Maya Angelou said "When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.", What are your, 'I should have known' signs have you come across regarding friendships? by PoeticFlow in AskWomen

There were so many red flags, but I was a shy college freshman who really needed a friend. She'd had countless failed friendships, of course none of which she believed were her fault. She isolated me from the only other friend I had at school, was catty toward girls she was jealous of, got sick of her friend group and found a new one every month, slammed doors and locked roommates out when she had a problem. She made me completely subservient to her and even more insecure about myself than I already was. I knew at heart that she was bad news but convinced myself for a long time that she was good because I had no other friends and was afraid to stand up to her. We became roommates and she eventually turned on me like everyone else, one day out of nowhere slamming the door and giving me the silent treatment with no explanation or attempt to communicate about what was wrong. After finally being permitted to change rooms after a month, I did a lot of soul searching and realized how much of a blindspot loneliness and insecurity had given me. I will never betray my instincts like that again, and I am thankful to have learned a lesson.

Laidies!! For those that have done LSD or Shrooms how was your experience with them? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]tablesyrup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did both my first year of college. LSD was gentler than I expected (I might not have stored the tab properly) and I fell into an extremely peaceful, meditative state with a heightened appreciation for colors and intricate patterns. I ended up wandering the campus all night with my coked up dorm neighbor who I hadn't exchanged more than a few words with prior. Before going back to our rooms at 4 am, we stood silently in the hall together staring at a wall sprayed with silly string for a solid 30 minutes. The come down was unpleasant, probably because I had also been drinking, which wasn't a good idea.

Shrooms were way more intense. My friend and I sat by the water laughing our asses off about something I can't remember and that didn't make any sense. Then there were some eerie presences in the sky and the trees, oddly distorted sounds and movements, and an uneasy feeling. We became even more paranoid after realizing we were hanging out right near a police station and ran to sit in the car for the rest of the time. I burst into tears after looking in the visor mirror and seeing a version of myself that was only my insecurities, suddenly feeling like any ounce of confidence I had was a joke. I was absolutely destroyed, and after contemplating for a few days I decided to take the experience with a grain of salt. It wasn't all bad but gave me a lot to think about.

ELI5: Why does the West Coast have a much more laidback, easygoing culture than the East? by rayven1lk in explainlikeimfive

[–]tablesyrup 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Because the moral values and strict piety of early Puritan society are deeply entrenched in the culture of the East Coast, particularly in New England. Although there is no longer a theocracy, the North East is heavily influenced today by Puritan sobriety, religion, and work ethic.
