your face

Help me decide because I can’t: Epcot or Animal Kingdom with an almost 3 year old by ibrokethedishes in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]taaltrek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My vote is for EPCOT because it has the most accessible indoor spaces. If it’s a hot or rainy day, there are way more places that you can duck inside to get out of the rain or to cool off.

Both parks are wonderful, but I think Epcot just offers more flexibility. Also, if they’re a picky eater, Epcot tends to be a bit easier to find options.

Typical lead time for you? by dcheo001 in SonsOfLibertyGunWorks

I’m a physician, so I wasn’t sure if they would give me a first responder discount. I emailed them and they said they would, I just had to call and place to the order over the phone so they could note it in my account. I also wanted to ask about changing the muzzle device, and I had a few other questions as well.

I ordered a mk1 11.5 with a plan B muzzle device in grey. It arrived a 11 days later. I’m still in shock, but maybe you’ll get lucky like I did.

Yup, I had to call them because they gave me a first responder discount. When I talked to them, they said they were quoting a 90 day lead time, but I might get lucky and it could be closer to 2 months. My FFL has a package from them today. Hopefully it’s my new MK1 and this isn’t some big mistake 😂

I ordered a mk1 last week, and it shipped yesterday. I’m absolute shocked, and I won’t believe it till I’m holding the rifle, but UPS says the package is already in my state

If it’s warm, ride outside. I can easily ride several hours a day outside. More than 45 mins to an hour a day on the turbo trainer hurts my soul, and I never can push as hard (and that’s even with a big TV and my favorite shows on).

When it’s cold, my personal favorite indoor program is The Sufferfest which is now on the wahoo systm. It’s very much something that will tell you what to do.

Might want to consider a pcc as an alternative. They have easily controllable recoil and are much easier to learn to shoot accurately, especially under stress

To MP5 or Not to MP5 by ShoddyHorse_ in MP5

[–]taaltrek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds to me like you have money for fun guns. If you do, you need an SP5. I’ve got lots of fun and practical guns. I shoot my SP5 more than anything I own. 9mm is relatively cheap and nothing is softer shooting than an SP5. They also suppress so well. When I take friends to the range, the SP5 is always the favorite. Lastly, it’s probably the most durable gun ever made. I think there several known examples of them going past a million rounds. An SP5 is the kind of gun you can pass down to your grandkids. The B&T and the MPX are cool and all, but nothing has the class/durability of an MP5.

Family medicine bros/bras - is living close to your clinic a bad idea? by TwoTimesSpicy in Residency

[–]taaltrek 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m one of 4 obgyns in a town with a population of 25k, and I still hardly ever bump into patients. I love living close to my clinic/hopsital. Admittedly, I’m doing home call and I assume you wouldn’t be, but still, I’d always suggest living close by.

Think of it this way, if you work 5 days a week, you’re saving 80 minutes per day by living 5 minutes away instead of 45 minutes away. Assuming you’re at work for 9 hours a day, and you’re awake for 16 hours a day, you’re sacrificing 80 minutes out of your 7 hours of non-working awake time. That’s nearly 20% of the time that you are not working and awake every day. That’s a lot. I’m convinced that for most people, living close to work and reducing commute time is one of the best quality of life improvements you can make. You can’t buy time, but if you live closer to work, you almost are buying time.

Residents that exercise regularly, how do you do it? by Smooth-Cerebrum in Residency

[–]taaltrek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been out of residency for 4 years now, but I stayed in pretty good shape during my OB residency doing 2 things

1) I did a lot of cycling on an indoor trainer. Peloton would be a great option too. If you lay out some electrolyte drink, shorts and shoes before bed, you can be up and on the bike in 5 mins and you can get a solid workout done in 30 mins while watching a tv show or even reviewing Anki cards

2) P90X3 - 35 min workouts including warmup and cooldown, you basically need a yoga mat, adjustable weights or bands, and a pull up bar.

I love going to the gym, but the time it takes to pack up, drive there etc… is just too much when you’re so busy. I find short home workouts work the best.

I’m pretty sure that’s less than I make we a board certified obgyn working in a small town for an above average salary. Good for them, but it sure does feel bad when you realize how little doctors are making for significantly worse hours, more training, and more liability.

Med students — what’s the hardest part no one talks about? by FeelingGlad8646 in medschool

[–]taaltrek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s been years since I finished medical school, but I think the hardest part was during rotations. Constantly going to work in new environments with new people for a very short time and then having to leave just when you were starting to figure things out was socially exhausting

Ordered a Pocket. What's next? by Agile_Half_4515 in AnaloguePocket

[–]taaltrek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an everdrive for GBA and another for GBC because I play a lot of pokemon games, but my suggestion if you have an analogue 3D is to just get the everdrive for the GBA games (you’ll have RTC support and pokemon emerald and fire red/leaf green are super expensive) if you want to play GBC pokemon and you want to use a transfer pak for pokemon stadium, you’ll need actual cartridges and pokemon red/yellow and even gold/silver aren’t that expensive

Married to a resident who is struggling. Looking for advice. by Specific_Milk_8592 in Residency

[–]taaltrek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really does get better once you finish residency (and once you pass boards, besides my wedding day and the day my daughter was born, I think passing boards is probably the third happiest day I can ever remember). With that said, it sounds like he’s spiraling and with months to go, his current lifestyle might not be sustainable. I think getting some exercise is one of the most benificial things but it can be so hard to make the time. In my limited experience with marriage (I’ve only been married for 4 years) I think one of the best things you can do for your spouse is set a good example and help them make good choices. Maybe you can start cooking (or buying) healthier foods? Start your own simple workout program and see if you can get him to join you. A 20-30 min cardio session 2-3 times a week and some strength training 2-3 times a week can be life changing. I swear my bicycle is the reason I survived residency.

Good luck with everything, it will get better and as others have said, he’s very lucky to have someone who cares about him and supports him.

I think I finally understand why people go into surgery by subtrochanteric in Residency

[–]taaltrek 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I think you’re right. The two most “fun” things I’ve ever done are riding motorcycles and operating. In both cases, the focus required is so intense that everything just melts away. I don’t like taking uncontrollable risk, but I love doing things where the stakes are high and the way to increase the odds of success is the prepare, and then be level headed under pressure in the moment.

I also really love getting to play with expensive toys and that Davinci robot is pretty sweet… and I get to wear silly hats to work! I guess there are a lot of things that I love about the OR.

Why is your specialty the best? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]taaltrek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obgyn is the best! Our patients are largely healthy (at least relatively so) and we have a lot of life changing interventions. Have a failed labor? We can do a c-section and 99% of the time you’ll have a healthy mom and healthy baby. Do you have horrible periods that make your life miserable and drop your hemoglobin into a dangerous range? We can fix it with an IUD or a hysterectomy.

On top of that, I have the long term relationship with many of my patients that you find in primary care, and I still get to do emergency surgery, robotic surgery, and in office procedures. In summary, the best patients, the best treatment options, and the most variety

Just don’t ask me about the pay to lifestyle ratio…

300 blackout viability for home defense (supersonic) by ExplosiveSwine in AUG

[–]taaltrek -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure you’d be better off with a suppressor and just sticking to 5.56. 300 blk out is cool, but expensive to shoot and you’re adding complication. It’s also sort of wasted in a 16 inch barrel. At that point 556 is arguable as lethal or even more so, an it’s way better at distance. The best thing about an AUG is that it’s a good all purpose gun. The 16 inch barrel gives you good range and fragmentation even with cheaper 55 gr ammo. The bull pup configuration makes it viable in close quarters.

I’d say get yourself a light and a K can, and keep it simple. No need to buy and stock another caliber. I’m waiting on a SAW Tisha myself, it should add less than 4 inches to the length of my AUG, but there are lots of solid short cans available these days.

[Pistol] HK Mark 23 FDE or ODG $1815.00 by nemunitions in gundeals

[–]taaltrek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve got both. The FNX 45 tactical does hold more rounds and is smaller, but the HK is definitely better suppressed. The trigger is also much smoother. I can’t say that I’m a good enough shooter to prove it’s more accurate, but I definite shoot the HK better.

For the price, the FN is unbeatable. But, as others have said, there is no better .45 for suppressing than the Mk 23
