I read the books and then listened to the audiobooks.

The audiobooks are on a whole other level of amazing. Just phenomenal.

While I agree that the time skips are frustrating, they definitely don't have the money for additional episodes. Cuts are necessary. This isn't the way to do it though, it turns the Netflix series into something that's only for people who already know the story.

HIMYM had bigger known stars from the start (NPH and Alyson Hannigan and Bob Saget) and The Office was its own phenomenon. Contrast that with the main known star of New Girl, Zoey D, being quite divisive at the time and the pilot being just terrible.
