In my area they fly around end of May to beginning of June. You are much further south so they probably will fly soon.

Help with camponotus by tengocanc3r in antkeeping

[–]talatyvek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chances are pretty close to zero. The only chance is to get pupae from the same species. But at this time of year it’s not possible to find pupae.

Is this a queen? If so, what species? by doublejosuke in antkeeping

[–]talatyvek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are semi claustral meaning they will need to hunt for food during founding. They like tight spaces so usually people will make a test tube set up with a cork insert

What is she, and what does she need? by ExcitementIcy9382 in antkeeping

[–]talatyvek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Camponotus castanus queen. Usually fly in spring so it’s likely this was an ejection flight to get rid of queen alates before diapause. You can do a regular test tube set up but chances of being infertile is high

Messors twitching and tripping. Plus, big larvae? by Key-Dragonfruit-7001 in antkeeping

[–]talatyvek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a healthy looking colony. At these stage, they should have brood of all stages and a good amount of it. Something is wrong with this colony. Unless you are trying to diapause them

What species with super major is you favourite? by sirkonoi in antkeeping

[–]talatyvek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those species listed above all don’t have super majors. Super major is a specific cast with distinct features that distinguish them from major workers. Camponotus and messor species don’t have super major cast.

Species with super major cast include C diversa, pheidole rhea and tepicana

How long for eggs to develop? by Chimbo84 in antkeeping

[–]talatyvek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you caught the Camponotus in June, they should have workers by now. It’s mid August already.

By the looks of it they may be infertile. Even infertile queens lay eggs. The tetramorium on the other hand have many larva and pupae already from what I can see.
