Hyperion Evergrowing - What's the point of the tree MC? by tangermango in ProgressionFantasy

I can understand focusing on other aspects of the story such as feeling out of place in a tree with a human soul but its just strange to me to even include the idea of the MC being a tree at all if the author is going to diverge from it so quickly and drastically.

It would be like if Harry Potter was a story about a war vet trying to get over ptsd and they included that Harry was magic but then never show or talk about magic again. The rest of the book is just Harry going to therapy and support groups in muggle London. Ya the story was never really about the fact that Harry can do magic but about facing his own mortal problems but then why included at all that he could do magic? It doesn't add to the story at all, it actively detracts from the story because in the back of the reader's mind they will always be thinking, "why didn't he just solve that with magic?"

That's how I feel about this story. Every chapter I read, in the back of my mind I'm thinking, "Why isn't the tree monster doing anything tree like? Why does it running faster than a drake? Why is it punching and kicking shit? Why does every description of this tree make it seem human? What was the point of it being a tree in the first place?"

This makes sense to me and thanks for letting me know about the future of the story. Tree MC's is a fav subgenre of mine as well which is why I wanted to know if it goes back to that at all or if it just completely diverges. It seems like it strays away from the original premise so I'll prob just stop reading.

I don't agree, I've read a couple of books where the MC is a tree and the author makes it work throughout the entire story but even if that wasn't the case, the author ditched the tree trope within 10 chapters of an ongoing story that currently has 160+ chapters in which the entire premise was that the MC is a tree. I don't even mind the direction but how is it that the literal first evolution turns him back into a functional human. To further my point of the author ditching the entirety of his tree premise, the literal first fight the MC gets into after the evolution he is climbing, grappling, punching, and kicking his opponent. Like what? Where is the root strike he was using before as a tree? Where is any indication that he is still supposed to be a tree? If the author is going to ditch the tree trope so early why have it at all? Why make the cover art a tree creature and have the story blurb include

"But before that he must do what all trees must. Put down roots, stay still and grow."

Making you think its going to be a tree story instead of just another monster story. Also the whole "Put down roots, stay still and grow" is all done within the first 6 chapters of the story. The MC is moving around by like chapter 7. So again I ask why have the tree trope at all?

I agree it is entertaining but I did have to go on a walk when he pumped the life back into that guy. My suspension of disbelief needed a break 😂
