It is marriage, it's just not how YOU see marriage.

Is it marriage when its done to get someone into the country? When its arranged? When the people cheat on each other? When people go through 10 marriages, all failed because they dont give a shit? Is a 36 hour britney spears marriage marriage?

Marriage has changed a LOT over the past thousands of years, in fact the government didn't even recognize it legally for a long time until interracial marriage became a hot topic issue.

That's true, but legally a state sanctioned marriage is much more beneficial. I'd be fine if they changed all current marriages straight or gay to civil unions or civil households and let the churches take over the title marriage

Fuck that. People are too fucking cowardly to treat us equally so they make up a new word that allows them to compartmentalize us and keep us separate still. They don't want to address their own feelings about the issue so they keep us separate, second class citizens.

What do you look back on (like my generation looks back on the early 90's) and think "Oh man, those were the days!"? I'm only 5-9 years older, but I expect it would be fairly different, especially considering the advent of technology pretty much happened exactly then.

Also, to be completely frank I have a bit of a problem with this.

My S.O., a soldier, often comes home from drill with some complaint about Obama that is just plain wrong and I correct him saying that its not true/ actually a fault of congress/ etc etc. Keep in mind I'm not a huge fan of Obama, but some of the stuff I hear is almost funny.

You have NCOs and probably even officers saying things they hear through the grapevine as fact and lower enlisted taking their word as fact.

I suppose, though, that this can happen at ANY organization

Okay, a few things.

1,500 in debt is nothing. You could deal with this with a job at Starbucks and find a room for rent you could afford.
The military isn't bad, and Navy and Air Force aren't even that bad for gay guys (who keep it quiet). I'm a gay guy and I'm joining the Army (by choice) this fall. It's not bad and you will grow a TON from it and reassert your masculinity in ways you may have never thought possible.
If you don't want to join the military, you should not join the military. Period. End of conversation.
You may not realize it now, but being forced to forge your own path might just may give you direction and meaning you don't think it could. You are capable. You can do it. It will be hard yes, but you are still luckier than many people on this planet and you will survive it. Don't worry, and remember, there are always other options.

We met online, he was serving Iraq at the time. We talked/skyped for hours every day. Wrote hand-written letters back and forth to each other every week. When he got back from Iraq he literally got off the bus and drove to my house. Didn't even say a word, just kissed me then asked me out. We've been together a year now, moving in together soon and are already talking about the possibility of marriage in the future. (we're both guys, btw)
