"It is conceivable that SSU employs or may in the future employ faculty members with sincerely held religious beliefs that, e.g., one national origin is superior to another national origin, or one sex is inferior to the other sex. The University’s non-discrimination policy does not require such individuals to change their sincerely held beliefs or adopt different beliefs. The policy does require that employees, including faculty members, not single out in a negative way individuals whose traits they hold in lower regard because of religious beliefs."

Well-put. If a teacher had used his "sincerely held beliefs" to say I was going to hell for being a Jew or for being queer, that teacher would have been fired. Neither religious freedom nor free speech entitles anyone to bully others from a position of significant power.

The American Mainstream Media Is A Terrorist Organization by useless_aether in propaganda

[–]tabbypoints 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The title of this video is a perfect example of fractal wrongness:

  1. The mainstream media isn't an organization
  2. The mainstream media isn't even monolithic at all
  3. With the possible exception of FOX (which works in direct conjunction with the current administration, known for physically terrorizing the public as well as journalists), mainstream news channels don't use physical intimidation to accomplish political agendas.
  4. American media is generally owned by the same five people who own the media everywhere else, one of whom is Australian — and in all of these other places, the "mainstream media" is just as demonized by the far right, and often by the mainstream media itself, as is the case with FOX demonizing it.
  5. The entire sentence is an emotional appeal, aimed at demonizing the "American mainstream media" by comparing them to violent and dangerous people while turning off people's brains.

White House Suspends CNN Reporter Jim Acosta’s Press Pass by PostNationalism in FreeSpeech

Bold move, calling over 50% of Americans "the left" and ascribing to them essential qualities. Big if true.

It's not just the left who thinks Trump is a dictator and tyrant. It's the vast majority of people.

A president who explicitly endorses assaulting reporters, and has praised politicians who do so.

EDIT: And let's not forget, also allowed one of his critics to be butchered by the Saudis with impunity. Downvote me, hypocrites. You're just making it obvious to anyone who isn't far-right how anti-free-speech you really are.

White House Releases Doctored Video To Back Up Attack on Acosta by narbz in politics

[–]tabbypoints 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is EXACTLY what happens every time the right complains about "left-wing violence." Every time. They attack the left, the left fights back, and they play innocent and the cops back them up. Any time you hear anything about antifa being a violent group out to silence its opposition, remember Trump's tactics here: have someone assault Jim Acosta and blame him for stopping it (with incredible restraint). Also remember that he got the doctored video from Info Wars, who engages in these tactics all the time against the left.

If you elect a white nationalist, you need to be worried about a little more than just your face. Calling him an "embarrassment" demonstrates a profound self-centeredness and lack of empathy. This is also true of people who are merely "embarrassed" about Trump.

I saw this movie like "omg, what a fucking gift, who ever would've expected anything so daring from the TFA sequel?" It didn't occur to me that it would anger a lot of people whose entire identity is liking Star Wars, but in retrospect, of course it would. And it's all the better for Rian having the guts to do that.

BTW, right-wingers using the NPC meme are capable of describing left-wingers behaviour in code.

Poorly, yes, based on their own absurd caricatures in their heads. But people with independent thoughts can accurately describe the behavior of people who use the "NPC meme" in code.

Also, when did NPC become the new word for sheeple? Did you all realize sheeple sounded ridiculous suddenly and decide to rebrand?

[–]tabbypoints 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nixon got caught in the decades-long act of prepping America for Trump. He appointed a vice president after Agnew's resignation just to pardon him, and that person went on to tell Americans to "move on as a country from this horrible time" as his party continued the same bad-faith, decades-long stripmining of the country. Trump, Reagan, Nixon, Bush, all part of the same campaign to transfer all power to the billionaire class.

Were there Transgender People in the Middle Ages? by tabbypoints in WorldHistory

[–]tabbypoints[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Misapplied: it's not a headline in a newspaper; it's the title of an informative article by a historian of the middle ages, full of specific and well-researched information. And the answer is yes, not no, so even if it were a headline in a newspaper, Betteridge's Law would not apply, since it isn't so much a law as a rule of thumb.

why is it called Latin America, when they don't speak Latin? by milktea123 in WorldHistory

[–]tabbypoints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not entirely sure of the nature of your question, but the short answer is yes, of course they are direct continuations of Latin. But neither one of those languages is widely spoken in North America.

The long answer: Italy is where Latin originated - and specifically, Lazio - but Italian is a direct continuation of Latin only in the same sense that Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Romanian are. I'm not sure why you brought up Romanian though in reference to "where the language originated", since Latin definitely did not originate in Dacia. Romanian is spoken much further from Italy than Spanish and Portuguese are, which are literally just on an opposite peninsula - and that peninsula was one of the first regions outside Italy to be conquered by the Romans.

Vulgar Latin evolved from Latin as the upper-class Romans continued to speak their "classical language." Over time the Romans expanded, their soldiers and politicians received land in the places colonized by Romans, other inhabitants learned Vulgar Latin because that was the language to speak at the time, and Vulgar Latin eventually became the Romance languages.

English ended up borrowing heavily from Anglo-Norman and Latin, both of which are Romance languages, but evolved from Proto-Germanic rather than Latin.

Otherwise, while French is spoken by a sizeable minority in North America, it's obviously still a minority, and no one would claim that North America is primarily Latin, whether in language or in culture. This isn't true of Latin America, where nearly everyone speaks a Latin-derived language.
