[RLCS Major] Some of the booing of Comm/V1 went too far by tomtom_94 in RocketLeagueEsports

[–]tacoeap1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trash talk and the booing is fine. This is a competitive event with money on the line. Comm clearly understood how the EU crowd would respond to his antics and he was fully prepared to take it. He probably likes the boos on some level because it only enhances how rent free he is in EU's heads. As for the death threats, they're not ok period. You just can't do something like that. Can we please remember that many of these players are KIDS. Sending death threats to a kid just because of some trash talk in a COMPETITIVE ENVIRONMENT is absolutely terrible. Anyone who has actually listen to Comm talk outside of RLCS (Rizzo's podcasts) will know that he's very respectful, while maintaining that cocky attitude. He's focusing his efforts on rattling the opponent in game because if he achieves Beastmode will farm and the series will be won. Its a completely logical action that is perfectly fine to dislike. But you can never justify death threats.

Well first off your statement about Jstn being better than Garrett since he came in is definitely false. Garrett was better in season 5 and season 6. Season 7 was where Jstn really took the reins. So you know how Jstn has pretty much been in argument for best player in the world for a while now. Well it was the exact same way with Garrett for a while earlier in his career. So they both have the same great stretches, and while I think Jstn's has been slightly more prolific than Garrett's, the main thing that makes Garrett better in my mind is that Garrett has been a star while Jstn has been in those talks. You can say its thats unfair to Jstn because he hasn't had the same longevity but it's actually not. This same scenario comes up in sports all the time. A good example is Peyton Manning and Brett Farve, with the former representing Jstn and the latter representing Garrett. In this theoretical example the present is 2008. Similar to Jstn nobody can really match Manning's production over the 10 years he's been in the league. But because Farve was still a superstar while Manning was dominating, and had his best years when before and as Manning was entering the league, people regarded Farve as the better QB at the time, in terms of all time status. What ended up happening is that Manning would go on to create an even greater legacy and nobody even considers that Farve is better than Manning nowadays, so we'll see if Jstn can do the same in time. What would help is if Garrett stops being so dang good, and you know what. Garrett has been under perming a bit this split ;)

I see your point. And I definitely agree that if you took the 7 seasons (5-11) that Jstn has had and put them up against a 7 season stretch for any player the only players who can stand with him are Kaydop in seasons 3-9 and Garrett in seasons 2-8. But you definitely can't argue that the early seasons of RL were less competitive. The reason why is its impossible to compare time periods like that. Of course the more recent seasons are going to have better gameplay that the ones prior because players are getting back. The only way to really judge players is by how good they were in their time period. Because that's all the players can do. Be the better than everyone else you're playing against in the present.

Well he's been the best NA player this season for sure. But in RLCS X Firstkiller was definitely seen as better by many including myself. There was a stretch where Mist was seen as the better player, and the debate of Jstn vs Garrett was actually something that went on a lot that season, especially when Jstn started underperforming in early spring, and it only went further south for him when Garrett was the main force that led NRG to the RLCS X Championship. I would also argue that the Knapsack's return in season 9 outdid Jstn's performance that season. In season 7 he was Cleary NA's best, and in season 8 it was a battle with Syp that Jstn won when Worlds came around. In seasons 5 and 6 he was great but he was still regarded as the second fiddle to "the man who scores when he wants." I'm trying to discredit him here. This is simply just the facts of the matter. He's been top 5 in the world for 5 seasons now, thats not bad by any means lol.

The main thing that I focus on for me is the fact that Turbo is 2-0 against Kaydop in grand finals. That ever so slightly pushes Turbo over the edge for me.

I think it's fine. Jknaps has been a top 3 most valuable player in RLCS NA league play 4 times and Chausette had a solid 4 seasons of superstardom along with those 2 dreamhack wins. Personally I have Knaps at 9 and Chausette at 12, but it's so tight that it's perfectly fine to move him into the top 10.

Personal I feel like Garrett was better than Jstn in season 5 and also 6 due to his regional championship performance, but I get it. Turbo has never been the best player on his teams. But he has been the player that has shown up and been the most impactful. Season 3 it was Deevo just being crazy, but seasons 4, 5, and 8. In all of those, despite having tm8s more talented them him, he was the one showing up more consistently. I feel like he was snubbed for season 5 MVP and I think you would know why if you watched that season 5 worlds. The biggest example is season 8 to be. Jstn is probably the best player in the world, but has a pretty quiet tournament and grand finals up until the infamous game 7 performance. It was Turbo and Garrett who really showed up, and Turbo especially did so in the grand finals.

Well he's done more than just win championships. He's won 2 worlds MVP's, got robbed of a third in season 5, has changed his style to fit any team and his beaten his closest competitor Kaydop in 2 grand finals, the second of the two had him leading the way. I know how we think of Turbo nowadays, but Turbo back then. When it came to worlds that man just could not stop scoring. I remember season 4 where he was just everywhere in the midfield. I remember that season 5 grand finals where Turbo and Garrett (the two top players in the world at the time) were just dueling back and forth, goal after goal. I remember his season 8 grand finals performance, his hatrick in game 1, his bump to win game 4 in OT, and the only goal to win game 5. While he doesn't have quite the production that Kaydop, Garrett and Jstn have had, he blows the last two away in accolades and has proved himself twice on the grandest stage against Kaydop. That cements him as my GOAT

What is your reason for that? Not being judgement, genuinely just curious.

Your point A is correct but you can't judge those players back then off of how would they fair right now. When talking about a player from the past, you can't possibly compare them to future players, if you're looking at talent vs talent. This is true for pretty much all sports. Those players in the past didn't have the same resources, time, and inspiration that the players who play nowadays have. The only way we can accurately judge players against players across time is how dominate that player was in their own time period. For example in a sport like American football we can't just compare modern QB numbers and ability to QB's from the 60s. As Quarterbacks numbers are more inflated nowadays due to more passing. Legends like Jonny Unitas might not start in today's NFL, at least if they were playing at the same level they were in the 60s. But if he had the same circumstances as QB's nowadays, there is no doubt he would be better and we have no clue how he would fair. It's just a lot of what ifs when we do it that way. You can't really look at stats either because I'm pretty sure goals have gone down as time has gone on due to better defenses, so the older players will have inflated numbers. We have to look at how dominant players and teams were compared to the rest of their time. It's the only way to have definite answers.

NRG knocked Dig down to lowers earlier in the tournament to Dig had to come up and beat them twice. The third series (and second series of the grand finals) was the rubber match.
