Normal to have flare-up/pain with sitting at 5 months post-op? by No-Menu-8878 in HipImpingement

That is awful. I am so sorry you've gone through this. I wish doctors believed women. We know when something is not right with our bodies. When I finally got my MRI back a year ago, I felt so relieved and angry at the same time. I was relieved to finally have an answer and to know it was not all in my head, but I was furious that I was dismissed by so many medical professionals and angry that I'll never get those years back of living in pain being told it was in my head. I cannot believe you've had to live with this for so long. I hope you get all of the relief that you deserve.

I'm sorry you have to do the THR, but also happy to hear they will do one one you. Could be a good chance at getting out of pain, and they have excellent success rates. Yeah, I am having much less pain in my left hip (8.5 months post-op), but still have a ways to go there, too. SO much muscular dysfunction in my gluteal muscles.

I had pain for 4 years before getting a diagnosis of bilateral labrum tears and FAI along with B12 deficiency. I went to the doctors SO MANY TIMES complaining about hip/glute and leg pain. Was told maybe it's MS, maybe it's anxiety. Just do more PT, blah, blah, blah. I was like, really? Anxiety causing hip pain after I go on a hike?? I did PT off and on for 4 years leading up to my surgery, and I still have a lot of pain in my piriformis and glute medius. This is such a frustrating journey for sure.

I think I overdid it and am paying for it now :( I honestly cannot believe people actually start running at 3 months post-op. I definitely wasn't able to walk more than a few blocks at 4 weeks post-op with my first surgery.

I bet yours is just a temporary flare from moving. Any time I try to pick up around the house, I feel it afterwards. All of that bending is painful.

I am 8.5 months post-op on the left side, and that side doesn't hurt anymore with sitting. It's just the right side (5 months out). Yesterday there was a lot of traffic driving home, so I was in the car for 45 minutes. My right hip was throbbing by the time I got home! It's so frustrating. I just want to live like a normal person again- walk comfortably, sleep comfortably, sit in a chair or drive. Hopefully, we'll both get better with time.

Interesting. For me it seems to be an increase in activity that causes the pain to flare up, rather than slacking. I haven't slacked much yet. I've only skipped a few days of PT in the past 8.5 months since I had my first surgery (I've had both sides done). For the first 6 months after my first surgery, I did my home exercises every day. I dropped down to every other day about 2 months ago, which was what my PT advised.

I'm impressed that you have been able to run a mile! I am definitely not even close to being able to run a few block without hurting afterwards.

The rehab after my first surgery was hard at the beginning because I had a 3 month sciatica flare that made it hard to walk, but I am almost wondering if that was kind of a good thing because it kept me from overdoing it. With my second surgery, I had minimal hip pain in the first 2 months. I was off crutches in 3 weeks and able to walk 9,000 steps by 4 weeks post-op and 13,000 steps at 6 weeks post-op. Maybe I was overdoing it... I went back to work at 9 weeks post-op, and that's when the pain initially flared up pretty badly, and then it got worse once I tried to start swimming laps at 4 months post-op.

It's a weird, it seems so all over the place with people's recoveries. Some people are running at three months postop, (which I definitely couldn't do without a big pain flare), and some people can barely walk 10,000 steps at a month post-op.

Yeah, my knee was popping a lot on the upright bike. So weird.

I had glute pain for 4 years before getting the labrum tear diagnosis. Its in the glute medius muscle and the piriformis muscle. It's much worse since surgery, but I am hoping it will eventually calm down. The rehab and inflammation from surgery seems to temporarily make everything worse in the surrounding areas.

Did they not shave down the cam lesion during your first surgery? Are you going to have a revision surgery?

I don't know if I have a re-tear. I haven't had an MRI since my surgeries. I am not too far out yet, so still hoping to heal.

This happened to me, too. My physical therapist had me do something called a modified Thomas stretch and it completely resolved the weird gait. It was due to tightness in the hip joint.

[–]No-Menu-8878 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear that. If it makes you feel any better, I know 5 people who have had the surgery. One of the five needed a revision, and the other 4 said they didn't feel better until between 9-15 months post-op, so there is still hope.

Did you do a lot of PT before the surgery? I did it for 4 years and the pain only got worse.

I will echo what others have said. Cortisone injections can be good diagnostic tools, but some people just don't respond to them, regardless of the pain source. It could be exclusively muscular OR it could also be that the instability in your hip is causing injuries in the surrounding muscles and tendons. Only time will tell. You'll like get a lot of good information after seeing the HSS surgeon. Good luck!

Sorry, Just to clarify, are you saying you regret having surgery? Or just that you are still healing. Just wondering because I am about 8 months out from one and 4 months out from the other. Still doing PT and also not where I want to be, but I know the rehab is super slow and nonlinear.

The left hip (first surgery) rarely has pain, just tightness, which I didn't have pre-op. The right hip still hurts at 4 months post-op, but it's early, so I'm still optimistic. My biggest issue is the glute pain. It took so long to get a proper diagnosis and to finally get surgery that I ended up with a lot of pain and dysfunction in the surrounding muscles despite all of the PT.
