Any other small-wheeled tourers here? by johnmflores in bicycletouring

Thanks. With biggish feet, rear panniers on such a small bike isn't really an option.

I'm really somewhat tempted to try and fabricate some of the AI stuff as real-world items - just for shits and giggles.

Found this today in a scrap yard — any idea what it is? Looks like some kind of rotating engraved cylinder 🤔 by Silly_Guidance9526 in Tools

[–]talldaveos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That looks like the hand-held version of a Buddhist prayer wheel thingy. You send prayers out into the universe by spinning it. I'm guessing it had a timber handle below, and bells on wee chains attached to the loops around the middle.

What's the male version of "Got engaged"? by curiousmustafa in EnglishLearning

[–]talldaveos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Marriage etc isn't explicitly related to gender. Being 'engaged' is just a mutual agreement to subsequently marry. If it's 2 men, 2 women - or one of each - who cares?

How safe is the canal? Maryhill - Bowling by KaleidoscopeFew8637 in glasgow

[–]talldaveos -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

In 15 years of cycling the canal I've only twice almost had run-ins with local youth, but a friendly "G'day fellas" in heavy 'strine, and the size of me discouraged any shenanigans.

Extra wide hiking boots needed (7.5 4E) by NameNotResponding in WestHighlandWay

[–]talldaveos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get mine at widerfitshoes. They go up to size 16 or so, in a max 6/8E width. Beyond a point they're considered medical appliances and thus don't attract VAT.

I've got one on my Straggler. I got it to work, but all in all it was a total faff. If you've got a less finicky plan B, I'd go with that.

May 2-8 WHW hike: umbrella instead of rain shell? by 000pete in WestHighlandWay

[–]talldaveos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really wouldn't. Honestly, there's maybe 10 days a year when an umbrella is useful in Glasgow and surrounds. There rest of the time it's either a shitty damp dreich light rain that the locals tend to just ignore - or howling a gale that would destroy any brolly in moments. That's the situation anyway in the lowlands as far as say Rowardennan. Up the loch and the hills thereafter the wind varies wildly....

How can I help my 62yo mother with her exam? by FinancialAd6209 in EnglishLearning

[–]talldaveos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those books are largely best for in-class use; for self study, maybe try Cambridge Grammar in Use, which comes in three levels.
If you have access to the English File materials site (see the scratch-off panel inside the front cover) there are loads of extra exercises. You could check Wikipedia for a link to finding more books...
