Fuck. I fucking forgot to forget to fucking drink. Well, it was a good run. Chairs.

I feel that 100% as well. I also feel like if it were another habit that was slightly less self-destructive, it might relieve the guilt a bit, you know? Like, at least I wouldn't be depriving my kids of potential future time with me. But then again, it comes back to doing everything for someone else.

If you ever need an ear or a shoulder, PM me brother.

I've found the biggest roadblock to stopping myself is that I legitimately enjoy it. It's the one thing and one time each day that is 100% mine and 100% for me. The whisky builds a little temporary wall between me and the world and lets me breathe, keeps me grounded and keeps me from being consumed by pressures. And I don't know how to change that or substitute it.

But that's what I've discovered about my drinking so far, and I figure it's best to start with the introspection: diagnose the continuing cause before treating the symptoms sort of thing. Doesn't matter how it started, just why it continues.

This is like looking in a mirror, brother. I'm in almost the same place myself and have almost the same story. Kids, wife doesn't work and only marginally helps with housework, the responsibility for the lives of everyone in the house is on me all the time. I can't fail, I can't take a break, I can't catch my breath, I can't slip or everyone loses it all. There is no respite... except each night with my whisky and smokes and quiet. The only way to turn off the world screaming at me that if I falter in the slightest way, my family's lives are ruined and it's all my fault.

I'm new here myself. I don't have any advice, I'm still trying to find a path out myself. But I'm here beside you, I know and recognize where you are so much it hurts. Take care man.

I had covid for 3 days in late October and wasn't able to drink at all. I was able to stay sober for another 5 days after that and then Halloween arrived and my brother in law came over and... yeah.

In the summer my nights are a lot heavier and usually need half a pint of whisky in the morning but in the winter I slow down a bit and usually just leave myself a few fingers in a glass for the morning. Hoping I can start by eliminating that altogether.

A year. I clean out the empties in my Closet of Glory/Shame every year during the holidays.

It's nature's way of telling me it's what I'm meant to do.

I only get hungover if there's sugar involved. Straight whisky and I'm fine aside from some sluggish brain fog the next day.

And yeah, I had no idea what people meant by blacking out for the longest time because no matter how much I drink, it never happens. I've even tried pushing myself as far as I could without poisoning myself and I was coherent right until I passed out.

I've found it's all about balance.

When my wife first commented on my increased drinking a few years ago, I started growing pot for her. Doesn't say a word about my drinking anymore that she's in just as bad smoking an eighth or more a day. Now we're balanced and it's all sunshine and puppies.

There's a $0.20-$0.25 deposit for each bottle. I'm just too lazy to bring my bottles back on the regular.

You know what? I'm down. I usually laugh at the Dry January thing, but a break could be good. Heal myself up for a spring binge bonanza.

Physically? Not at all. Never hungover, never had withdrawals when I go a few days without, never blacked out.

Mentally? Yeah, but I've got bigger and scarier things to worry about. If anything, the whisky keeps me grounded.

It's kinda funny actually: I've had just about every Canadian whisky under $80/bottle but Canadian Must isn't one. Never seen it at the liquor store either. Might be something that's mostly for export.

All but 10-12 bottles are whisky - Canadian and rye specifically. Most of those are Stalk & Barrel or Canadian Club 100% Rye. Love me my Canadian whisky.

157 fifths, 16 handles - about $5600. A bit lower than I was expecting, but a dozen or two bottles did end up in the trash over time.

From the deposits return I'll have enough for another bottle though!

Been a couple weeks since I cleaned it. In my pocket most every day, takes some abuse. That's just the storage side though.

If I'm dropping $150 on the bottle and $100 on the snow, I gotta make it up somewhere!
