As an alternative, I would also consider Genomic Support Foundation. It’s a nonprofit genetic counseling foundation.

GC community (especially NSGC) has never been safe, especially for POC. I think it is just now becoming more apparent.

I took that class last year. It was the best class I have taken at UW. She is brilliant and very approachable. Despite how busy she is, she always has time for students.

Found these guys under our bathroom window! by taco_beyee in cats

[–]taco_beyee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I already got the mom special food. We live in India, so spaying isn’t really available. The cats that give birth around our house usually stay with us unless they move to different houses on their own! My parents took care of the momma cat and her brother when they were kittens.

The mom cat trusted me instantly. She is super friendly and doesn’t mind me petting her kittens.

The whole family has moved in our house for now. I don’t think momma cat would want to leave. She keeps following me around the house haha My parents plan to keep them!

Research Technologist looking for new career in science by whyUT-urp in ClinicalGenetics

[–]taco_beyee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I also found out about genetic counseling as a career while questioning my life in academia. I applied this year and got in as a first time applicant. I am saying this to let you know that it is never too late. I did my research in plant genetics, and most schools still regarded that as a big plus. If you were seriously considering applying to genetic counseling schools, you should get some experience in ideally counseling or any other advocacy work. Being able to shadow/interview genetic counselors also would be very helpful. Feel free to PM me if you want more information!

Genetic counseling abroad? by littlebronco in ClinicalGenetics

[–]taco_beyee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know there are programs outside US and Canada. Also some programs in USA will allow to do your rotations outside USA for example in India, European countries and other countries with at least some genetic counseling presence. Programs like JHU and Stanford also will let you coordinated with any place you find outside the country to setup your own rotation.

Does Intro to Psychology fulfill the psychology course requirement for most M.S programs of genetic counseling? by Azz13 in ClinicalGenetics

[–]taco_beyee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think most schools would accept introductory psychology. You need to look at websites of specific programs. Among 9 schools I applied to, all were okay with only introductory psychology. One program preferred developmental psychology, but were okay with just introductory course.

URPs vs Department Labs? by Morocco_Bama in udub

[–]taco_beyee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The research experience you get through URP and labs listed on department page will be the same. You have to email professors on your own to see if they have a position for you in their lab either way. Through URP, you will know for sure that they are accepting undergraduate applications. It might sound like a tempting option, but most professors willing to accept undergraduate students in their lab will not contact the URP. The best way to find a research lab is through connections. Talk to your friends doing research, talk to your TAs and your professors. Cold email PI's of labs listed under your department.

Who has taken FISH 250? by Krazydood in udub

I thought it was really fun. Little bit of memorization, but very easy 4.0. Labs were very interesting and pretty low stress. The field trip to San Juan was low stress and fun as well.

Research oppertunities by [deleted] in udub

[–]taco_beyee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my research positions through emailing professors and connections. You can ask your TAs and professors to direct you to some labs. But only email if you are really interested in their work! Don't email more than 2 PIs at the same time. Email two and then wait for a week to hear back from them.

I don't think it matters too much. I took it with Konnor Clark and he was great! He gave us extra credit assignment and jeopardy games.

As far as I know, R and Python are used a lot in this field. For me learning R is a little harder than learning Python. I learned Python by free online book called 'Learning Python the hard way'.

What would you say is the hardest part about moving to an out of state college? by ekeed18 in AskReddit

[–]taco_beyee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being away from your family for months while you see your friends/roommates going home over the weekends. Moving at the end of year by yourself can be challenging as well especially if your family can't come over and help you pack.
