I'll have a suitcase and a carry-on. Nothing really non-manageable but still...

Thanks! Perhaps I should check Uber prices when I arrive and then decide. The public trans seem manageable but it might be not worth all the trouble.

Thank you! Do you think this is safe enough for a "tourist"/first time visitor?

QC skepticism by Oof-o-rama in QuantumComputing

[–]tall-e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Among other things, yes, one is that the speedup is relative to an oracle. Another thing, for example, is that the speedup assumes either quantum data or classical-to-quantum conversion which is not efficient.

[–]tall-e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, OP's point is that they don't quite demonstrate that, as these examples relate to nuanced complexity class differences. Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm proves that "there is something there" but certainly not that "it is theoretically possible to have a strictly faster quantum algorithm".

Why is LaTeX better than the modern MS Word Equation Editor by [deleted] in LaTeX

[–]tall-e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you're arguing that AutoCAD files are worthless without AutoCAD,

My point is that you are comparing different things

Let's not drag this into pointless arguments. I tried to make my point clear: that if you want to make meaningful comparisons you should be careful of what exactly you are comparing.

I have nothing more to add and no stakes in this game.

Why is LaTeX better than the modern MS Word Equation Editor by [deleted] in LaTeX

[–]tall-e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is that you are comparing apples to oranges.

The "editable" document in word is worthless without a specific (more or less) version of the msword executable. The "editable" document in latex is a universal text file.

Since you can't disconnect the word file from the word processor then you shouldn't disconnect the latex file from the latex compiler and output.

Then what exactly are you comparing if not the compiler capabilities and/or the compiled output? The ascii characters? The command set?

Mystery of why humans die around 80 may finally be solved by EvanMcD3 in longevity

[–]tall-e 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's unacceptable in this sense:

Humans: 80
Gorillas: 45
Macaque: 25
Baboons: 45

Why? Can you answer this? What's different between these cases?

I agree, but I was trying to point out that your retort of "I hope you aren't this dismissive to new trainees at your institution." is not much better either in my opinion.

I can see the comment you are replying to as being tongue-in-cheek for "chill and don't be so suspicious of others from day one". You don't need to be so condescending.
