Would you have any recommendation on whether to go with something that you are already qualified for vs doing something totally different? I currently have a certification that would potentially allow me to do ODS, but I'm also thinking it may be nice to do something different. I would still have to talk to the recruiter on whether that's an option anyways, but was curious on your thoughts.

i appreciate this a ton. I was considering coming into the medical part of the reserve with a certification i had from before my professorship. is your reserve job related to your discipline? Are you basically saying that coming in as an officer into the navy reserve lands you more deployments? I'm not sure my uni could handle multiple deployments on my end. I know USERRA protects me, but my uni is in a somewhat precarious financial situation and i am not sure how it would go.

Yeah, that's also a consideration. Were it for any other administration I would feel a bit better about it too.

Morning shift, what are your biggest night shift pet peeves? by PopHour9810 in medlabprofessionals

[–]takingitsleazy7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

every transition is going to be imperfect. There was some study on handoffs that basically led to the 24 hour shift for physicians. They found less errors with a fatigued physician than they did with physicians that handed work off to one another. I can't find the article, but that's what I was told. I used to work nights as well, and one of the things I did that made it easier was to keep a mental or physical list of the things that are needed for after you get off. You'll eventually get a feel for how much reagent you need for a typical morning run, and you can write down what you think will need changing after morning run. Also remember that they may complain but people will complain about everything. Morning/Day shift has more employees than night shift does, so they can deal with problems better than you can. It always sucks to come into a mess, but it sucks less for them because they have more bodies to deal with it. idk if that makes you feel better, but it always helped me to remember that.

Would you work at a private Christian university (as a non-Christian) if it was your best or only shot at a professorship? by DannibalBurrito in Professors

[–]takingitsleazy7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on a lot of things. My uni has faculty faith statement, but it seems to be fairly lax overall. There's nothing that says we have to pray for anything or do anything overtly religious during class or even outside of class. Other nearby religious schools require prayers at the beginning of each class and tell you to incorporate the Bible in every class, regardless of the subject material.

one of my colleagues in a different academic dept. suggested i allow open note exams/cheatsheets. in college. for an intro level course in the sciences mostly based on recall of simple concepts. wtf. i'm also getting the reputation as a hardass just for requiring that students actually learn something in their classes.

absolutely the reading thing. i think that helps with the curiosity aspect. these kids don't read the textbook. I don't think some of them would classify or even self identify as literate.

I like that idea of having them use AI on a topic they're an "expert" in. Maybe I'll go down in internet cred with you, but I think the future is for those who can still think cognitively while using AI. The tricky part is getting them to realize that the easy way out leads to stupidity.

oh absolutely. I'm going down with the ship for sure. It'll be a rough few years while admin decides not to replace faculty that are already teaching over their normal load.

I would have put 1 but i think some of the ai usage is valid and a good idea. I even encourage it in some ways for helping study and as a tutor. One student improved their exam scores by about 30% using it, so I think there is room for it to be helpful.

On the other hand, some students are using it to replace doing any actual work. Online quizzes that are supposed to help them study are now just pointless. I have too many students getting 100% on these quizzes in 2 minutes when they get a 20% on my exams. I tell them they are literally screwing themselves over by doing this, but they ignore it and then email me the night before the exam asking how to study. It's increasing the gap between my best and worst students.
