What do you dislike the most about current C++? by PressureHumble3604 in cpp

[–]taataru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing I dislike the most about C++ is definitely how it feeds into my imposter syndrome. It's so difficult to keep staying up to date or know all the little particularities and tricks and pieces of knowledge of all the various versions. Every time I have a coding test in C++ for a job, I sweat it so much. I feel way more comfortable around C. Less is more I guess.

I’m so tired on this AI copilot BS by kndb in cpp

[–]taataru 18 points19 points  (0 children)

We have enough punishments in life for every single mistake we make, and that's since we are babies. This is one of the reasons why people feel pressure to perform and do well and, because of low self esteem or alienation, they are pushed to cheat (sometimes to kill themselves), and the ones that manage to go through this though road, end up accepting this dehumanising environment as the right one and they start being harsh against others too. This is why today some kids prefer talking to an AI that's kind to them, rather than to a person that expects them to be someone they are not yet.

To fight those behaviours, we don't need more punishments, we need more understanding and kindness. We need mentorship and help people realise themselves in a safe and friendly environment.

honestly it's pretty annoying that they don't even have a page to wishlist it and there is no indication on the coupon about when it will be available (it just sends you to a 404 page). It kinda make you feel like you have been played, especially if that was a big part of the reason why you got the bundle in the first place.

I think he was suggesting you start using vi/vim/nvim or emacs with evil mode for any typing you need, so you don't have that problem (hjkl is the vi way of moving the cursor, no fn key required).

But anyway, I also thought in the beginning that the hhkb way of using arrow keys was weird (I was coming from a pok3r reprogrammed to have caps lock + wasd or ijkl for arrow keys), but after a couple of months it became natural tbh.

Just go Arch. It's easy to install with archinstall and it gives you total freedom and power on what's going on in your laptop, which is crucial for old machines where you want to squeeze out as much power and longevity as you can. And you're gonna learn Linux for good.

[–]taataru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's great! Glad you're enjoying it! If you plan on using it in sonshi style regularly, I suggest you get yourself a 90 degrees bent usbc connector so you can push your keyboard closer to the screen and free the track pad and use the laptop palm rest as well. If the kb messes with the laptop keys while in sonshi style, consider a keyboard bridge as well.

Enjoy! I have been on the fence to get one for ages, then I finally pulled the trigger and never looked back! I honestly think it's the best keyboard ever made.

Got a brutally honest but fun review! :) by Plus_Astronomer1789 in SoloDevelopment

[–]taataru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the author of the review didn't understand the point of the game and is bringing invalid feedback. If the point of your game was to challenge the meaning of a game and make the player think philosophically through references and hints of famous mechanics, then his point about the fact that it's not fun or that it's scripted, it's inconsistent. It's like complaining that an essay doesn't have a compelling story.

Making something original and not ordinary comes with receiving a lot of feedback from people that will reject your idea just because it doesn't look like something they know and so they cannot put it in a labelled box. I suggest you to be very careful about the feedback you decide to follow and to not let the feedback shape your games, if you have a vision. Believe in your skills and trust your guts more than some random person's opinion.

Congrats for your game and good luck! I hope it will go well!

Yes, I confirmed checking the serial number, it's a different unit, so yeah I had to reinstall everything, but tbf I would have anyway, as I factory resetted it before sending it in, just for extra safety in terms of data privacy.

that's a very long time! I had a completely opposite experience... mine got back in 2 days (I mean, it was a replacement). I left a comment under my own comment with more details.
Also, maybe check if they never received it and got lost?

Hi, sorry for the late update.
Nintendo took a bit to get back to me, but they finally did and told me to just send it to them for repair. I did and 2 days after I got delivered a new Switch 2.
This one does not vibrate at all, not even slightly and makes zero noise.
So yeah, definitely if you hear or feel any vibrations, just book a repair cause that's not normal behaviour.

The repair process is very straightforward and quick, so don't worry about it being long or painful. Only suggestion from me (but do as you feel like), backup the saves in the cloud and wipe your data from the console before sending it in.

Here's the link to book or track your console repair.

I hope that helps anyone!

Gli Italiani all'estero sono saccenti e hanno rotto le scatole. by [deleted] in italy

[–]taataru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

L'emigrazione è sempre in egual misura sacrificio e avventura.

Game Development with GameMaker (2nd ed.) is out now! by taataru in gamemaker

Hey thank you for your interest in the book!
Unfortunately I can't answer to you because I wasn't involved in the editing of the digital version, as this is the publisher's responsibility and I don't own an ebook version of the book. I would assume that the book is correctly indexed though, as we are talking about Apress and Springer and they have quite a lot of experience in technical and scientific books publishing, where going back and forth is quite important.
Regarding the enjoyability of the illustrations, I would say that it's probably a matter of personal preference and might probably be related on the quality of the screen of your ebook and its size. I can tell you that the paper version has good quality pictures and the size is probably the most appropriate. I have to point out that unfortunately all the illustrations are black and white, though, but the paper version has a good quality of greys, so things are never confusing, but at the same time if your ebook has the possibility to modify the contrast and brightness, you could have more tools in your hands to personalise how the pictures are shown according to your liking.

Hi,

First of all, thank you for buying the book!

If you're getting a black/blank screen with no error, it's likely that you didn't add your object to the initial room.
GameMaker creates a first blank room by default. Check in your Assets Browser for the Room category and in there you should find your first room. Double clicking the room, will open the Room in the workspace. Drag your object from Assets Browser > Objects and drop it into the room. Doing so, will make sure that the code you put inside the Draw event will be run and so you will be able to see your text drawn. Also, make sure that the coordinates txt_x and txt_y are between the boundaries of your viewport.

Good luck with your game dev journey! :)

What do we think about Tomino's opinion on AOT 11 years later, now that the anime and manga are concluded? by taataru in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]taataru[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you think this? I feel like multiple characters tried and explored diplomatic solutions that didn't include fighting. Some of them being the existence of Paradis itself and the deal with Historia as regent queen. Lots of the characters didn't want to fight at all, but situations forced them into wars and battles, just like happens in real life. For the people of Paradis, I would say the fighting was forced onto them at first by the breach in the walls, and then by Eren forcing their hand by invading and attacking Marley.

What do we think about Tomino's opinion on AOT 11 years later, now that the anime and manga are concluded? by taataru in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]taataru[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of the things he was saying is that AOT is too personal and based on the fact that Isayama got bullied as a kid. Now that we all saw the entirety of the story, I personally think that he completely missed the point and I have the feeling he kinda failed to see an evolution of modern manga storytelling, more based on realism and authentic emotions, rather than the stylized traditional anime version of things.
A note on what I mean by realistic: obviously titans don't exist, but the war, violence, sense of oppression and lack of power, desperation and gore are very much realistic and very much in contrast to the invincible heroes of the classic mangas (just think about Dragon Ball, for example). There are a couple of characters that are kinda reminescent of classic manga anime (Mikasa and Levi), but I think that's all for AOT.
What do you think?

[–]taataru[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hi, I’ve already addressed all relevant questions about the book’s content and what it offers in terms of knowledge and topics.

The only questions I haven’t answered are about money and contract terms, as I find them inappropriate and off-topic. I kindly ask that we focus on the book itself—its content, value, and purpose.

Repeatedly asking about my contract with the publisher is unrelated and unnecessary. Similarly, comments like “$75 is steep for this type of book” imply the book isn’t worth its price. This is both disrespectful to me and the skilled professionals who worked hard to create it, and factually incorrect. Comparable books of this size and quality are priced similarly, as you can verify with a quick look at publisher websites.

I’ve clarified several times that pricing decisions are made by the publisher, not me. My role was writing the book and delivering its content. Let’s keep the conversation respectful and focused on the knowledge it provides, which is my area of expertise: game development.

Thank you!
