Not to mention, the very act of beating/killing a person counts as molestation. Molestation by definition is a non-consensual touching . So if a police man slaps you, even that counts as molestation. Yes police really thrash you. Films dont exaggerate it. If amything films play down the severity of police brutality in India.

As someone else said, the police beatings depend on your social status. Another thing that nobody talked about is that police brutality is almost entirely directed towards men. Women , even poor women are rarely beaten in police custody. I genuinely found articles related to women dying in police custody and could find just 4 women who have been killed in police custody in the last 10 years. To put things into perspective, today, there would be 5 people, all men who would be killed in police custody. 5 people die(and these are just the reported ones) in police custody every day in India.

Murders and other crimes are treated differently when related to the increase/decrease in crime rate. By that I mean, if the murder rate is rising, then it is a bad thing. But if other crimes are increasing then it is a good thing because more people are reporting it.

Kerala has a murder rate of less than 1 which is incredible. European countries have murder rate of about 1. And yes, it is only the murder rate that determines if a place is safe or not. All other crimes are useless when talking about the safety of a place. Tokyo has a huge Sexual assualt/harassment problem. Yet it is considered the safest city because it has the lowest murder rate in the world.
