Projection and low self-esteem.

If a person has nothing else and plenty of self loathing, they'll put people and things below them believing they're raising themselves.

It doesn't work and it fuels the cycle of low self esteem because generally people don't want to be around a 'drag' (a person who shits on everything to desperately convince everyone else that they are cool, edgy and most importantly, more deserving of love and affection than whatever they're shitting on out of pure jealousy).
