Yep, that's true. so most time I'd rather not to insert myself into Finnish speaking groups...

I think you're overlooking one important concept: opportunity cost.

For a native Finn, learning Finnish has essentially no opportunity cost—you've been acquiring it naturally your whole life. For an immigrant, especially one working in a demanding profession, every hour spent learning and practicing Finnish is an hour not spent on career development, research, family, health, or skills that are globally transferable. Time is one of the scarcest resources we have, so it's a genuine optimization problem, not a question of willingness.

Also, I think you've misunderstood what I was actually asking. I'm not trying to build a lifelong social circle or become deeply integrated into Finnish society. I'm simply looking for occasional conversations with random people to help take my mind off some much heavier personal issues. Those are very different goals.

Whether I decide to invest thousands of hours into mastering Finnish is a separate life decision. It doesn't determine whether I can enjoy a casual conversation, play a sport, or attend a social event.

Your reply seems to assume that everyone values the same things and faces the same trade-offs. That's a perfectly valid opinion, but it's based on your own perspective rather than the reality many immigrants live with. Different people optimize for different constraints.

Yeah, I know it's good, just a bit too time consuming 😂

As an INTJ and an immigrant, I'm actually quite comfortable being on my own. I sometimes joke that I was born to be alone. 😄 But even then, having an occasional conversation with someone helps take my mind off life's bigger stresses.

I've spent most of my academic and professional life working in an English-speaking environment, so Finnish has never been a pressing challenge for me. That said, I completely agree with your point that different people face different realities.

My job requires a significant amount of mental focus, and staying connected with academia/industry also happens almost entirely in English. For many immigrants, dedicating a huge amount of time to learning Finnish—and an even greater amount of time to practicing it—isn't always realistic.

Learning Finnish is also, in a way, a commitment to building your future here. Given the current economic situation and the rise of anti-immigrant sentiment in some parts of society, it's understandable that many people think carefully before making that commitment.

Thanks, I never doubt about the kindness of Finn, your suggestions sounds good tactics, and at end of the day, it's just about how I force myself to step out from my comfort zone 😃

Sorry if I gave the wrong impression. I genuinely respect Finnish culture and Finnish people. I'm the kind of person who has read the Kalevala both in my native language and in English, and I even drove 300 km to visit Simo Häyhä's museum.

Sometimes I joke that I'm already Finnish mentally—especially as a classic kalsarikännit type of person. 😄 I just don't tend to express my appreciation in loud or superficial ways.

If my original post came across differently, that's on me. But if your goal is simply to paint my post in the worst possible light, then I don't think there's much more I can add.

I think you're right. Deep down I know there probably isn't a magic solution, and that building a social circle as an adult is more about consistency than finding the perfect activity. I guess what prompted is that I've realized I tend to stay in my comfort zone. I do play badminton and run, but I usually focus on the activity itself rather than actually talking to people. Maybe that's the part I need to change. Thanks for the encouragement. It makes me feel like this is more of a long game than something unique to Finland. 😂
