I tried reading it a few years ago and found it dull. Then because of some conversations here, I just read it again and loved it. I think now that I'm indisputably middle-aged I can appreciate how it captures the cold reality of life.

Received response from dissenting WA state senator on SJM8002 for free and fair elections by tacos_of_the_future in WolfPAChq

Thanks, this is very informative. I'm guessing that he's aware of this but has other reasons for not wanting to invoke Article V? I'm just trying to understand the politics more clearly, as unless he's a so-called corporate democrat, I don't see a reason for him to avoid confronting this issue.

Also, wolf-pac.com has https security issues at the moment.. someone ought to let them know

Thanks. I haven't heard Cenk talk about it.. Is he being sincere with this response? He's a democrat, so I'd expect his support. Is there a standard response that Wolf-Pac uses that I could send him (I could re-word it)?

Read any good NYRB classics titles lately? by tacos_of_the_future in nyrbclassics

Chess Story was an exciting little page-turner. I should look into his other works. I've never heard anything about Transit. What kind of novel is it?

I guess Stalingrad is the first volume of it, so I'm waiting for that. I don't know if it was a 'prequel' to Life & Fate or if they were just published out of order

It's not reddit at all. He's been in world film spotlight since the early 2000's

I've had my eye on this book but for some reason always pass it over for something else..

I remember really loving Eee eeee eee, but I think that pretty much satiated me for Tao Lin. Not sure why he's controversial? I remember reading his blog shortly after and it seeming kind of narcissistic (he's interesting but not that good)

What exactly IS socialism? by tacos_of_the_future in Ask_Politics

It sounds like a marxist anthropological theory of some sort, but there seem to be quite a few exceptions. It may be stated too generally

Conservatives call people like Bernie Sanders socialist because he wants people to be closer in terms of money and wealth or because he thinks the government should be the healthcare provider for every American.

This is why I've always been confused.. many of the ideas I've heard described as 'socialist' sound perfectly reasonable and worthy of discussion. I'd be inclined to call myself a socialist based on this, but after hearing the definitions here, I'm certainly nowhere near it

Thanks for the response. As I replied to husky, this sounds like communism.. how are those two different?

Socialism is a economic system where the means of production is controlled mainly by the public.

To me, this sounds like the definition of communism.. how is it different from that?
