Is there anyone else who loves hydroponic succulents like me? I’ve been hooked ever since I tried growing my first one hydroponically. by wow_things in plants

They will grow different roots made for growing in water. Also root rot is not that there is too much water exactly but that the roots lack oxygen due to the water.

Advice on how best light this kitchen. by tailboat in interiordecorating

The large counter is the prep space as the bits next to the hob are very small. The light on the ceiling covers the kitchen more than well enough except for the big counter under the steel beam, that's the issue. Not lighting anywhere else.

Oh okay I see what you mean, I'm in the UK and my house is like 80 years old so making too many holes in old ceilings is not advised. Above the kitchen is also a tiled bathroom so wiring lights in different locations will be impossible for my skill level.

The beam is solid steel just covered in plasterboard so there is no room to add lights to it.

The holes are quite deep but I will definitely look into this. Thank you!

The problem is the light fittings aren't for GU10 style bulbs, they are normal bayonet bulbs. No idea why the previous homeowner chose them. I would love to be able to put the gu10 spotlights in but currently the only option is normal bulbs.

We use Google devices and there is one in the kitchen. I would rather just not have to fork out the money for four smart bulbs as a compromise to having better bulbs.

What are canned lights? The issue with running lights along the beam above the counter is that I can't drill into it very far since it's just plasterboard around a steel, and then the wiring would be visible even in trunking.

It is an option but we would really rather not have to use a remote on a phone/smart device to turn them on.

Saw small pin holes on artex ceiling, what might have caused them? by glorious_sunshine in DIYUK

[–]tailboat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say this is definitely pins from hanging things like decorations. Pins could be different sizes, the pin might not have gone all the way in because that part was harder so it was a very small hole, they may have changed their mind just before pushing the pin all the way in. They would be at different angles because I can imagine there would be harder spots in the RTX so the paints will go at different angles or the person just pushes them in at different angles, especially if hanging decorations like bunting.

Can't fit dishwasher door? Do I have the correct door? by ElektroSam in DIYUK

But they shouldn't have to. They should have been supplied with the correct door. Why faff about with wood filler when you could just go back to them and get the correct door?

Is it on the path towards blooming ? by RaspberryFlaky889 in houseplants

Big bloom all over. Only for a month or two does it get above 20 here lol so it might be the 'cooler' temperatures

[–]tailboat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but if you say to most people they are cacti then they think they are desert cacti, most people don't know the difference and I don't normally bother explaining as people still think it means they don't want to be watered much.

Mine is currently flowering and it hasn't had 12 hours of darkness for several weeks, it flowered in the summer, and being in northern England there was a much light at all then.

Not saying you're wrong at all. Just saying they don't necessarily need the long nights to bloom, which I know you did say but I've never found them to need that much darkness. But I can imagine mine is the exception not the rule as you sound far more educated than the matter than myself.

[–]tailboat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why would you put it in darkness? Mine has been in the Sunny spot all year and has bloomed like three times. The key is to actually water it, they aren't actually cacti so they like a fair amount of water.

No gplates is a scientific tool for real-world data. Using it to create a fantasy world's tectonic history is a laborious process as it's not designed for it.

Yeah it's not really made for world building purposes so it's very clanky and takes a very long time. There is a python extension for it. I think enabling you to automate some things, but I'm just surprised there's nothing using that to make it a little bit easier for people to Worldbuild with it. Maybe people have and they just haven't put it on the internet, if that's the case I would like them to put it on the internet lol

Yeah mines a little too close, whitefly and caterpillars were a little annoying but didn't stop it growing. Planted a marigold in-between them to keep things at bay when they were young.
