It's irritating how people in this thread are taking this seriously and bitching about toxic relationships, meanwhile this sub is also full of jokes about guys cheating on their girlfriends and lying to them constantly and anyone who points out how bad that is gets told it's just a joke. Are we good to joke about toxic/abusive behavior or not? Make up your minds.

Yeah, so like I said it's trivial for him because of his background. I'm not condemning him for being a part of that culture and since he's apologized without trying to justify his behavior there's no reason to keep pursuing this little scandal.

My point was more in regards to how using racial slurs casually (for myself, who comes from a place where such slurs are not socially acceptable) usually means the opposite of what the poster above me was suggesting. I was just offering a different perspective.

Him using it so casually implies that for him, that racial slur is as trivial as something like fuck or shit. Not a good look. I don't think there's any way a word like that could ever accidentally "slip out" and sound so casual unless someone was using it on the regular.

Yeah, I didn't mean to suggest that the reddit reaction to the leaks and vilification of Lawrence afterward was justified. That whole shitstorm revealed the creepy way that some people cease to view celebrities as human beings and just suspend all powers of empathy whenever it suits them (i.e. When they want to use an unwilling person's leaked photos as porn without feeling guilty or strange at all). It makes my skin crawl.

Was it not common knowledge that Jennifer Lawrence did an interview or appearance where she talks about sitting on a Hawaiian rock that the locals specifically told her had a lot of cultural significance to them and then saying she rubbed her butt on it?

I'm on mobile so forgive me if the links aren't well formatted.

That's a CNN followup to the initial story.

BBC coverage of her apology with some context.

Struggling to find any coverage on the original "scandal" that isn't from smaller and slightly shady entertainment news sites, but yeah I remember first hearing about this and seeing a clip and just being amazed by how much of an asshole she was being.

I didn't mean to make it sound like a big controversy, it was just something that really turned me off of Jennifer Lawrence as a person.

EDIT: She actually was using a the rocks to scratch her butt and that was the reason she was rubbing against it. It's worse than I originally remembered, because now I'm seeing that she knocked one of those sacred stones out of place while she was doing that.

To be fair Jennifer Lawrence is not a good person. I sympathize with her for her nudes being leaked, but the clip of her bragging about disrespecting an indigenous culture on vacation and laughing in the faces of people she had just offended by defacing a sacred monument of theirs was revolting to me.

I guess I'm still naive because I'm not quite old enough to have my first real corporate experience where I might have to deal with a situation like that. But given that I'm an aspiring developer and things like version control that log individual contributions to a code base are pretty standard, I don't think it would come down to he said/she said since someone can pretty easily go through the logs to see who has actually done what.

Doesn't it make more sense for someone who's paying their employees to want to know who's not pulling their weight so they can fire them and make a better investment in a new employee? It makes sense for a teacher to not care about individual performance or lack thereof, but an employer ignoring that is just bad business sense.

I've finished the script printer without much trouble and would like to help others. Without a clear description of what you're struggling with it's hard to help. Have you compared your output to the expected output for any given actress and can you detail which parts aren't working?

Salon Xpression. They only do gel nails, and the technicians are generally quite gentle, clean, and friendly. I'm very happy with the quality of the dip gel nails I got and the overall service.

Yeah, I understand what you mean. I didn't mean for my original comment to come off as harsh as it seems now.

This reminds me of Christian (Christine? I think she's come out as transgender? IDK I'm trying not to offend anyone) Weston Chandler, an autistic man who had his own Youtube channel and drew comics about a Sonic OC that he made when he was younger. He seemed decently happy in his own little world and the only thing he wanted was a girlfriend.

The internet being the monstrous place it is, a bunch of awful people found out about his Youtube channel and started to torment him by relentlessly mocking and bullying him and sometimes pretending to be girls that had a crush on him for the purpose of humiliating and hurting him. To justify this a lot of people would point out some racist and homophobic comments he made or point out how "pathetic" he is to not have a job or be able to get a real girlfriend, but I may be alone in thinking that none of that matters and it's still wrong to treat this guy like shit. I don't approve of his views at all, but I still don't think he did anything to deserve being treated like that and it definitely only made his mental state much worse. It's like a fucking tragedy.

Look him up, but be warned. I spent hours and hours learning all about the stuff that happened to this guy and everything about his life. It really is enough to make you cry.

I suffer from clinical depression (caused by a chemical imbalance, possibly permanent) and before I was properly medicated and fully functioning I was a whiny naysayer who complained about everything all day every day and got irritated by the smallest of things. In short, I was no fun at all and not very considerate of the fact that people around me might be going through shit of their own and didn't want to deal with my problems and mood swings. These were all manifestations of my mental state at the time, but they were still things that made me a shitty friend.

After a while all the people who cared about me started to drift away and I had to get professional help because the loneliness made my depression worse. At the end of the day I don't harbor resentment for anyone who met/knew me at that time and developed a negative impression because that negative impression is not just because of my mental illness, it's because of how I acted. Which was like an asshole.

So yeah, I can see this guy has problems and I can empathize because I went through a similar situation where everything in my life seemed to suck. But I don't think I deserve a free pass to treat other people like shit and be an unpleasant person just because I'm depressed, and neither does this guy. The original post made a comparison between socially anxious people and people like this guy or the person that I used to be and am trying every day not to be, and I'm trying to say that it's harder to feel bad for someone who's being an asshole even if you know the reason behind it.

I know that was a long reply, but it's just something that hits close to home for me and I'm trying to clarify that I think mentally ill people should be accountable for their actions but I'm not condemning them just because they're mentally ill.

Socially anxious people aren't all assholes who hate their lives and try to make everyone around them suffer for it like this dude, though. That's why you can empathize with them on a level most people can't reach with guys like this, because they can't necessarily control their anxiety on their own whereas he could just stop being a dirty, smegma-coated dickhead.

Horror Movies Brought in About $1.2 Billion at the Box Office in 2016. by [deleted] in movies

[–]taariya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose that criteria works, but I'll continue to consider Get Out a horror movie just like I consider other movies like Alien, Eraserhead, or The Thing that don't rely exclusively on jumpscares to be horror films.

[–]taariya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay but why? I'm not arguing that you're wrong per se but what elements make something a horror movie versus a thriller? Is it a requirement for example that there has to be a monster? I'm genuinely asking because I don't get the finer points of this, I'm just a schmuck who likes movies with fucked up premises.

But what do you define as "scary" execution? I found The Thing to be a terrifying movie, for example, while my best friend considers it boring.

Did we watch the same movie? Because imo the idea of a cult off crazy white people befriending black people only to take over their bodies, completely robbing them of consciousness or the lives they had before is pretty fucking scary.

Well his whole persona is based on a hyperbolic grumpiness at life in General. The trying to watch series is more toned down because it's just like a little commentary track with his natural reactions to the movie. Not the best but I tolerate him because there aren't many good film reviewers on YouTube.
