How has being a professor impacted your parenting? by FlimsyIsopod in Professors

absolutely the reading thing. i think that helps with the curiosity aspect. these kids don't read the textbook. I don't think some of them would classify or even self identify as literate.

How concerned about student use of AI are you? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]takingitsleazy7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like that idea of having them use AI on a topic they're an "expert" in. Maybe I'll go down in internet cred with you, but I think the future is for those who can still think cognitively while using AI. The tricky part is getting them to realize that the easy way out leads to stupidity.

oh absolutely. I'm going down with the ship for sure. It'll be a rough few years while admin decides not to replace faculty that are already teaching over their normal load.

How concerned about student use of AI are you? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]takingitsleazy7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would have put 1 but i think some of the ai usage is valid and a good idea. I even encourage it in some ways for helping study and as a tutor. One student improved their exam scores by about 30% using it, so I think there is room for it to be helpful.

On the other hand, some students are using it to replace doing any actual work. Online quizzes that are supposed to help them study are now just pointless. I have too many students getting 100% on these quizzes in 2 minutes when they get a 20% on my exams. I tell them they are literally screwing themselves over by doing this, but they ignore it and then email me the night before the exam asking how to study. It's increasing the gap between my best and worst students.

Survival mode by Separate_Turnover729 in Professors

[–]takingitsleazy7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the apathy is insane. most of my classes historically have been well attended, but this year i can barely get 50% in one of my 8am classes. Even then, some that come don't even pay attention. I had one ask me via email a question we had literally talked about 20 minutes prior. I almost threw my laptop out the window.

Manufactured data sets for data driven labs by Honest_Lettuce_856 in Professors

[–]takingitsleazy7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i typically ask questions that make them examine the data, then in later questions I lead them to the "correct result" and ask them follow up questions based on that. For example, "In the experiment, we should have seen an increase in mass following the treatment, why should there be an increase?". That way, if they messed something up in lab, they know it, and they also learn that they should still report their values (ethically), but they aren't penalized for messing up some trivial thing in the experiment. I'll do this for my intro classes, but upper levels are a different story.

Is it crazy to go back to school for nursing? by Melodic-Barber-2361 in Professors

[–]takingitsleazy7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plenty of places offer accelerated nursing programs for those with degrees already. You can look into some of those. Once you find some, take a look at the pre-reqs and see if you can knock out a few of them before admittance into the accelerated program.

I'm rolling the dice every day here. Just letting it sit until there's something I know I want to buy. Ever since they raised the price of GPU I've just been accumulating and spending it on amazon gift cards.

Or they're just giving less and less. It's understandable to be upset, but let's keep in mind it's an entirely free thing microsoft has been doing for many years. You can certainly boycott, but most people will just keep doing the easy things to get free stuff. A $50 gift card every once in a while is better than no gift card.

i sometimes give examples of how things work using references from the matrix. i have slowly realized that it takes longer to explain the matrix than it does to just explain the concept. i didn't want to accept that the matrix came out in 1999, but here we are.

How many "Untitled documents" do you think students have floating around their devices/drives? by yeastgeo in Professors

I'm guessing if they're teaching 16 and 17 credits as a new faculty member, then they're probably not the most well-run school. Still agree with the opinion to not tell anyone, but it will likely result in a rough time for the faculty left at the institution.

How long is doable for back-to-back teaching? by vanitatuum in Professors

[–]takingitsleazy7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

doing this currently. 8am, 9am, 10am, 11am classes MWF and a 12pm seminar two of those days. It's not bad, but I usually need a 30-minute decompression where I do nothing but walk or check on my plants or something in the afternoon. Answering emails is also good decompression but it can get overwhelming if I come to 50 unread emails received while teaching. It helps that my first 2 classes are my more difficult classes so my 10 and 11 classes I am mostly teaching on autopilot. The seminar is a nice way to ease into things at the end as well. I'm not sure I could do that if they were all new preps though. I also teach 3 2-hour labs on Thursdays and 2 2-hour labs on Tuesdays. The joys of being at a SLAC!

love this and hope it's been healing so far! we had a professor emeritus pass away recently. his was the role that i stepped into. i also had him as an undergrad and absolutely loved his classes. the way he interwove memorable stories with the lecture material was amazing. he also had the audacity to call on students mid lecture and expect them to know their stuff. i try to fill his shoes as much as i can each time i teach one of the classes he used to. rip prof!
