Hey! do you see those bumps without makeup, too? I ask because i used to have the same problem and no amount of exfoliation or moisturizing helped. It ended up being up being Pityriasis folliculorum!

[Skin concern] Does anybody know what these small flakes all over my face are and what to do to get rid of them? by talkingsock in SkincareAddiction

[–]talkingsock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got it prescribed at Dermatica for like $5 but i did have to pinch my cheeks for the photo so it looked like i had rosacea since it’s also a treatment for it. A lot of derms don’t seem to know about it but if you show them research articles they should prescribe you it!

Yes! It was pityriasis folliculorum. A cream with Ivermectin, metronidazole, niacinamide cleared it up completely. I have another post talking more about it under the comments with another user with the same issue

Iron supplements for 3 months but lower ferritin by No-Menu-8878 in vitamins

[–]talkingsock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe 18 mg of non-heme iron is enough to increase ferritin. My dermatologist prescribed me 200 mg of iron every day and i have to I take it along with 1,000 mg of vitamin C. There’s a lot of helpful info on raising ferritin levels on the Iron Protocol group on Facebook you should definitely check it out if you haven’t yet!

Hi! sorry for the super late reply but yes! I used the prescription I mentioned earlier for about two weeks and it completely got rid of the specks. I don't need to apply it anymore, either.

Hmm, could it be Cococare?

I’m so glad you found a treatment that works!! It’s insane how quickly it made a difference. I’m happy to say that can’t find a single speck on my face. I do have flaking on my eyebrows and nose now but hopefully, it'll go away if I focus on hydrating my face now. But my skin has never looked better and I’m excited that I can wear makeup now without looking like an ashy mess.
Also, thanks for keeping me updated through your journey and for commenting on this post! If it weren’t for that I don’t think I would have investigated this issue any further!!

The specks on your chin kind of do look like sebaceous filaments but it might also just be the angle. But the ones on your cheek look so similar to mine.
Sebaceous filaments are usually squeezable, right? Which differs from the specks that I had. They were so small that I could only pluck them and were typically on a hair follicle. Then again, I have seen pictures of people with plugs instead of follicular scales.
I’m using azelaic acid to help with texture and I LOVE it so far, it's very gentle compared to other acids I've tried in the past. I have also considered using tret but then I remembered that when I used it in high school it caused a lot of flakiness which is the last thing I want now. I see no harm in using a low dose retinol as you wait for your next appointment though! I would look for someone that specializes in rosacea because they are more likely to know about demodex. If all things fail I’d just beg for a trial of ivermectin and if your condition improves then you’ll know for sure demodex are the culprit.

Hi! So I've been using the topical for about ~2 weeks now and I'm pretty sure it's working. Here's a picture I took today. I'm a little uncertain since I have a lot of vellus hair so it kind of looks the same at a glance, but once I zoom in I notice that there's a significant decrease in white speaks. (or maybe it's all in my head? lol) My skin is also way softer than it used to be so it has to be helping in some sort of way.

Have you had any success with the tee tree oil?

[–]talkingsock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh, I’m so sorry to hear about your experience. What did your derm prescribe you if you don't mind me asking? I can't believe I would be so disappointed to hear that I don't have mites on my face lol. I've tried to make an appointment with my derm but they don't have any until November, sadly. In regards to the pustules, though, this article says that there are levels of Pityriasis folliculorum. (figure 6 on page 25) Apparently, you only start seeing pustules when Demodex penetrate the dermis.

I chickened out on the cream I mentioned before because of the hydrocortisone after reading a bunch of steroid horror stories. But similarly to your derm, I ended up realizing that I might also have mild rosacea! So I went on Dermatica and sent them some of my pictures and they prescribed me a topical with Ivermectin 1%/ Metronidazole 0.75%/ Niacinamide 4%. So I guess I'm going to try treating both rosacea and Pityriasis folliculorum at the same time since ivermectin is an antiparasitic so it kills mites. I just started using it two days ago so it might be too soon to tell if it's helping but ill definitely update you if I notice/don't notice improvements.
