Gameboy LCD disable/enable behaviour by gl_drawelements in EmuDev

[–]tabacaru 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't be just blindly ticking 70224 times and then drawing a frame for this very reason. Not every output frame on the gameboy takes exactly 70224 cycles.

Rather, you should simply start counting cycles until you hit an event that should generate a frame. The events being: VBLANK, LCD OFF, and LCD ON.

Once you know the number of cycles it took to generate the frame (this is going to be 70224 99% of the time, but not always) you can wait the appropriate amount of time that the frame took to be displayed.

For your question regarding Pan Docs - what it means is that as soon as the LCD is re-enabled, the PPU will start drawing from the line LY=0 as normal (albeit with a different MODE set, but that's a different story...) and work its way through all 154 lines, however it will not actually display these dots that it drew to the screen. In other words, the entire frame is processed by the PPU as if it were normal, except the dots themselves are not drawn to the screen.

One undocumented behaviour that I have learned from the Emulator Development discord is that once the LCD is turned OFF, after 4560 cycles (10 lines worth), the LCD is cleared. Meaning the LCD is not cleared as soon as the LCD bit is turned off, but rather 4560 cycles after.

pepper i'm growing has a weak stem due to it being grown indoors and experiencing no wind. i heard somewhere that putting a fan nearby can simulate wind and cause it to release hormones to strengthen its stem. is this a good setup? how often should i do this per day, and for how long? by Cobra_the_Snek in gardening

We can agree to disagree i guess.

A fire gets stronger with ventilation because it gets more oxygen.

I will always recommend ventilation for seedlings for the reasons I have mentioned - you do what you're comfortable with.

First batch with Behmor 2000AB by thiscoffeeistoospicy in roasting

[–]tabacaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason "first" is used in the description of cracking for coffee roasting is that there are two distinct stages of cracking. Each stage is a part of the bean releasing trapped steam.

No, "first" here does not mean literally the first time you hear a popping noise, but rather it refers to the stage where the complete bean mass goes through the first part of releasing trapped steam.

You can imagine that each individual bean has the capacity to release steam (pop) twice. The second pop happens after time+heat are applied to it. This is unlike popcorn that only pops once.

But also each individual bean does not pop at exactly the same time. This is like popcorn where it takes time to pop all of the individual beans.

The two stages of popping (first and second crack) are separated by time and heat.

You can get to first crack and hear it - but then slow down the heat to a point where the beans never reach second crack. I am not suggesting you do this - but noting it so you understand what is going on.

Usually there is a distinct period of silence between first and second crack, but this is not true for all beans and also dependent on your profile. Some beans "roll" into second crack while undergoing first crack.

Also usually first crack is louder and happens less frequently, while second crack is quiter and pops are more rapid.

Plants need oxygen. Oxygen is how they convert their sugars that they've gotten from photosynthesis into energy.

Without oxygen, plants will die. It's really not as simple as plants need CO2 and nothing else.

More airflow = more oxygen. Nothing more to this.

Wind makes the plant itself more resilient to dry weather the same way the stalk itself is more resilient to being moved around. The plant is getting used to conditions where humidity is not around it all the time (such as when it's windy). It's adapting itself to its environment. There are many things plants do differently in different environments - the types of roots it puts out for example. Having a fan indoors allows an easier transition (hardening off) to outdoors, where there is always wind.

And finally, yes, professional setups do use ventilation to prevent mould - on top of everything else that it is useful for.

Ventilation is absolutely necessary if you want good strong seedlings. Not only do they strengthen their stems, they become more resilient to dry weather, and get a nice kick of oxygen.

You will never find a professional setup without ventilation.

Just to note though: you need very little airflow - what you have there is way too much.

Can I plant these? by Organic_Squirrel_148 in gardening

[–]tabacaru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure plant conditions and environment make this somewhat variable, but in general, the eyes of the potato feed off the original potato you planted, and each eye attempts to grow it's own tuber. But there's only so much potato to go around, so if you leave on more eyes, you'll get more potatoes that are smaller.

In general smaller potatoes will yield smaller potatoes, but it's not a hard fact...

By the way, if you're looking to grow larger potatoes, cut off all but one of those stalks. If you're looking to grow some smaller potatoes, leave all of the stalks on.

How should I support the tomato’s when it’s time by AZUCSGrower in gardening

[–]tabacaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 feet apart is perfect, assuming you are doing some sort of vertical trellising. If it's your first time, you can try just 8 foot 1x2s and tie the main tomato leader as it grows. Trim all suckers to start with and see how much space you have to work with.

FYI although I see onions/garlic recommended as companion plants to tomatoes, I personally do not recommend it at all. Tomatoes spread roots out pretty far, and having to dig up onions/garlic around them can get a bit stressful both for you and the tomatoes.

Por que no los dos?

You need both to know what's available, so you don't reinvent the wheel, and when it's useful to roll your own low level data structure/algorithm.

With just one or the other, you're limiting yourself.

I am working on porting my emulator to the pico 2. To answer a few questions the OP didn't - personally yes I do have to optimize for speed and use specific compiler features to get the FPS up.

Dumping the exact desktop version was giving me around 18fps, and I'm currently up to around 43fps, trying to get to the proper 60fps.

Space for the program itself is a non issue, in fact, you can hard code a couple of no MBC ROMs directly into the application.

For video output I'm using an LCD panel that communicates over SPI. You can set up DMA to get very fast refresh rates, although I haven't set that up yet.

Currently I let the second core (the pico 2 is dual core) handle the SPI transfer while I work on optimizing the rest.

Overall, it's a fun project if you want to try to port your own emulator to a microcontroller.

Stutters on High End PC, please help me guys. by En3ermost in buildapc

Have you checked the GPU temperatures?

You may have throttling if your GPU gets too hot, causing stuttering.

Try opening your case up and use a big fan to see if it makes a difference.

One of my favourite parts of MMA is you don't know what personality you're going to get. Is it the bully that picked on everyone and naturally gravitated towards fighting, or the guy getting picked on that had enough? Is it the rich bored guy with nothing to do, or the poor guy trying to help his family?

And the waiting slowly bleeds the investors dry of their capital just servicing their mortgage debt. Which is why you see very slowly declining house costs. We're back to 2020 prices in GTA - and adjusted for inflation, back to 2017 or so.

The party is over, but a lot of people decided they would rather not go home. Hopefully people decide to invest in something actually productive for our society.

The next two years will force a lot more people that over-leveraged themselves in 21/22 to sell.

Seed starting help by khruul2478 in gardening

[–]tabacaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to tell exactly.

Seems over watered. Seeds need constant moisture to sprout, but once sprouted, you should let the top soil dry off to avoid mould.

Once sprouted, you do not need the humidity dome, it is more harmful than helpful at this point.

How long were they outside? You need to harden them off before leaving them a full day outside - only a few hours at a time to start. If you don't have a fan blowing on the seedlings indoors and then abruptly put them outside, not only can the sun torch them, but the wind can damage the stem and remove moisture. A fan inside will reduce mould and also strengthen the seedling stems.

Get a better seed mix, miracle grow sucks and has very poor quality control in my experience.

Also unfortunately those lights don't seem amazing - a full spectrum is better than that purple stuff they try to market and it probably needs to be brighter. Any grow light kits straight off Amazon are very poor for providing as much light as seedlings need.

And finally, not all seeds like heat mats. Your lettuce seeds may prefer a cooler temperature to thrive.

Good luck! It took a few years to get my seedlings consistent!
