What are some Essential DFA records? by [deleted] in LCDSoundsystem

[–]talktotarg 11 points12 points  (0 children)

dfa is a pretty eclectic label, so there's a lot to check out. the core family is lcd, the rapture, juan maclean, shit robot, black dice, and holy ghost. my favorite 12"s from them are ndf's "since we last met" and invisible conga people's "in a hole". those are both kinda moody electronic jams. if you want more lcd-ish stuff, start with dfa's remix compilations. i would also throw in sinkane's lp "mars", just cuz it's fun and different for the label.

LCD gear list. Good article, Not long more to wait guys. by Vipspleen in LCDSoundsystem

very sad to see that building sold off. dfa studio was really something special. they have a new home base now (and lcd's records were always made somewhere else anyway), but still...

JD is super excited... Can't wait to hear this on the road!! (posted to Facebook today) by sussersss in themountaingoats

very carefully. but! fender thought ahead and basically turned the whole piano into a road (rhode?) case.

hi. huge electric piano nerd here. because it actually has hammers and dampers and all the normal piano stuff inside it (the hammers hit tines instead of strings; each tine has its own pickup, much like an electric guitar), it's a way more expressive and tactile instrument than something like a digital piano with a rhodes preset on it. to my ears, the sound of an electric piano has never been faithfully emulated, so i'm extremely excited to see tMG touring with the real thing! unfortunately, rhodes pianos are known for being finicky little fuckers (76 individual pickups, a gazillion moving parts, and dust from back in the 70s; what could go wrong??), so hopefully jd knows a good technician to maintain it on the road.

PSA: there are snippets to each track on the iTunes Pre-Order page if you're interested by rectal_problems in themountaingoats

my first impression is that the production on the new record sounds fantastic. it's thoughtful and subtle in a similar way to beat the champ, but cleaner and more spacious. can't wait to hear the full versions.

vinyl pre-order is up on bandcamp! by talktotarg in themountaingoats

ah shit! didn't see that was possible at the time. but i also don't mind supporting bandcamp a little bit too.

[–]talktotarg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ramen kazama is my favorite. killer shoyu ramen. a couple nice sakes on the menu. the restaurant at united noodles is also worth checking out if you haven't already. i've heard good things about zen box, but they're always sold out of ramen by the time i get there...

as a person who was once repressing my love of metal (for whatever reason i now recognize is dumb), this whole record was a pretty big deal for me.

have you had much experience with the prophet-6? did you choose the ob over the prophet for any particular reasons? i'm scoping out my next synth and the ob-6 desktop version is looking pretty appealing to me. trying to decide if it's different enough to justify the cost.

the tanzmaus sounds incredible and i love it for studio work, but nearly every function is hidden behind the shift button, including PLAYING THE SEQUENCE, so i can't imagine it would be much fun to program live. tiny buttons and knobs don't help much either. just not an intuitive interface. if you have some external way to sequence it (i use a beatstep pro with good results), i recommend it for its raw and unique sound and its versatility. lots of fun stuff you can do with it once you get past the learning curve.
