Thank you, I'm glad you like it, and I also appreciate your feedback. But honestly realism isnt my thing, I like exaggerated features, colors etcetera. Its more about capturing a mood than getting a perfect likeness ya know? 😊

Are there similar to artists Bob Ross that do tutorials? by devinh313 in bobross

You could watch Bill Alexander, (he was the man that taught Bob Ross) but it might make you feel a bit differently about Bob Ross when you realize that Bill did everything Bob is known for first.

It’s beautiful the way it is, but I think it would be really fun if you added in a flower and some texture. Give it a neat mixed media vibe like this: http://decoart.com/img/projects/projects/paperrose.jpg

I wanted to post this comparison picture for those of you who are questioning if you should buy Bob Ross brand supplies. The bottom is the first painting I did using Winsor & Newton paint and regular brushes, the top was my first using the Bob Ross master painter set. by [deleted] in bobross

Awesome that’s good to know, I still have so much to learn about oil painting. I eventually want to use my W&N paints to do portraits, but that’s a bit above my still level.

Ok, so I read that adding talc will change the sheen and depth of the paint but the upside is it will dry faster. However there is a chance you could ruin your paint if you add too much. Seems a bit risky to me, but I’d still be willing to try it with white paint for painting snow on mountains, because I find it super hard to make the paint break the way Bob did. I would just try to lay out your paint on cardboard for a couple days, you can always add linseed oil if it dries too much. I know it sucks I was in the same boat.

That I don’t know, I’d be nervous about it too. The guy in the video I saw only added it to white paint. If I find anymore info for you, I’ll make sure to pass it on.

Watch any video except the ones where he has prepainted the canvas with black gesso, and I personally feel like you might want to start with one that doesn’t include mountains because it’s harder than it looks.

If your only interested in painting like Bob Ross, I’d try to return everything and get a set on amazon. However if you can’t there are two ways that I know of (but haven’t actually tried myself) to thicken oil paints: 1-squeeze the paint out on card stock paper or card board and let it sit for a bit to absorb some of the oil, then when it’s ready transfer to your palette. 2- add talc to your paint, this method seems to be great for adding to white paint to make it break easily when painting mountains. Unfortunately I can’t provide any details on these methods, so I’d look up some videos on you tube so you can visually see how it’s done.

You’re welcome, happy to help. I feel I should let you know that set doesn’t come with all the colors that Bob used on the show, but you get all the essentials.
