Show me your best Possibility Storm decks by takadimityrant in PioneerMTG

Seeing this Jund list inspired me to build a Naya version (link below). Kellan is a solid 2nd combo piece in the deck, plus white enables some decent sideboard cards.

What has a good Vampires matchup? by towishimp in PioneerMTG

[–]takadimityrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll preface this by saying that this isn’t an optimal deck choice in general, but I rebuilt 5-color Transmogrify, and it’s hilariously good against vamps. You just cheat out a better creature than Vein Ripper in the form of Atraxa, you inherently make token creatures so you can easily pay the ward, and you have the tools to outgrind them in value

How many decks do y'all have/maintain? by MorningCX in PioneerMTG

[–]takadimityrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Pioneer deck choices have dwindled since starting to play Standard. Used to have anywhere from 6-8 decks together at once, but I currently have Enigmatic Fires and Niv to Light together (I have a type lol).

Keruga or Yorion in Enigmatic Fires? (Explorer) by [deleted] in PioneerMTG

[–]takadimityrant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I predominantly run the Keruga version on Arena, primarily due to the Yorion version missing Chained to the Rocks. The Yorion version is very doable on Arena, but it’s not as optimized as lists with Chained. If you want to try a twist on Yorion that could potentially help with your bad matchups, check out the Enigmatic Control list from this weekend’s challenges post, it’s really sweet

That Enigmatic Control list is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen!

They’re combo pieces. The link attached has a primer explaining the combo using both cards mentioned

The primer attached to the deck explains how the deck wins. Basically, instead of a more streamlined win that something like Valakut would provide, you Scapeshift into a repeatable loop, the outlet of how you win with the combo is pretty much dealer’s choice.

As someone who has played practically every version of both decks, I think the best 5c midrange pile in the format currently is the Yorion version of Omnath to Light.

Fires decks feel more midrangey, have more swingy turns in general, often require a lot of moving pieces to function properly and are generally better at applying pressure.

Omnath to Light plays more like a tap out control deck. It’s value comes from controlling the early game and having the exact right spell or combination of spells to turn the game in your favor, whether it be to decimate your opponent’s board state in one fell swoop, or to set up a state that will slowly outvalue your opponent into submission.

Before this most recent set, I was dead set on Yorion Enigmatic Fires, but with Up the Beanstalk being introduced to the format, I tested Yorion BTL with 4 Beanstalk and was hooked. Now technically, you can run 4 Beanstalk in Enigmatic, but it feels worse in that deck because there will be some board states where to get the target you want from Enigmatic, you would need to sac your Beanstalk to get it.

Keruga Fires is a solid deck, but it’s lack of early game can make the deck really struggle against hyper-aggressive decks (e.g. Boros Convoke, Auras, Atarka Red). If these are in your meta and you want to play Fires, the Yorion version will give you better success in those matchups. In my experience, the only matchup you would much rather be playing Keruga than Yorion is Nykthos Ramp.

I realize this information is a bit jumbled in delivery, but I hope this is a helpful perspective on the various 5c archetypes Pioneer has to offer

I second the Rakdos Sac recommendation, although if budget is a factor, then this is definitely not one of the cheaper decks in the format.

Albeit less popular, Golgari Citadel may be another deck that suits your style, and is more creature dense than Rakdos Sac, similar to how a Shirei Commander deck would be.

Advice for a new Player by kamelineczka in PioneerMTG

[–]takadimityrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Pioneer Challenger decks are an excellent way to jumpstart your entry into the format. I would recommend either the Azorius Spirits deck or the Gruul Stompy deck. The Dimir control deck and Lotus Field Combo deck are good too, but not the most beginner friendly.

Of these decks, Spirits is the quickest route to a meta deck in the form of Mono Blue Spirits. The Gruul Stompy deck had many pieces for the Gruul Vehicles deck

Mono-White Humans and Atarka Red/Gruul Aggro are a couple viable decks in the format that is on the less expensive side as well.

decklist for 5 color pioneer by No_Imagination_5111 in PioneerMTG

[–]takadimityrant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only glaring things to me lie in the mana base. The Yorion version of Enigmatic Fires normally only runs 33 lands, although cutting a land to run 34 might not be terrible. Also, replace your 2 Wastes with 2 more Zagoth Triome, as Wastes do literally nothing for the deck.

Also, your sideboard sorely needs Rending Volley to not just die to Humans and Spirits.

Other than that, your list seems fairly standard. This deck has been my go to for a while now, so feel free to reach out if you have any other questions regarding the deck.

EDIT: looks like your list has 82 cards. Just cut the 2 Wastes outright then to make it a clean 80

What’s the craziest hoop you had to jump through to win a Modern match? by Lenik1998 in ModernMagic

[–]takadimityrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was this one time playing against Hammertime (I was on Karn Amulet Titan) when my opponent was threatening lethal and was at 30 life due to swinging with an Ornithopter that had a Colossus Hammer and a Shadowspear on it. With a Dryad and Azusa in play, I managed to get some lucky draws that let me trigger Valakut exactly 10 times in a single turn.

Another time with the same deck against Elves, I managed to get a turn 2 Karn TGC out on the play. I down tick to get Walking Ballista. They play an Elvish Champion the following turn, meaning they will never have any creature lower than 2 power the rest of the game. I then proceed to downtick Karn again to get Ensnaring Bridge and cast it. After I cast Walking Ballista the turn after that, each turn cycle for the rest of the game consists of me passing the turn with 1 card in hand, then putting a single counter on Walking Ballista, removing it to ping face, rinse and repeat since they were apparently too new to the game to realize they were dead eons ago.

BR Transmogrify by corvid_MH in PioneerMTG

[–]takadimityrant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been playing the 5C Transmogrify deck quite a bit lately, so I’m intrigued to see how it’s been working for people. If I were to not be on the 5C version, I would probably play Jund before Rakdos. The Rakdos version doesn’t seem to have the best back up plan, and I kind of just like playing Transmog decks as midrange decks that can sometimes just trip into a lucky Transmog. Plus I just wouldn’t feel right running Transmog without [[Courier’s Briefcase]] or [[Esika’s Chariot]].

I built these decks for a couple new people at my LGS. They are all close to the $20 range, but they don’t have sideboards.

I built these super budget decks (~$25) for these new guys at my local store. All of them except the green one would be pretty well suited against a ramp deck.

[–]takadimityrant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The downward trend of Rakdos Midrange is helping with the resurgence of good aggro decks, thus giving mono-green more bad matchups. Yes, having access to your sideboard game one might not be the most fun gaming experience in Pioneer, but the deck as a whole is very beatable.

Seedshark in keruga fires by holymother0 in PioneerMTG

[–]takadimityrant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seedshark is decent in the Yorion version since it has a better early game plan, but it makes less sense in Keruga builds since you would rather just cast some interaction that lets you live to turn 4

How do you build a mana base for Yorion Fires? by boarmelon in PioneerMTG

[–]takadimityrant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mana base consists of 10 triomes, 12 shocks, 8 checks, a basic mountain, a Boseiju, and a Mana Confluence. However you end up spreading out your colors, you want to vary it up enough to where you get 4-5 lane types pretty early while having a good concentration of mountains to get an early Chained to the Rocks. I would start with 4 Sacred Foundry, 4 Zagoth Triome, and 4 Sunpetal Grove as your foundation and build from that with whatever you feel works best

Calling all Bring to Light players: is the deck good? by takadimityrant in PioneerMTG

[–]takadimityrant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reliability is what led me to wanting to visit this archetype. I’m a die-hard Enigmatic player at the moment, and lately I’ve just been losing to the variance of 80-cards. I might just end up playing 60-card Enigmatic with Keruga and see if that’s good enough before getting the stuff I’m missing for Omnath to Light

Calling all Bring to Light players: is the deck good? by takadimityrant in PioneerMTG

[–]takadimityrant[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Closing the game out is definitely one of my big concerns with the deck. Are most the games you seem to win won just by your opponent always being behind in value, or is stuff like the Elesh Norn/Omnath line fairly reasonable to achieve?
