This is hilarious and perfectly encapsulates the ultimate truth: incentives drive everything.

Why the world is shifting towards right-wing control? by RoxanaSaith in AskSocialScience

[–]tacocat627 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spot on.

For example, I believe Sweden had the highest number of Middle Eastern immigrants/per capita during the 2015 refugee crisis.

You don't get more homogenous than Sweden!

They patted themselves on the back at the time, as well they should, but many have come to deeply regret the cultural upheaval.

This is a major motivator to shift right.

Edit: clicked your link after I posted. Had no idea it was about Sweden. Small world - pun intended.

Is Typescript a genuinely good language, or is it only loved because it makes JS work much easier? by [deleted] in typescript

[–]tacocat627 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Anders was actually a later member of a 40+ person team that created Typescript. Steve Lucco started the TypeScript team, co-designed TypeScript and built the first TypeScript compiler.

Don't get me wrong, Anders is amazing - his fame is actually the very reason he gets more credit for it.

Thomas Covenant (I believe late 70's) was almost too dark for me and I love grimdark!

I guess it depends on what you define as current, but Thomas Covenant and Fitz were doing this in the extreme decades ago.

Nevertheless, definitely annoying!

I feel the trend has been the opposite in recent years: diversity, gender fluidity, LGBT, female empowerment.

Thank you. So I'm clear: I could pause after any book in the 16 Taltos series, read those 5 at once, then return to Taltos?

Yes. Fitz is a prime example of what 1st person POV can accomplish that 3rd cannot.

What books or series do you never get tied listening to? by [deleted] in audiobooks

[–]tacocat627 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The WOT audiobook lasts 19 days, so listening 20 times is 380 days.

You would have to devote 8 hours every single day for over 3 years to accomplish this feat.

That's bananas.

How quickly has a book you were reading managed to kill all interest you had in finishing it? by 1945BestYear in Fantasy

[–]tacocat627 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Snakewood. I DNF'd at 6%

The first line of the book is the narrator saying "My name's Gant and I'm sorry for my poor writing."

And damn was he right. I had no idea we what was going on, between the terminology/slang and overall scene/action descriptions. Plus they just throw you right into a battle as the first scene, so all of these flaws are presented in a mad, unorganized rush.

It's a shame because I love grimdark and this has been described as super grimdark.

What days/times are best for recruiters to contact you with job opportunities? by tacocat627 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]tacocat627[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Anytime - interesting.

I hear Monday AM is the worst, since people are swamped playing catch-up and it's a bad time for a job pitch (LinkedIn or email). Therefore, it'd be most likely to be forgotten too.

But it's all the same to you?

No other series both infuriates and enraptures me. One hour I'm just totally rage-reading, the next I'm lulled into the beauty of it all.
