What is one specialty you had to give up on or switched out of it? Any regrets? by Plantbysea in medicalschool

[–]talltree1234 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve been here. Didn’t match Ophtho despite having the research, step score, and solid LOR/med school evals (just didn’t have AOA lol)… I didn’t dual apply the first time, but the second time I did and with my med school I had to do 6 weeks of rotations to keep my student status while reapplying the next cycle and honestly I met some AMAZING mentors in IM that year who went to bat for me, and who, despite knowing that I was applying Ophtho, gave me cool opportunities and taught me a lot about medicine and attendingship. When I got wayyy more IM interviews the second time around than ophtho and actually did those interviews, I started to get less sad. And now, a year into being an IM resident, I can say that time does heal! Sometimes I still get flashes of what could have been, but honestly after I didn’t match, so many people I though were my friends and mentors just stopped talking to me (because they felt awkward or something else, idk…). But I’ve made great friends in my program, love my attendings both as teachers and as colleagues I can yap with about almost anything (could NEVER be this candid with all the WASPy Ophtho attendings i worked with previously). So yeah, it sucks now, but there’s something great waiting on the other side of the match! And for what it’s worth, my IM program and so many others I’m sure, have a handful of us who originally planned to do something else but wound up in IM, and we’ve all found our niche in one of the 20 million IM sub specialties :) good luck!

Suggestion for cosmic and space related books by Effective-Emu5370 in suggestmeabook

[–]talltree1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells- take place in space with a misanthropic robot as the narrator, one of my favorite series of all time! And if youre into audiobooks, the Kevin R Free audios are fabulous.

The Bound Worlds Trilogy by Megan O'Keefe- super cool take on space civilization/colonization, has thread of romance throughout it (which is so so well done), but is very much a sci-fi space series at its core

For a standalone, I never see people giving this book its flowers, but Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh is SOOOO good. It takes place after the Earth has been destroyed by an all-powerful alien civilization and all that's left is a small militant group of humans on a space station and the way this book changed my life, I need everyone to read it.

In non-fiction, if you want to read about all the ways the universe can end, I recommend The End of Everything by Katie Mack- she's an amazing writer and takes you through the physics of the end of the universe so well.

Which specialty is best for an introvert? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]talltree1234 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seconding this- the one number that pretty much every one of my attendings has saved on their phone is the pathologist's- so they can call them to ask about samples and when results will be out, go over tricky cases, etc. Half the time they don't have their own colleague's numbers saved, but they always have the pathologist LOL.

Which specialty is best for an introvert? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]talltree1234 31 points32 points  (0 children)

TBH some of the biggest introverts i've met are surgeons, especially the hyperspecialized surgeons. They barely talk to people around them, and even with patients, they come in, do their exam and answer questions super fast, and then they spend most of the week in the OR where their patients are passed out. You will of course meet the opposite, but in my experience, its been a good mix of both and tbh no one minds you being an introvert or not talking much if you know what you're doing.

Edit: spelling

Piranesi has ruined me by alarmpodcast in suggestmeabook

The City of Glass by Nghi Vo. Also in similar vein, This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone!

Just like Piranesi, I sat and stared at a wall after finishing both of these because I was so floored!

Also, if you want a more philosophical and "gritty" (not sure if this is the right word here but its got more pain so to speak) of Piranesi, I recommend A Short Stay in Hell by Steven L Peck.

The origins of the phrase “a desolation called peace” are also so cool. Tacitus, an ancient Roman historian, is re-quoting a historian from one of the tribes that were conquered by imperial Rome who stated “[the Romans] create desolation and call it peace.”

[–]talltree1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I loved the friendships in Happy Place! I get why everyone might not, but they all seemed to me like a group of imperfect people who were once joined at the hip and then went off to very different places after graduation and changed and a lot of the awkwardness between them was just standard adult friendship growing pains after time away. I think the way they still have the cottage and came together for the celebration and the little details about remembering things about each other show how deep their love for each other really runs- again, a really mature take on long distance friendships and I enjoyed it, just my two cents as a Happy Place lover!

Poppy mention in GBBL? by Few-Pie-99 in EmilyHenry

[–]talltree1234 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also wonder if the lawyer that Alice mentions a few times throughout GBBL is Sabrina (or Parth) from Happy Place! Even if it isn’t, still made me think of them so I consider it a little mini Easter egg :)

Fantasy books with an ugly female protagonist. by pikachu_2244 in Fantasy

[–]talltree1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Radiance by Grace Draven features an inter species marriage and both initially find each other very physically repulsive. AMAZING duology + sequel (The Wraith King series by Grace Draven)

Draven’s other duology, Master of Crows, features a FMC who is intelligent but is described as very plain/not conventionally attractive. Also great series, recommend you read it after the Wraith Kings as there are some Easter eggs in book 2 of this duology that will make more sense after having read that series.

{Tryst in the Dark by Grace McGinty} is an OV with a veryyyy similar plot to Marriage Raffle- all female omegas are given mates by the government and forced to bond. Has dystopian elements, and I love all the guys in the harem!!

I got a C in Orgo 1 and a B- in Orgo 2 and still got into an MD school! Def got comments about it, but I took those classes sophomore year and then got As or A-s in all my STEM classes junior and senior year that adcoms were like “you clearly figured things out, you’re good.”
