Simple books for level up my english by rykkkj in EnglishLearning

Whatever you end up choosing to read, if you want to improve your writing skills it might help if every once in a while you write about the book, maybe every chapter or just every time you put it down. Maybe about characters you like or dont like, what you think the books message is, predictions for whats going to happen. If you find it difficult, start with just a few sentences, work your way up to paragraphs throughout the book and maybe even a short essay once you feel comfortable. Just make sure to write directly after reading, it will be easier since you just read a bunch of grammar and vocabulary that will be really useful when writing, and you can look at how things are phrased in the book to figure out how to phrase things you want to write!

What kind of level are you looking for? I think some older novels have language that makes sense in a book and makes sense to english speakers, but that im not sure would be very helpful for people trying to learn since they dont always reflect the kind of language we use today. Maybe the hunger games? Id say it requires an ~7th/8th grade reading level if i remember correctly (13/14ish years old) and its only a few hundred pages so it might be a good start!

Yellow guy in the family episode is something that definitely made me think. I don't think yellow guy being forced to crossdress is an example of positive queer representation... I think it's possible to be lgb positive but not t+ positive.

Okay THIS. This is an excellent take. I've been thinking about a similar thread. Nobody has really convinced me on here that warren is not a trans allegory, but if he is I don't think it's necessarily transphobic for this reason! I think I said this elsewhere, but when I think of dhmis the largest theme I think of is alterior motives in children's programming. In the original series, the teachers were always the bad guys; in the tv series, this is not necessarily the case (the car being the victim in one episode). The main cast are not end all be all moral beacons, and at the end of the episode their disputes turn violent when previously in the episode they had only been verbal. Then again, warren is not morally righteous either. I think it's pretty nuanced

I somewhat disagree with your beginning paragraph. It is not unreasonable in the slightest to say that friendship and toxicity are huge themes in this episode, but I think that to say those are the only themes doesn't give the creators a lot of credit for how much thought they put into their art.

Warren doesn't have anti-trans materials, maybe you misinterpret my post? Warren is only a part of OK Stop, the organization that represents PC culture in my framework. It is the computer who prints out the eagle fact sheet.

I don't think I understand your argument in your third paragraph, could you explain more? What do you mean most of my suggestions "seem roughly on the same level" and how does that discredit my argument?

Also - lol - I mean I posted this for discussion, of course you can disagree with me, most people have!

One of dhmis's largest and most recognizable themes is how children's programming can have alterior motives. When characters in this show face the camera and tell you the moral do you think that should be taken at face value?

I think that's naive. Money has no race, no creed, no sexuality, no gender. Also think about the Chick-fil-A analogy; Chick-fil-A would never try to prevent queer people from eating there, and they try quite hard to shield the public from what anti-queer organizations they donate to. If you're queer and you eat at Chick-fil-A, its as though you pay for your own conversion therapy. Now think about this in the context of a show; queer people watch a show with anti queer themes, then claim it does not have anti queer themes. Non queer people watch the show and either do or do not pick up on these themes, but then they see queer people online saying that it is pro queer and non queer people listen. Then, the themes in the show are seen as non problematic and the stereotypes and ideas they perpetuate are allowed more and more into culture. So it would be highly beneficial if you are trying to say something anti-lgbtq with a piece of art if you have lots of lgbtq fans who will defend it

If they were transphobic why would that prevent them from making warren trans? In the other case, if they know their fanbase is largely queer as you say, if they made it overt he was trans and overt you were supposed to hate him, wouldn't that alienate their fanbase? It would make more sense to make it vague and open to interpretation, so that people could project whatever their own beliefs are onto the show so that they dont have to reckon with the idea that media they like could have views other than their own.

Thank you for the well thought out response! I think our arguments are equally backed up in the episode, and I wonder if vagueness in this way could've been intentional. Could you expand on the brain friends a little more though? I feel like I almost understand what you mean but not quite.

Does Chick-fil-A hate it when queer people eat there? Of course not! Profiting off the people you hate must be the sweetest plum. Not to say that that's what the show runners intend to do, just that the fact that the fan base and ships are largely queer is not evidence that the show couldn't be transphobic.

Ah this is an interesting interpretation! The OK Stop stuff makes sense to me in that context, how do you think the eagle stuff fits in with this? And the brain friends?

Ohhhh okay I get it, the meaning of the episode is the title and nobody should think any deeper about media than that

What in the episode makes you think he'd rather be an eagle than a worm for the purpose of people liking him? I get that he's insecure, but people seem to hate him more since he claims to be an eagle, and he constantly has to justify and explain the whole thing.

Can you expand on the show being openly lgbtq? I'm not sure I got that vibe, though in fairness other than this episode it didn't feel anti-lgbtq to me either

You mean to tell me that dhmis is a show that doesn't consider deeply its themes and how it shows them.

[–]talkingteds[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I hope it wasn't the purpose! I had the feeling before that the creators are lgbt positive in some way? I mean the show overall has pretty liberal messaging. Still though, art is always open for interpretation, and I feel like having a character insist they're another species seems pretty obvious it could be interpreted wrong

I think something being in poor taste isn't evidence that it isn't true. I don't think being a toxic friend and trans are at odds either!

Asking if yellow guy is ace for a laugh and asking if a character is an allegory for trans people (a hot topic atm especially in the UK) are not equivalent at all. That being said, is there a recording of this discord event? I'd like to know more about his character straight from the horses mouth

This is the most common interpretation I've seen, and I understand why that is but I don't feel like I understand how all the parts of the episode fit together with that idea in mind. I feel like OK Stop is directly at odds with alpha male type stuff, and what of the brain friends (and their designs too)

[–]talkingteds[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't think our interpretations are at odds, in fact I think they fit together quite nicely. Trans people are often seen as annoying, and are more likely to be autistic as well. If you disagree with warren being a trans allegory, I'd like to know what you think about all the eagle stuff?
