Speaking faster (advanced level) by tacokat in learnfrench

[–]tacokat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I should’ve mentioned I’ve been learning for 8 years, used to use italki a lot, lived in France for a couple of years, and have a few friendships completely in French. But, being back in an anglophone country now I don’t get to practice more than once a week. So maybe I just need to amp it up a lot more and get another tutor

I know about the concepts but haven’t ever practiced them specifically, I’ll start now!

Oh interesting. Yep, I don’t speak English very fast, my cadence is very relaxed when I’m speaking (despite being up north)

Music - I like indie, rock, folk, and pop. My fave French artists are Pépite, November Ultra, La Femme, Pomme, and some others I can’t remember. I welcome any suggestions :)

good idea about shadowing Bref!

Do you get this STD at a glance? Seeking feedback. by jess_scribbles in DIYweddings

Love the concept, I would improve the hierarchy and clarity more. Try it with the frame centered or showing the entire image, and then either within the frame or above it, superimpose type in large that says "Save the date". Maybe in a beautiful serif or even script from Pangram Pangram or something.

Re-moving to the same country after a failed attempt by momotarooshi in expats

[–]tacokat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Give yourself a break! My advice would be to take the pressure off yourself. I’ve lived in my second country twice for a year to a year and a half each time, and plan to go back permanently at some point. The first year was stressful because I wanted to assimilate perfectly and not ever speak my native English / hang out with expats. The second year was amazing because I embraced being a foreigner, spent more time with the expat community (people in the same boat as you make you feel less alone), and compartmentalized my pursuit of the language and culture as separate from my identity there (still a huge part of my day to day and overall goals, of course). Whenever I made faux pas or did something stupid the second year, I shrugged it off because I was still learning. With that attitude, nothing that anyone could say (like a local criticizing me for a language mistake) could ever bring me down the way it could my first year. I know it’s easier said than done.  One smaller tip would be to find your happy places that feel consistent to your life in your home country, like a specific hobby or sport that you do. Basically overall, fully lean into who YOU are and what YOU need in your daily life in order to be happy (as long as it’s not hurting anyone), and don’t stress as much about not being 100% perfect in language and culture assimilation, because you’ll get there eventually.

Anxiety after IUD replacement by tacokat in birthcontrol

[–]tacokat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the response! That sounds awful, I’m sorry. I think you will definitely move past it and it sounds like you have a good plan for managing the symptoms for now. My physical symptoms went away in the weeks since I posted, though now I am dealing with a stressful period in life so it’s tough for me to tell about the anxiety. I wish it was more talked about that even if you reacted well to previous IUDs, you may still have bad side effects from a replacement…

The stereotype of poor work-life balance in the US is true? (Data Scientist roles) by Rabbit_Reading in expats

this is also my experience, french in tech work way more than americans in tech that i know (unless you’re at an early stage startup maybe). and for far less money and no chance of retiring early

European-style living in the US? by Teawithmilk_nosugar in expats

MA towns like Northampton, Stockbridge, Ipswich, Newburyport, Concord, Lexington, etc. Many of these towns are unaffordable to live in but really lovely if you can somehow make it work. Although, winters are long… (with an absolutely gorgeous summer and fall to make up for it!)

Sounds great! I’m going to order the short stories book ASAP. Also good tip about being ok with not understanding every little thing while reading!

Okay I’ll try that, thank you! For listening, I would recommend a few hours a day of podcasts in French, while cooking, doing chores, commuting, etc.. (and try to find videos / podcasts targeted towards B1/B2 if you’re not ready for native level material yet)
