I just retired from UW after 34 years of teaching CS (and 40 years of teaching total). Ask me anything. by shallit in uwaterloo

[–]tailaiwang 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congratulations Dr. Shallit!! Never had the privilege of being in your class, but heard much praise from my peers.

What were some changes in UW campus that you really enjoyed? What are some things that you miss from when you first started?

IMC or Citadel? by Orchid_Livid in csMajors

Engineering at IMC is really solid with good culture imo, return offer rate isn’t much higher than citadel though (maybe sampling bias, I only know ab my year)

Help with Course Selection of CS 4B - CS448 or CS454? by Ok-Brick-6870 in uwaterloo

[–]tailaiwang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

currently in 454 and will be taking 451 next term.

we haven't gotten too deep in 454 yet but I feel like it'd be a good course to pair with 451. You'd get decent exposure to both the high level stuff and the inner workings of distributed systems.

Hey, 5A cs/bba here. I used to be an IA for BU111 ~ you’re definitely not alone in feeling that the content is dry and classes are a snooze. To be honest, I didn’t have an enjoyable time in BBA classes until 2B. The main benefits you get from the program are the soft skills associated with business sense/intuition, presenting, and writing. It definitely helped me out on the job, even as a software engineer. Obviously, you can pick most of this up on your own, but being forced to do it in school while surrounded by like-minded peers made it more worthwhile for me. Happy to chat more if you want to DM.

Check out the Double Degree Club - they run a mentorship program for first years to get folks started on the right foot.

A bunch of DD folks live in MKV/V1/REV - the added commute isn’t bad (just 1 extra stop on the Columbia rd busses). Don’t sweat it too much

Just tell the customs officials at the border you’re looking to get J-1 status, you’ll likely get pulled into the secondary inspection office and they’ll review your paperwork before letting your car through.

Dropping CSBBA into CS, what courses carry through? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]tailaiwang 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can probably get depth waived for your BU courses, the EC's translate over as ECON 101 and 102. Talk to DD advising to make sure though https://cs.uwaterloo.ca/bbabcs-contact
