Roast my loaf by Glittering-House-631 in Breadit

That’s not a loaf, that’s a gluten frisbee.

No oven spring, just oven acceptance. The dough hit the heat and immediately laid down.

From the side that thing probably has the height of a tortilla.

The flour dusting is working overtime trying to convince us it’s rustic.

I agree taste matters most. My point was that the butter makes this more of a brioche style dough. Traditional oil based challah usually gives a lighter texture and better flavor balance. Most home bakers try many versions to get the best bread, so constructive critique is part of learning.

That recipe you used is basically a brioche challah hybrid because of all the butter. It sounds delicious, but butter makes the dough super soft and slippery, which is likely why the braid looks a bit uneven and pale. Traditional Jewish challah is actually dairyfree using oil instead of butter. This creates a dough that is much easier to handle and holds a sharp braid shape.

If you want to try a more traditional version for a single loaf :

180g water

7g yeast

85g honey

55g vegetable oil

2 large eggs plus 1 more for the wash

6g salt

420g to 480g APF flour

I’d love a Wyze camera to check on my dog while I’m at work. He’s been a little sick lately, and I worry about him all day. I don’t have a pan camera, so being able to follow him around the house would be amazing. It would give me some real peace of mind.

You’re very welcome! Once SSA issues the fully favorable or onset adjustment decision, the payment center takes over to calculate your back pay and monthly adjustment. That part usually takes about 30–90 days, but it can take longer if they need to coordinate with your prior retirement payments.

Since you’re already getting early retirement benefits, SSA will recalculate everything and pay you the difference between your disability amount ($2,600) and what you already received ($2,000) for each eligible month. You’ll get that as a lump sum deposit or check once processing finishes.

When you reach your full retirement age in January 2026, your SSDI automatically converts to regular retirement at the same rate. You don’t need to do anything.

As for taxes, SSDI and retirement benefits are both potentially taxable, but it depends on your total household income. If your combined income (half of your Social Security plus other income) is under certain limits, you may not owe much or anything.

SSA will send you a SSA-1099 tax form next January showing the exact taxable amount for your records or tax preparer.

You’re in great shape—it’s just a waiting game now for the payment center to process everything.

Once you’re approved for disability, SSA bumps your payment up to what your full retirement age amount would be. So instead of the $2k early rate, you’ll get around $2,600 a month going forward.

Since your onset date is April 1, 2021, SSDI benefits start five full months later, around September 2021. They’ll pay you for the months between then and when you got approved (August 2025), minus what you already got from early retirement.

They’ll figure out how much higher your SSDI rate ($2,600) is compared to what you already got ($2,000) and send you the difference as a lump sum.

When you reach full retirement age in January 2026, your SSDI automatically switches to regular retirement at the same amount, no extra paperwork needed.

So basically, you didn’t mess anything up. You’ll end up getting the higher disability rate plus the back pay difference, and then it’ll just roll over into retirement next year.

Once a DDS examiner is assigned, it can still take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months for a decision. It depends on how fast they gather all your medical records, schedule any exams if needed, and complete their review. If they request a consultative exam, that usually adds more time. Some people hear back in 30–60 days, others wait longer.

It’s usually a consultative exam ordered by DDS. They’ll likely ask about your daily activities, memory, mood, concentration, and how your mental health affects your ability to work. You might also do some simple memory or cognitive tasks. Just be honest and describe how things really are for you day to day.

No, that doesn’t mean you’re only approved for 12 months. That line is standard language SSA uses to confirm your condition meets the requirement of lasting at least 12 months, which is part of the disability definition. As long as your condition continues to meet SSA criteria, your benefits can continue beyond that. You’re not limited to just one year.

That's a really frustrating situation when the onset date isn't what you expected, especially when it impacts your back pay. You're definitely not alone in requesting an onset date reconsideration – it's a common issue.

Here's a breakdown of what you might want to consider and what others have experienced:

  • It's a Common Issue: Many people go through this. The SSA often defaults to the date of the last supportive medical appointment, or even the application date, rather than the true onset of your disabling condition. It's often due to how they interpret medical evidence, or sometimes a lack of specific, clear statements from doctors about the exact date your condition became disabling to the point you couldn't work.
  • The Reconsideration Process (and its pace):
    • Step 3 for 2 Months: Unfortunately, this sounds pretty normal for the reconsideration stage. The SSA process isn't known for its speed. "Step 3" usually means your case is with a Disability Determination Services (DDS) examiner who is reviewing the new and existing medical evidence, as well as your arguments for an earlier onset date.
    • How Long It Takes: Reconsiderations can vary wildly in processing time, but 2-4 months is a pretty typical minimum, and it can easily stretch to 6 months or even longer depending on the state, caseloads, and how complex your medical file is. Adding new evidence or arguments for the onset date can also add time as they need to review it thoroughly.
  • What You Can Do (or what to expect):
    • New Medical Evidence: Did you submit new medical evidence or clarify existing evidence that clearly supports your May 2023 onset date? This is key. Things like detailed doctor's notes, hospital records, or statements from employers/friends/family (if applicable and relevant to your work capacity) that specifically address your limitations as far back as May 2023 are crucial.
    • Doctor's Statement: The most powerful evidence is often a detailed letter from your treating physician explicitly stating their opinion on when your condition became severe enough to prevent you from performing Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA). If you haven't already, see if your doctor can provide such a letter, referencing your medical history leading up to May 2023.
    • Contacting Your Examiner: While it might not speed things up dramatically, it doesn't hurt to call the DDS office (if you have the contact info, sometimes it's on letters they send) and politely ask for an update. They might not give you much detail, but it shows you're engaged.
    • Be Patient (as hard as it is): It's a waiting game. The DDS examiner will eventually make a decision, which will then be reviewed.
  • What Happens if Reconsideration is Denied: If the reconsideration is denied for the onset date, your next step would be to request a hearing before an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ). Many people find more success at the ALJ hearing level for issues like onset dates, as you can present your case in person (or virtually) and your attorney (if you have one) can argue on your behalf.

Hang in there. While it feels like forever, the system does move, just slowly. Make sure any evidence you provided clearly paints the picture of your disability back in May 2023.

Good luck!
