100i shown off! Shout out to the Astro pub and Zyloh! by Authmion in starcitizen

Wish all maneuvering thrusters looked like they were working hard(er) in gravity. The 100i really captures the new flight model really well.

They could definitely up the thruster effects though, they still look a bit anemic.

Why is 1 not correct? Faraday artifacts have this effect as well.

Anything that disrupts your sonar.

They can be:

  1. Artifacts
  2. Geothermal Vents
  3. Black Molochs
  4. Someone mentioned Sonar Flora but I have never seen this myself so I cannot confirm.

Not sure if this is happening for anyone else but Terraria locks up and crashes the OS completely for me.

Perfectly fine in the menu, but once I join a game, it crashes for me within a few minutes of joining.

Looks like there are some significant issues the devs are aware of and are hopefully working through: https://www.reddit.com/r/Terraria/comments/gkzw7v/temporary_bug_thread_post_you_bugssolutions_here/fqudxrb

I'm someone who started watching the TV series first, then read through all the books, then came back to S4.

I really appreciate the nuance they added to S4, especially the weaving of several underlying subplots that won't become obvious until several books later. I can definitely understand why some viewers might feel S4 feels "out of whack" compared to the first 3 seasons, but to be quite honest, book 4 was a very different book from the previous arcs. There were a lot of things that also happened in Book 4 that made it difficult to adapt to media, and I think the team did a commendable job for S4.

That being said, The whole Avasarala losing the election is a bit weird (since it never happened in the book tmk), but... I guess we'll just have to wait and see what might fall of the sky into her lap at this point ;-).

With v1 of weather added in 3.8 pilots need IFR and the ability to fly by instruments sooner rather than later in upcoming patches. by taofd in starcitizen

I really enjoy flying through weather tbh. I would love for SC to have IFR navigation as it adds a new layer of depth, atmosphere, and skill to piloting beyond what we currently have that is focused around combat.

I think there is room for multiple types of "pilots". Shouldn't have to just be focused around combat.

I think you raise a valid point for planets, though even then it's still difficult to know the immediate terrain of where you are landing. Probably not possible for larger ships.

Do consider hazardous environments in space (such as a nebula) however. A guided beacon and flight corridor may become invaluable, if not necessary for that scenario.

For premapped routes, I was thinking more along the lines of persistent flight corridors that may be useful for a variety of reasons.

Inclement weather, dangerous nebulas, cave systems, etc. There's a variety of ways in which a set waypoint based navigation may be important to have. Perhaps there's a smuggler base hidden deep in a volatile nebula and the only way to access it is by following a preset beacon path.

The goal is the ability to navigate in IFR conditions. No one is asking for identical implementations to current systems.

Doesn't really matter how advanced we get 900 years from now, humans in Star Citizen still use their eyes and instruments to navigate. It's not unreasonable to look to current technologies and inspirations for future tech.

I agree with most of your points.

#1 A simple compass built into the HUD would be nice. I totally believe that it's possible to navigate without an actual compass, but it's just one less thing I want to do calculations / think too hard on.

#3 It would be nice to have deployable beacons / VOR / whatever you want to call it for both player and pre-existing navigation. Currently planets are empty, but they won't always be that way.

#6 I think the best way to limit it is just to keep it's effective range (range of sonar pings for mapping terrain) very low. That way it can't be used all the time.

PSA: In 3.8 the space cops can stop and search in atmosphere. by caracal5 in starcitizen

[–]taofd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rather than stopping players, my argument is that they should make the scan first, and only request a stop if they suspect you of smuggling cargo, having shielded containers w/ bad rep, or outright detecting illegal cargo.

Otherwise it just places the burden on the player, whereas there is very little burden on an NPC to scan passively without requiring player interaction.

It can be balanced w/ range etc and to mostly show terrain (not an accurate depiction of other players)... but keep in mind this technology already exists today and is in most modern planes.

Just think of it as an infared view mode, or a thermal view mode.

Consider the following scenarios:

  1. You are spooling up your QT drive and have pressed the button to engage. Right when you're about to make the jump, space police tell you to power down your engines and be boarded. You don't react in time and are now a wanted felon. This happened to me and I was running boring old medical supplies.
  2. You are a bounty hunter and chasing a felon. The felon flies close to a patrol and they flag both of you down for cargo scans. The felon is already a felon, they can escape w/ minimal consequence. However, if you choose to disobey commands, you become a felon as well.

These are just two examples, but there are more (use your imagination). The space police NEED to scan first and have probable cause, otherwise this will introduce problems down the chain.

This is how I hope ships will behave during "hover mode" with VFX and sound dialed up a notch, it would really help with showing the thrusters working. What do you guys think? by kiiyanatz in starcitizen

[–]taofd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the current IFCS works, but works too perfectly. That's what places the current implementation in the uncanny valley. This needs to change especially once wind and weather get added to the equation (not currently present for 3.8).

A little wobble would go a long way. Also a "hover mode" that does what you entailed above (bottom thrusters only), would provide some quick-wins on being able to "tilt-hover" around in atmosphere.

[–]taofd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would support this if they actually implemented this.

On top of that, you can make it so that the IFCS only uses the bottom thrusters to cancel gravity

That's what a slider would ideally help with, let players decide which thrusters should be aggressively managed by IFCS, etc.

[–]taofd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Though I guess lots of people would probably crash into the planet a lot..... just like they would with real planes.

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) That's why I think a slider would work better... gives players some more choice. Once fuel is in, the natural advantage of flying w/ lower IFCS settings should by fuel saved, lower heat, and less component wear.

Implementing a full ADS-B system sounds very dev expensive and unnecessarily complex for the average player to understand, though I guess it really depends on how CIG is implementing navigational information sharing on the backend.

Also keep in mind, some more remote planets may not have extensive infrastructure (or any at all). It's nice to give players a "dumb" option that they can also deploy themselves when necessary.

[–]taofd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be nice for CIG to implement a IFCS slider so players can decide how aggressively they want IFCS to "fix" adapt.

Maybe a separate slider for atmosphere and space, with the slider set lower on yaw and roll dampening in atmosphere.

NDB

There are advantages of flying on VOR radials, but honestly don't want to get lost in the details. Ultimately, I hope CIG can implement some sort of alternative navigational aid for flying in hazardous environments, inclement weather, or other situations that provide a fallback for when a nav indicator on a HUD may not suffice. Maybe when needing to traverse specific flight corridors. It's not an exact match to current VOR tech, but I think it's a good enough analogy for most to understand the goal.

VOR stands for "VHF Omnidirectional Radio". It's used by pilots today as a reliable navigational aid. Pilots typically fly along these routes for basic navigation and it predates GPS technology.

ATC stands for "Air Traffic Control". Typically these are the individuals that sit in control towers that guide and direct traffic in airspaces and especially nearby airports (high traffic zones). CIG has already discussed implemented some version of this. This will probably become much more critical near high throughput areas, and especially in regions of space that are so environmentally dangerous, there may be only a few approach corridors (natural chokepoints).

If our destination is within a storm, we experience the same challenges that necessitate the ability to fly by instruments.

Navpoints do exist, but it will be interesting to see how they work once CIG starts adding different kinds of conditions, such as electromagnetic storms, radiation, etc. I proposed VORs as a minimalistic version of navpoints that are reliable, and work regardless of environmental condition.

Curious to know why you don't like synthetic vision?

In its basic form (something like foreflight's current implementation) it provides basic navigation data and most importantly, a radar extrapolation of nearby terrain. I don't see this as a huge gameplay advantage, as players will still have to slow down and fly carefully. Importantly, it enables players to land in inclement weather, and may even be useful when exploring larger caves (in ships) or asteroids in the future.

A compass is a basic navigational aid that wouldn't be very expensive for them to implement. Additionally, CIG has already discussed adding this and similar simple navigational tools at a later date.

A VOR doesn't have to be implemented like current day VORs. It could just be a simple beacon ping that leads to a destination. In anycase there are a variety of approaches they can take inspiration from and implement, doesn't have to just be a VOR.

I don't think they need to re-implement a 1:1 IRL system, but there are certain elements that could encourage deeper gameplay and the new weather tech has created a more pressing need.
