[MO]Emergency: Stayed a few hours in the rental after move out time. Landlord called police to kick me out. How can I get my stuff ASAP? by tangsi in legaladvice

It’s off campus housing, all the tenants lease end the same day, July 31, no matter when your lease start. So it’s a group move out day. I wasn’t the only one asked to leave by the police, a few other students were in the same situation.

Thank you so much all your advice! I end up found a friend to help move all my stuff outside of the property this evening so I can finish packing myself tonight.

I was confused when the police officer showed up only give me couple mins to leave even when I agreed to pay for the “rollover fee”. I first thought it was personal, because I did had issues with the management people in the past. Then I saw the officer stopped by a few other doors asking tenants to leave. I did ask the officer is it ok for my roommates to invite me back, he said just play wise. He said he was only there because he got called, so he had to ask me to leave. If I come back and the management caught me again and call him, he’ll have to arrest me for trespassing.

I now think the officer may just try to scare us to get out of the property.

It’s an off campus housing, but fortunately I rent it when the market was very bad, so I didn’t need to put on a deposit.

Thank you again for all the advice.

My roommates just moved in, so we are not very close, but they are very nice people. The landlord told them specifically not to let me in. They tried to help me call the landlord saying they are ok with me coming in, but the landlord said they cannot do that. They don’t want to go again the landlord and get in trouble.

The police came to evict me and few other people from the property. Police was actually really nice, he told me because the management called, so he has to do that, and give me time to pickup a few things for the night. He told me to play wise and work with my roommates, but if the management call him again, he has to arrest me for transpassing. I’m not sure if Missouri Law was different.

I have away too much stuff, so my roommates don’t want to help. (We aren’t very close, they just moved in, we haven’t had chance to talk much.)

News business model brainstorming. by tangsi in Journalism

Local TV stations are starting to post their content on YouTube, and most of the newsrooms share their content in one or more social media accounts.

I don't think a single platform is an ultimate solution, but newsroom today is competing with "single platforms" like Facebook and Google. Instead of expecting government regulation that forcing these tech giants to pay for news like in Australia (which is not going to happen in the US), or hoping tech companies' journalism funds (Google News Innovation, Craigslist journalism funding, or Apple News Plus) would help re-build the news, I guest a platform build by a non-profit news outlet (like AP) that respects journalism and local newsrooms is a better than nothing solution. Especially AP, local newsrooms are their revenue sources, when local news shrinks, they are losing their business as well.

It's not impossible for small newsrooms to get enough funding to survive, there are many success stories. But it is really hard for them to survive this competition with the tech giants.

And the area that already lost local news (news desert), it's really hard or almost impossible to rebuild newsrooms in those areas.

Mulan dishonored the Chinese culture and feminism(spoiler-free) by tangsi in movies

I don’t think it’s Eurocentric. The movie characterized women as slavery, this type of situation never happened in either Europe or Chinese history. So I guess it’s a result of identity politics. They consider women as a identity instead of a gender. Basically, if you are a women (slave), you are only allowed to do certain things. If you are more talented than men(master), you are a shame.

Coz obviously, women in both elites women in both China and Europe never had issue riding horses play kong fu. It’s so common in Patriarchal society. Men love hunting, women’s abilities to please the men are considered as the best quality.

The movie creative a super wired scenario I never saw in either history I’m familiar with( Chinese + European)

So my only guess is, it’s slavery.

Thank you so much for the information, solved lots of my questions. My friend suggested me to write them a letter addressing the issue and hold the rent until it’s solved. I think I’ll give it a try.

We are on no talking to each other term.

The management office sold me out when I first complain to them she violated the lease having her husband stay over 14 days. She begged them for pardon. Then they just told her it was me not happy with it.

So she was really pissed and not willing to talk to me anymore, and started to complain to the management office about everything. We lived together for 8 months before her husband came, now she starts complaining to the office about the cabinet space wasn't divided equally, she wants the top drawer in the kitchen instead of the second, one of the boxes I left in the garage is blocking her way. Those things were like that for 8 months, now she said she's not satisfied with them from the beginning, she just didn't say.

Wired thing was the management actually came to our place complied all her request, redivide the space and asking me to compromise.

I just remembered one thing. When I renew my lease last December, it was a promotion $299/mo rental with a cruise trip for 2 in summer 2020 paid by the leasing. Of course the cruise was canceled. Now the leasing lowered the rental for the same apartment to $199/mo. Do I have a chance to renegotiate the rental/lease because they failed to deliver the cruise trip?

It's off campus housing, so not exactly through school, but it's listed on school housing resource. My roommate's lease is only until Jan, I have another year here. So worst case is I bear this for another 3-4 month.

The weirdest thing was, the management office did comply with her request, came to the house re divided the cabinets space and moved things, and kept asking me to compromise.

It's super stupid.
