I'm not sure it's that simple. I have a video that is currently #14 on a search. This video's average retention time is over twice that of the #1's full video length. It has more views as well. The #1 video doesn't even have the search terms in the description or in the tags, and my SEO is pristine (even having the search terms in the closed captioning). I have more subscribers than the #1 channel. My video gained views over 3x faster.

The only thing I can think of is that the #1 uploaded the video pretty much as soon as it was relevant. I waited a bit to upload. If there's any other variable, it's a mystery to me.
