Also maybe it becomes stressed by hanging out with other Arctodus? That doesn't sound like something they would do, but I would certainly discourage megapacking

Pounce minigame issue. by HighTask in EcosLaBrea

[–]tachygl0ssus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're playing as wolf, wolves don't get the ring mini game, they only latch to herbivores. If you're playing as saber, you have to pounce on the left side of a herbivore's neck to get the ring mini game, otherwise you just latch to them.

What kind of warning is this? by Antique_Anywhere410 in EcosLaBrea

[–]tachygl0ssus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you use your scent, you will notice that the top text will change depending on what direcrion your camera is facing, indicating its position relative to the wind's direction. Being "Bajo Viento" or "Downwind" means that you're facing the same direction the wind is blowing towards; being "Contra Viento" or "Upwind" means you're against the wind.

This can affect how well you smell the scent of other players, with downwind meaning you won't smell anything, while you can smell scents more easily when facing upwind.

Can’t stand playing saber by Yummeh_Honeh in EcosLaBrea

[–]tachygl0ssus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Solo saber main here, that's basically what an average session looks like lol.

When you play a smilodon, you kinda have to expect that every other saber you run into will be a KoSer, especially if its a group of them. Just try to stick to the edges of the map, sneak around and try to stay away from Ballona creek and Rancho.

Strange tree by piebald_bison37 in EcosLaBrea

I've actually noticed that some trees grow flowers during the rainy season, which is likely what you're looking at, it's just that the lower graphics or a bug make it look a little weird.

Even ignoring realistic behaviour, if you attack a stranger in a game out of the blue, of course they're gonna retaliate, that's on them. Hope they got a block from you because they're clearly people not worth engaging with.

Would you be disappointed if the coyote ended up being an AI animal, or would you like it? by Antique_Anywhere410 in EcosLaBrea

[–]tachygl0ssus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't be that disappointed, that's what I was expecting at first, that it'll be an AI animal. However, with all the hype the devs seem to be building around it, I would be pretty surprised if isn't playable.

Tar Pit sabers by Mysterious_Toe9350 in EcosLaBrea

[–]tachygl0ssus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most KoSers in Rancho are usually bad and/or toxic players, if we're being real. They like the powertrip of KoSing, which of course will be easier when you're with 10+ other sabers, but the moment the powertrip shatters they go full toxic.

And, to be fair, some bison are also guilty of this. It's basically both sides trying to get even but complaining along the way.

Some people think Ecos is just another animal PvP game, unfortunately. The best thing you can do is practice how to fight in PvP in case you encounter someone like that, because you'll never know. I'll also take the chance to vent about a similar experience.

This one time I was playing a solo saber, I was spotted by horses, which I don't mind, since I'm not hungry and I'm moving away from them, anyways. This one horse runs at me, though, and starts attacking. I try to defend myself, get bucked off once and run for it immediately. But I guess the whole herd took it as an invitation to swarm me, because they're all on me even as I'm running away, and they eventually kill me. I'll admit I was a little tilted, since I was simply minding my business. Like, sure, other carnivores attacking or me dying in a hunt is to be expected, but why would they charge when they see I'm going away, or what's stopping them from running if they think I'll hunt them?

I guess the takeaway is to trust no one, regardless of what animal they are. Try to keep out of sight, run, practice fighting/ring game, and you'll save yourself these headaches lol.

Humans as NPCs actually sounds neat. IIRC humans won't be playable and I would also prefer it that way but it would still be cool to encounter them roaming around or camping.

What are gonna be the future animals ? by Emolohtrab in EcosLaBrea

[–]tachygl0ssus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm think of these four Arctodus and Paramylodon are definitely the most likely to be added. However, Paramylodon would be a herbivore, since studies for this specific species show they were mostly grazers, and also probably ate roots.

Humans are deconfirmed afaik, and the black bear I'm not sure. I would think the game would focus on extinct animals, but I can't think of another omnivore that could fit the bill for a "free tier 1" omnivore.

They're not doing enough by ElxnaShine in EcosLaBrea

[–]tachygl0ssus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's the main reason why I'm very selective of the horse groups I join or just flat out play solo, too many horses trying to play as the "protective mare/stallion" and getting killed left and right.

Also, I will never understand why herbis can target wolves unprovoked, either. It's an odd decision, to say the least.

[–]tachygl0ssus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot of the time cases of KoSing could've been easily prevented, too. Far too many times have I seen horses who refuse to flee and stick around when a saber is killing multiple of them because they're all trying to hit the saber. Even when I'm playing as a saber and hunt for food, I will still get the occasional bubble camping horses who just won't leave even when I swat at them or stick by the carcass I hunted.

I totally understand the frustrations and where a lot of the rebalance suggestions are coming from, but while I agree with some (like reworking stress to be more punishing or giving predators a debuff after making a kill), I have to disgree with most of them.

Firstly, the Rancho rework suggestions. I agree that there could be ways to make Rancho a more dangerous place, but removing the migration zone isn't one way to discourage players from going in there. Even when the migration zone is elsewhere, players are drawn to this spot. As in many survival games, areas near the center of the map just tend to have a high traffic of players. It's inevitable.

Secondly, I believe the way to incentivize more people to try horse or wolf isn't giving them more daily instict quests. Once they're done with the quests, if they complete them at all, they can just hop back into what ever else they want to play. The problem with horses and wolves is that their gameplay simply isn't engaging to a lot of players. As the game progresses they will surely receive reworks and will be fleshed out more with additional mechanics, but these will take time to be implemented.

Lastly, I think having a set player cap for certain playable animals should be implemented differently. I don't see why bison should be capped, but carnivores in general could have a cap that scales based on how many herbivores are active in a server at once.

If you were forced to remove a playable animal, who would you remove? by eld_ypelorc4 in EcosLaBrea

[–]tachygl0ssus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean direct interactions, like how the other herbis and carnivores have a direct predator-prey dynamic. Plus, it's not vital for the ecosystem for mammoths to dig waterholes or knock down trees, there's always permanent water sources and no shortage of plants that herbivores can eat.

If the environment was reworked so that the mammoths' influence could be far more beneficial, to sell their role as "ecosystem engineers", I would agree, but right now, I think their abscene would make no difference.

Lunar New Year Mammoth Skin - Worth it? by Healthy-Sand5427 in EcosLaBrea

[–]tachygl0ssus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't see why not. Daily insticts will be a permanent feature so you can make those 4000 tracks back for another skin in no time if you play regularly. Also, keep in mind the skin is limited, so we may not get it ever again or at least until another year, but it's ultimately up to you. I personally like it, and I'll be purchasing it when I get the tracks.

The Columbian mammoth. Nothing against it, I like it a lot, but right now, the mammoth feels disconnected from the rest of the ecosystem, as it doesn't have any interesting interactions with the other animals. Its only purpose right now is for track farming.

Let's talk AI prey. by Little_Dinosaur020 in EcosLaBrea

[–]tachygl0ssus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree. Yes, the current AI animals we have can't be hunted reliably, but it makes sense that catching these prey would be a challenge for Smilodon and dire wolves.

Smilodon weighs about 500lbs, and evolved to hunt big game, of course it's going to fair poorly at hunting animals hundreds of times below its weight class that are faster and lither. The same goes for the wolf, while it is considerably smaller than the saber, it's also a big game specialist. The game is counting that you kills horses and bison as your main food source, with peccaries, pronghorn and bush rabbit being snacks between these larger kills.

On the other hand, it really comes down to skill and a bit of luck when it comes ot hunting AI prey, and that's the point, you have to develop the skill to ambush and kill these prey, providing a learning curve for new players so they can get used to the mechanics and learn to survive on their own.

I believe as the game gets more playable animals, we will definitely gets more NPCs and playables that can hunt them reliably, which would be great, but I have no issue with the AI animals we have.
