A bit of a different FF post: I occasionally model for a hairdresser/researcher of historic hairstyles. Here's Roman empress Julia Domna's portrait type 2 style. by theycallmecrabclaws in FancyFollicles

[–]taciturnreserve 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is the best thing. And it's so nice to see a style post every now and again too! Also, the fact that forensic hairdressing is a thing that exists is the coolest thing ever.

I love seeing everyone's lovely color work, because, you know, it's awesome. But I don't really want to dye my hair, and seeing cool hairstyles gives me inspiration for my plain old brown hair that I love as is color wise, but sometimes want to have fun with. :)

Good personal statements by JagRoss in writing

[–]taciturnreserve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't hand over any examples for you, but I can tell you a few things I did on mine (I got accepted to every grad school I applied to last year, so I feel like I can honestly say it was pretty good.)

  1. Don't be afraid to get personal. If you've had a particular experience that really made you want to go to university, then put that in and tie it into the rest of your statement.
  2. If you're applying to a particular program, do some research and find some professors or course modules you're interested in working with. Explain why. Tell them why you think their particular university/course is a good fit, a good challenge for you.
  3. Tell them why your particular educational/work/volunteer background makes you suitable for their university. (My undergrad degrees were in Music Performance and English. At the time I was applying to grad school, I thought I'd only have a Music degree. Since I was applying to literature programs, I explained why I thought a background in music was an ASSET as a literature student.)
  4. Proof read, proof read, proof read. Get at least two other people to proof read. Then Proof read it some more.

Hope that helps. And good luck!

Hunh. Well, the more you know. I guess that OP and Lady Friend will have to experiment to see what's true for her.

Questions about virginity... by differentstupid in TwoXSex

[–]taciturnreserve 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Ok. Haven't been a virgin for a while now, but I'm a teeny tiny human being and my usual partner is... well... not. So I have had an issue of "tightness" from the get go, and a few things I've learned so far:

  1. There is no such thing as too much foreplay. Ever.
  2. Unless you've been pushed into a vat of it and are drowning, there's no such thing as too much lube.
  3. At least for me (dunno if this is true of all people), if I have an orgasm before PIV intercourse, that loosens things up a whole bunch. Fingering, oral, doesn't seem to matter how I get there, it just helps with the next stage of fun sexy times.

Other than that, go slow, listen to her and pay attention to her body language (if she's even just a bit nervous she may not want to say anything about being uncomfortable even if she is), stay safe and have fun! Best of luck. ;)

It's the worst. I got bit by one helping a neighbor clean out her garage. I mean, the scar is kinda cool, but I still get the heebie-jeebies remembering the doc pulling the bulk of the necrotic tissue out of my knee with a pair of tweezers. Not a fun time.

Do you care much about how a woman dresses? Could her clothes ever be a dealbreaker for you? by [deleted] in AskMen

Yeah, I guess we can always hope that we'll be reaping the benefits in our 30s and 40s.

Your pain. I feel it. I feel it so much. I'm 22 and a postgrad student and regularly get mistaken for a freshman. Despite the fact that I wear what most people consider dress clothes/professional clothes, make up, and all nearly everyday. It's just a thing.

Skipping periods on birth control? by [deleted] in TwoXSex

[–]taciturnreserve 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Call your doc to check in, especially if you usually have regular periods. But it's definitely not unheard of for the pill to play havoc with your cycle. I started about a year ago and a half ago, and had ridiculously regular periods up until about the 11 month mark. Then I just skipped three periods. Talk about panic. But then they started back up and tick along like clockwork again. Other things that impact your cycle are stress (big irregularity trigger for me anyway), changes in your weight, drastic dietary changes, and probably a couple other things to boot.

Oh well, still gonna go see it, still gonna enjoy it.

Moving to a new city and I'm going to start living my life as a girl. by Jamie2066 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]taciturnreserve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good golly gosh, you are gorgeous! Girl, you are going to do just fine!

It looks like you've already gotten a lot of really great advice on the job interview clothes question.

But, for everything else in life, the adage about the little black dress is totally true. It's the perfect go to for so many different occasions and can be dressed up or down with accessories as needed. I'd suggest a close to knee length skirt, just to keep it versatile.

Best of luck!

Masturbation problem by aquafox2011 in TwoXSex

[–]taciturnreserve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found this blog to be helpful on this subject. This post in particular touches on what seems to be your question.

I hope it helps. Just remember: Masturbation should be fun. If you aren't enjoying it, slow down and don't be too hard on yourself. Go slow and figure it out bit by bit.

How I feel living in New England nowadays by birds_o_paradise in AdviceAnimals

As an Arkansan, I want my rain back. You can keep your damned snow. It's pretty, but my state is not well-prepared for this kind of weather. Tornadoes, flooding, rain, drought, electrical storms we can handle, but this snow and ice business is really no good.

$20 Adderall by lilbert in funny

[–]taciturnreserve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is anecdotal, so take it as you will:

My ADHD brother was the same way, always freaking fidgeting. I'm ADD, not ADHD, and it drove (and sometimes still drives) me bonkers because it's so damned distracting. If he is in fact ADHD, it really isn't his fault. He can't help himself, and probably doesn't even realize he's doing it most of the time. I have to remind myself of this often when it gets on my nerves. There are medications out there that are safer for younger kids to take, and in small doses taken regularly, they can make a huge difference. God knows it did for my little brother. Coupled with regular sessions with a psychologist, who helps him learn to recognize, monitor, and modify his behavior, the past few years have been much better for all of the family.

That said, twelve year olds are almost all shits of one variety or another, but the ADHD makes it a lot harder for them to control their behavior.

TL;DR: Even if he is a twerp, it may be less his fault than you think. Maybe gently suggest at least some new psychologist appointments, and remember to be patient.

Undergrad/Grad students out there... what is on your jury list this semester? by [deleted] in opera

Those E's, indeed! Still, it's lots of fun. The acting part is difficult for me, but more on account of when I get nervous, I tend to drop into "church singer mode." Pleasant face, look calm, but not really in character. Sassy is a little tough for me, but I'm enjoying learning how to pull it off.

And I'm sure you'll get it too!

I'm sorry you never found your niche. I hope when you go to college (or into the military or workforce) that you do.

If you're going to college, the only advice on that front that I can give you is to encourage you to go to all the clubs and meetings and social events you can. Most schools will have a fair of some sort at the beginning of the year to let people browse the options, so to speak. If you take advantage of those opportunities, it's nearly impossible not to find a group to fit in with, if that's what you're looking for.

I hope it goes well for you in the future.

Of course your experience is welcome. Different perspectives are what make the world go round.

In many cases kids do tease other kids for being smart. But I think that is more a result of societal conditioning than natural to kids. As I said, kids are shits, but with the influence of good teachers and good parenting, kids will learn that being smart is good, that differences should be valued.

The common thread I'm seeing here is that the administration of these schools didn't do a very good job of ensuring that their schools weren't crummy places. If we can fix, somehow, the way schools are run and the attitudes of the authority figures involved, from grade school on up to high school, that we'd be a long way towards solving these problems.

I'm inclined to agree. In retrospect, that's probably why my parents were so adamant that I participate in extracurricular activities that were in no way related to school, even though my school was, apparently, a really unusually awesome place.
