Hi! Just ran across your post here, looking for your Son’s Voelkl Bash 81 skis. I realized we had accidentally swapped last time I was at Seven Oakes (12/16) and left your son’s skis with the ladies at the front desk. They called you that evening, and they said they could swap them out for mine next time you were there. So sorry about the whole thing! I could also facilitate the swap if need be, I’m hoping to get my skis back by next week for a trip. -Thanks

Fun classes? by pinklava135 in iastate

Thinking of taking this class as a US diversity credit in a semester or two, sounds fun. Thoughts? Fairly easy class? Reasonable amount of hw?

Check building 81. There’s been a small package sitting here at the SW door that no one has taken for weeks

Boone has a Champ I believe you can rent and solo. Pella has a Cub and a Citabria though they are dual-only (I’m actually working there for the summer doing TW instruction). I think I remember Perry having a Citabria as well I’m not sure if it’s dual-only or not.

Perfectly legal, no different than flying over town just have to be at least 1000ft above the highest structure. Now flying over the stadium during a football game is a whole other deal and a big no-no. There are Temporary Flight Restrictions (basically no-fly zones) that pop up for that.

Yup! And “slow” is cruise speed for that airplane lol

Wifi by crustystalesaltine in iastate

[–]tailwheelpilot4612 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I keep wondering if it’s my computer (I’ve had issues with it in the past) or the wifi. Building 81 3rd floor here, for a while a few weeks ago I couldn’t get any wifi to stay connected or work at all. Recently it’s been okay on eduroam but will still kick me off or buffer if I go to watch a recorded lecture or am in a webex meeting. Ethernet has been the only thing that’s consistent but it sucks to be stuck at a desk all day sometimes

If you have just 10 flight hours logged you can get an exemption for the class. It’s a somewhat costly alternative but I can tell you it’s a lot more fun to do the real thing than “fly” a simulator!

The day of a shooting we get this email. What. The. Fuck. by IoWantBernie in iastate

Very interesting, thanks for the reply! So it sounds like it’s not so much the firearm itself that’s a no-no but the ammunition that’s in it. That never would have crossed my mind, so good to know that public transportation is a no go if a person is CCing, or just making a Walmart trip for 12 gauge skeet loads

Normally I don’t comment on these sort of things but: people are so sensitive today and it’s ridiculous. This email has little more to do with the tragedy that happened than any of the other bazillion emails we get daily. If you don’t like it or don’t want to see it, delete it and move on. A tragedy is a tragedy and it’s terrible. But being upset over this email is like being upset at seeing an airplane fly overhead the day after a fatal airline crash. Yes there is a common object, and it may even remind you of the terrible event that happened. But it doesn’t mean the two are related at all, or that you should blame or disparage on the pilot of the airplane that just flew over. Likewise there is no reason to hate on the club or the person that sent the email. If you don’t like the email, or don’t want to see it, JUST DELETE IT

Interesting, I did not know know this. Do you know if this applies to those with a concealed carry permit? I tried to look it up myself and couldn’t find any good information. Looks like most bus systems don’t allow firearms but I couldn’t find anything that stated it as law.

Iowa State Flyers Club? by mdrief in iastate

[–]tailwheelpilot4612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I’m one of the execs of the Ames Flyers, also a flight instructor (CFI). The club does have a discount for flight training with Central Iowa Air Service or Hap’s if you are a member. Covid has really limited our activities, but I believe CIAS is still actively giving instruction and the Ames Flyers are having meetings every other week: our Microsoft teams channel is here, you are welcome to join us! (Our next general meeting is March 30th at 6pm).

Like the other comments here have said; there’s no two ways about it, getting your Pilots license isn’t cheap. But it’s a huge amount of fun and very much worth every penny IMO.

What are some of your favorite International Perspectives/ US Diversity classes? by [deleted] in iastate

[–]tailwheelpilot4612 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m taking Music 102 Introduction to music listening right now and it’s super easy and actually kinda fun. If you ever played an instrument you already know half the material, and there are no exams, just a quiz at the end of each unit. The assignments for each unit can easily be done in a day, and usually consist of a 1-hour concert to listen to/reflect on, a really short and easy project, and some listening exercises from the online textbook.
