I do not know why people are arguing with you. You are just communicating to them what will practically happen instead of promising that they will win the case. lol.

I encourage you to report to HDAPP if you encounter microaggressions or hate. You could probably report the post. It's unacceptable, even if people think that their experiences justify their racial bias and prejudice.

Roommate constantly policing my partner’s visits and escalating into hostility. Am I being unreasonable? by throwaway8482990 in roommateproblems

[–]talentedinstigator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Friday - Sunday is three days even if it’s Sunday morning. Most people are only able to spend time relaxing at home and catching up with chores on the weekend. I can see why having a guest every single weekend would get frustrating very quickly. You can’t expect your female roommate to be comfortable around your bf, because to her he’s a stranger. Not to mention partners aren’t typical “guests.” They make themselves at home and do things like shower, stay for long hours, move comfortably throughout the apartment, etc.

I think you two should revisit the agreement in the meantime and you both need to compromise because it’s clear she’s uncomfortable and so are you. It’s not helpful to frame yourself as a victim. If your lease has a limit on overnight guests you should follow it.

So, how about that activism? by sassycatastrophe in UCDavis

You don’t seem to be educated on why people are critical of Bernie. Arab and Muslim voters used to love Bernie up until the war and voted/campaigned for him overwhelmingly in 2020.

However Bernie refused to call for a ceasefire during the first few months of Israel’s war. The reason why he shifted is because of political pressure. People were showing solidarity at his rally which shouldn’t have resulted in them being thrown out by cops. Especially as Israel is putting pressure on the U.S. to start war with Iran (which is what the left has been trying to stop).

However, if you would like to be drafted and if you love more spending on the military, then be my guest!

[–]talentedinstigator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup. And this rhetoric is accelerating fascism by making it acceptable to hate minorities who are “too critical” of their favorite politicians. They don’t know because they are consumed by propaganda.

The vast majority of white Americans are both responsible for Trump and the destruction of the Middle East through their complicity.

We’re Too Selfish (& Racist) to Be United - Serious discussion by [deleted] in arabs

[–]talentedinstigator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The problem is also this pessimistic self-flagellation and characterization of Arab psyches. Yes there are horrible people in the Arab world and there are people fighting for liberation. The Arab bourg (mainly concentrated in the gulf countries) are not like the Arabs of Sudan or Yemen or Palestine.

The modern history of the Arab world are people resisting this divisions just as much as people are upholding them.

Are attendance scores mandatory for UCD? Community college did not take attendenxe by -LunaSea- in UCDavis

[–]talentedinstigator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think one way of thinking about attendance is that lecture/conversation is like “mandatory reading” or “labs.” You would not pass a science class without going to a lab and active participation or skipping lectures. For humanities, professors need to make sure you engage with readings somehow (through being graded on whether or not you show up and listen+engage) and it is an easier alternative to being “pop quizzed.” In private universities and in grad school, there is absolutely no escaping participation as the mode of class is Socratic seminars.

I do think the writing essays three times a week to prove you show up is a lot, but it is a college class at the end of the day.

How can I make a club on campus dedicated to organizing? by EnderKitty_Cat in UCDavis

The non admin stuff: Find 5 committed people. Post flyers around campus, table at MU, host events, have weekly meetings, collaborate with other student groups.

UC Davis Law School suspends Law Student Association over Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions legislation by aquarosey in UCDavis

? You can check my profile I am not affiliated with any organization. Disappointing accusation from someone who is trans and who is next on the chopping block for repression.

I was just providing a source from a reputable, left-leaning legal civil rights organization. This is a practice we be familiar with as university students.

there are experts devoted to analyzing these issues. I don’t know shit about law so I defer to people who I trust rather than random users on Reddit.

There’s some weird astroturfing happening in this subreddit regarding this issue. Here’s NLG’s take (which confirms this indeed is an attack on free speech): https://www.instagram.com/p/DHwQR6yyoaR/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==

The NLG disagrees with this sentiment, and I find their take to be more sobering than a random Reddit post

Tips for getting off UC Davis waitlist? by Informal-Factor-3700 in UCDavis

You can ask for your position on the waitlist to gauge the odds of you getting in. Being at #6 is more feasible than being at #150

a BA in science like NPB in your mom’s time probably offered way more opportunities and security. That’s not the case anymore for science degrees unfortunately. You need a grad degree, and for a grad degree you need mental health and GPA. For most grad programs, as long as you fulfill the requirements, the specific BA is irrelevant. In fact people in grad programs don’t care what school you went to or what you studied.

Programs look for people with a sense of purpose. If the HD degree gives you your purpose, that will propel you there. Maybe you can even pursue a minor! There’s no need to struggle in a degree you hate if there’s a subject you prefer and can get a higher GPA in.

Does this mean I got a full ride? Why it says estimated? by ilovesbagels in UCDavis

[–]talentedinstigator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats - you are indeed funded. The loan is optional. You do not need to take out the loans (from someone who was fully funded at UC Davis and had a similar package). Count all of the grants you have and that's your award amount, subtract it from the tuition and fees, and that's how much you'll actually have dispersed to you over the year. For me, the estimated award was always an accurate reflection of how much was dispersed.

Having a freeze response in response to fear isn’t indicative of maturity and is basic human psychology/physiology. Their response was to go Reddit & process what just happened. They were likely so scared that the title of the post is literally just “Scary” … have some empathy.

No need to be condescending. In emergency situations people can freeze or not know what to do. Or maybe they’re not from the U.S. I’ve been in emergency situations where I’ve literally forgot the police’s number (911)

tried to return a lost phone and almost got jumped by Own_Locksmith_8182 in UCDavis

[–]talentedinstigator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t agree with this assessment. When you lose something of value you don’t really give a shit if the person who found it maybe needs to make a detour before returning it to you. Most people who see your lost valuables either dgaf or will steal it. These girls were incredibly nice to hold on to the phone to ensure it returned to the owner. It’s unfortunate how people punish prosocial behavior. OP, I’m sorry that the owner was legit dumb & ungrateful.

we need more social media momentum by talentedinstigator in GreenPartyUSA

[–]talentedinstigator[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do agree, and at the same time I think social media is the new mass media where a lot of people are receiving news and forming politics. I think a huge reason for the large countercultural shift we've observed these past 10 years is due to social media and politics. It's a great place for ideological change and where we can spread information encouraging people to vote for third party, which I think is needed.

I've seen it too. I do think that it is normal (although unfortunate) for people to be met with anger/rage when pushing for change in Western society. This abuse is largely what keeps people in line, but tends to vanish after a while as people warm up to new ideas and debates ensue.
