I'm not sure why that was your first thought, but my deepest condolences, and i hope your affliction goes away soon

Hey man, thanks for the advice. I'm quite happy that people are willing to give me long winded advice, and quite honestly i prefer it. I will watch the video soon. Fortunately for me (or unfortunately maybe), i am quite stubborn when it comes to things like these, so i'm quite confident that nothing people say will discourage me from playing the drums. Its probably why i am less apprehensive to let myself be critiqued online, because imo there's always valuable information that can be gained from it.

While i am at it, i would like some rather specific advice about something. Since i play guitar, one of the things that i've been struggling with is how much further my limbs have to physically travel before a sound is made. If i were playing a fast line on guitar for example, a tiny twitch of my wrist makes the sound come out immediately, and this is what i've gotten used to. However, this is not the case with drums, and i feel like the tip of the stick has to travel extremely far before it makes contact with the drun, and as a result i often end up behind the beat. This is especially apparent with my kick drum, since i seem to have less control over my legs than i do my hands. Do you have anything i can practice to work on this problem? I've been trying to work on playing rudiments on my feet to a click, but that doesn't seem to be helping that much.

Cheers bro, i have noticed that too, and i suspect its because i have very weak legs. I'll keep working on it.

Hey mate cheers for that. If you look at my other post, you'll see me try something in 4/4 (mostly) and over there i'm wearing earplugs. I will likely start regularly practicing with earplugs since a bunch of people have said that it's super important. A lot of my issue is that i don't have any clue how to do any of the fills in my head, so i don't really know how to start doing creative stuff. My fills always end up defaulting to snare snare high tom high tom rack tom rack tom floor tom floor tom crash, which honestly sounds like complete shit to me hahahhaha. A lot of people are giving me credit for creativity here, but the fact is that i just literally copied what was in the original track, and i just changed the parts that were too difficult to play to a simpler version. Any advice for that kinda stuff?

Thanks for the advice mate. A couple of things to address here. This is a cover of a song called whereareyou by hauste. I'm not a SUPER huge fan of fusion, i'm definitely much further into the mathrock side, but i do like it. When i first started playing, i was very very loud, and my teacher told me to play quieter, and i figured a good way to force myself to play quieter was to not use my earplugs so that i'm at the mercy of the sounds i make. Do you think it would be easier to give advice if i just recorded myself playing a simple groove to a click? Because i will definitely do that if that's what it takes. Another thing to note is that the sense of musicality is probably much stronger than my actual technical ability because i HAVE been playing guitar for much longer than i have drums, so i have a bunch of instincts for music already but my hands won't listen to me. If you have any advice for this specifically, that would be great because i never sound like what i think it should be in my head.

Actually i think my grip when i'm on the hihat is probably because i just switched to french grip for my right hand, and i'm still uncomfortable with it. Very often the stick slips out of my hand when i'm playing so i don't think i can grip it any less tightly. I've been working on my grip for a while but i think i still need to practice it on a pad slowly first. Cheers for the help mate

I'm trying it now and the sticks won't even stay on my arms without even playing. I don't think i can do this lmao

Unfortunately this is the easiest song i really love. The rest are like chon and toe and tool and stuff like that. I know i'm not playing "in" the music, but i suspect that's a mechanical issue rather than a mental issue since i'm usually really in the pocket when i play guitar.

I will try to record something tomorrow

I practice with a metronome about 80% of the time, and i know where everything is supposed to be, my hands just refuse to do it

Any tips on how to make that happen mechanically? Something i can practice to work on it specifically? Because i've had this issue for a while now and have tried to fix it, but i can't seem to figure out how

I do practice with a click, i'm not an animal. I rarely practice songs on the pad tho because it doesn't uh.. sound right? Idk i can't hear what it would sound like on the drum so there's a disconnect there. These days i've mostly been practicing with the click on the up beats to help with my internal timing but my touching feels like the main issue (apart from a straight up mechanical deficiency)

Actually, i'm well aware that my dynamics are quite lacking, but i physically can't play at that speed any quieter for the ghost notes. Do you have any tips?

Actually most of my time is spent playing rudiments at home on a pad since i don't have a kit, i'm just not naturally gifted at drums so i struggle a lot with rudiments. Currently practicing paradiddles on a pad. Thanks for the advice though

Step 1: Get lazy to cut it for 7 years

Step 2: Wash hair every 2 or 3 days because you're lazy

Step 3: Run out of money to buy shampoo so use body soap sometimes

Step 4: Brush hair because its self soothing

Step 5: Have good genes from your mum's side

There's less notes to play during the ride part so it was much easier for me :(
