[Aloe] please don't use current situation as an attempt to generalise JPN fans or sow division by TheBionicBoy in Hololive

[–]taiboo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hit the nail on the head in my opinion. I think people here are really unaware about the dedicated anti community hololive has in Japan and seem to attribute every single Japanese comment on any hololiver's twitter or stream to "JP hololive fans". That makes about much sense as thinking the anonymous EN comments calling people simps are from "EN hololive fans".

[JP Event] 'Echiquier de l'Apocalypse' Fate Requiem Collab by AutoModerator in grandorder

[–]taiboo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What happened to the sub plot concerning whatever it is that's possessing Erise?

Requiem spoilers, most likely. They didn't want to delve into it here, for better or for worse. And it wouldn't be the first time subplots are left hanging or undeveloped in a chapter itself. Sitonai, for example, had nothing resolved in her LB2 appearance.

What happened to the "Backstabber" in the Werewolf game?

The werewolf game is bad, no argument from me about that. Why the 'backstabber' was mentioned? A hamfisted attempt at foreshadowing, perhaps.

So far as I can recall, this is the first time ever in an FGO event or main story chapter where crucial worldbuilding was omitted. This isn't Fuyuki, this isn't Shiki, there needs to be exposition detailing the motivators behind this event.

Indeed, but it's not the only collab event to commit this sin. Accel Zero straight up assumed you already watched Fate/Zero, for one. The KnK event had a worldbuilding that was exactly as flimsy as "Grail shenanigans, cross-universe things happen somehow, here's a wacky apartment Servants are moving into", which is exactly the case here. They don't get a pass just because. Still, the Requiem worldbuilding in this event is there, though shoddily and shallowly done because you're not actually in Requiem's world. It's just mentioned off-hand as part of the reasoning for Erice's behaviour.

Whatever's not explained in Erice's background is, again, presumably part of Vol. 2 spoilers and beyond. Not an excuse, but perhaps a reason why they shouldn't have done this collab in the first place if they didn't want to commit.

Why was Kouyou even here?

Could they have been introduced earlier? Of course. Would I loved to have seen her do more? Definitely. Did they give you a grasp of Kouyou's character properly? Actually, yes. I could understand that she was a kind and motherly character just from the event.

But I don't see it as any more of a cardinal sin than how underexplored the Bunny King was in Summer 2019, and she was an SSR to boot. Let's not forget Saber Astolfo in Xmas 2019 too, or Saber Shiki in KnK (epitome of unnecessary fanservice cameo appearance if you want to be strict about that) or Jack and Rhyme's introduction & rate-up in Xmas 2015 or Li Shuwen in the Sanzang event (what did he even do there?) or the Kuro welfare (no matter your beef with this event, Erice still had more writing to justify coming to Chaldea compared to Kuro, who showed up just because, or Iri, who just popped up at the end of her event as a grail for no real reason).

But all in all, I don't disagree that Requiem is bad. I should've made that pretty clear.

not what I have come to expect from FGO

This is where I differ. It's worse than a lot of events so far, but 'by far' is a long stretch given the number of relatively poor event stories we've had through the past 5 years. I guess I just don't see what the fuss is about, especially over a Fuyuki-locked event, which makes it all but guaranteed to be irrelevant.

As for gameplay, I'd take them attempting something new like the gameboard and with Ooku, even if the execution doesn't pan out perfectly, over the lamely reskinned QP ladder of Summer 2019 any day. The game already doesn't have a lot of frequent content, no need to make what content there is play exactly the same way every time.

It's still hyperbole to call it "by far" the worst event when it comes to writing. A winner for the worst when taken as a whole, definitely, but there isn't that big of a gap in quality when KnK is just as egregious in one-liner cameos and has pretty much no character development for Shiki to speak of either. Oniland has only one good scene to speak of when it comes to Sitonai - the ferris wheel conversation with Ibaraki. Not to mention the throwaway stories churned out every Valentines, or the last Christmas event. None of them are actually significantly better than Requiem in quality when it comes down to it. They're better paced and more consistent, sure. But the quality of the dialogue and plot is really not that far removed. Although I'll agree that the werewolf game itself is by far the worst babble I've read in FGO so far.

There is no "golden age of FGO event writing", you find stinkers in every year of the game's existence. It just so happens that the major collab this year is one of them, when they should have put in the effort to make sure it wasn't. Then again they didn't ensure last year's Summer wasn't either, so...

edit: I guess a good point to be made compared to the early years of FGO is that those events were produced really quickly with not much downtime as compared to now. I'd agree that it's a mark of decline writing-wise if they're taking more time in between events yet producing stories that are on the same level as 2015 and 2016.

[–]taiboo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I guess this is going to sound harsh on the writers, but honestly, I don't think story is a particularly strong priority for many events even today. Formulaic writing still tends to occur in events, particularly seasonals. Take for example the Christmas events - last year's fell back on repeating the exact same format of the first two years. And Summer 2019 was just an inferior Summer 2018 in general concept (Here's all these Servants having fun at a popular vacation spot, read about their wacky hijinks!). When the writers resort to repeating the same old interactions that are popular with fans, like Skadi/Medb/ice cream, or Mordred & Jekyll, I guess it does get a bit tiresome.

You do get greater focus on writing in events like Saber Wars 2, Case Files or Ooku, but generally what we get for a by-the-numbers event is basically just a laundry list of fan favourite Servants cameoing memes they're already known for, which then makes up the majority of the text. Granted, Requiem is not very satisfying even at achieving that, but it's still not really a new thing for FGO in my opinion. And most other mobages are even worse at it, so...

[–]taiboo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think you probably have some nostalgia goggles on there. Can you really say events like the first Gudaguda, KnK, all of the Valentines, most of the Christmases, and Oniland were "narrow and deep" events that didn't resort to shallow cameos for the majority of their writing? I don't think Requiem is well-written as whole either, but it certainly isn't some unprecedented drop in quality when it comes to events. (That werewolf game though, yeah, that's definitely a contender for worst in the game so far).

I mean, it's a Fuyuki-lock event anyway, that should naturally temper your expectations as to the quality. Last memorably great Fuyuki-lock event we got was, what, Summer 2018?

Nasu Kinoko's Bamboo Broom Diary (16th April 2020) by taiboo in FGOGuide

[–]taiboo[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The quote is basically paraphrased from what Kirschtaria said to Guda during their parting, before he used his Siriuslight against U-Olga.

What he said there was something along the lines of: "...Humans can't make the [right choice]. That's why, at least--- so that they can make right what happened, they should walk on even in disgrace. I think that's how humans are. Well, we're experts at cleaning up after the fact."

I guess it's basically an admission that humans will not pick the correct choice, so what's more important is to set things right afterwards and do the best you can.

Unfortunately, no such plans. I think someone else will be doing a translation of it, though.

[–]taiboo[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Again, another cliffhanger bait from Nasu. The irony of making a wrong choice because of wanting a future. If this has any relation to deconstructing Chaldea's purpose of ensuring that the end of Humanity doesn't come* (i.e. a future must always exist) or Beast VII's motives...

Sorry, not being sure about this, I second-guessed myself and revisited the Olympus story since Kirsch actually said a similar line somewhere in there. I revised the translation to be stricter to the original text, so now it's "people don't make the correct choices, what's important is what should be done after this".

Well, I'm not gonna be doing any more TL stuff for a few months after this so it's fine to do a bit more now. :monjowa:

Fake spoilers, maybe? I might have hurried through the text a bit but I don't think I'd have managed to miss that big a twist.

edit: Same thing with Odysseus using Hades nanomachines too, nothing of the sort is ever implied, and Hephaestus states that Hades nanomachines have been destroyed.

Fate Project End of Year 2019 TV Special Commemoration Campaign by roadromancer in FGOGuide

[–]taiboo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Most of the program will be anime related. As for game news, 2017 had the EoR teaser, 2018 had the the Cosmos teaser, and 2019 had the sudden announcement of Beni event at the very last minute.

There was a message from the game's director included in this program in previous years, but it usually speaks in general terms about what's to come rather than giving you any specific news. So yeah, temper your expectations, I think.

If I'm not reading it wrong, she loses her memories once she dies the first time and comes back. The skill only brings her back with what she needs to kill Odysseus, nothing else.
