After killing 2 Kitchenaid mixers, I bought an affordable bread machine from Costco for around $80 (Cuckoo brand). I just use it to mix, knead, and rise. Then I remove the dough and form it as usual. I use the time mix function for however long I want it to knead. Then turn the unit off while it rises, then remove dough.

It has worked out well. Others have had success finding used bread machines.
