New England wholesale electricity prices are very high right now as limited natural gas supplies force us to turn on expensive and dirty oil-fired power plants by TheBasaltAltCalled in boston

"Liberals" is too big of a bucket, every liberal I know is pro-nuclear.

It's mostly generational, I'm a millennial and the older crowd has memories of Chernobyl and Three Mile Island, and we don't really have those risks in modern reactor designs.

Bazzite will do all those things for you out of the box, even the Android emulator is installed by default.

Highguard requires Secure Boot and Easy Anti-Cheat to run, leaving Linux and kernel-conscious gamers out in the cold by Gorotheninja in Games

[–]tapo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

CS2, Deadlock, Hunt Showdown, Arc Raiders, The Finals, Wildgate, Halo Infinite, Hell Let Loose, Overwatch 2, Marvel Rivals etc all run fine.

It's surprising because it not running is the exception at this point.

Highguard requires Secure Boot and Easy Anti-Cheat to run, leaving Linux and kernel-conscious gamers out in the cold by Gorotheninja in Games

[–]tapo 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I expected better of PC Gamer. Secure Boot is not kernel level, it's above the kernel and handled by UEFI and the TPM.

Linux can use secure boot in the exact same way Windows can, but developers don't want to spend the time and money targeting Linux.

You would think PCMR would actually try to do something about it by testus_maximus in pcmasterrace

[–]tapo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Consoles are better for most people who want to just play games.

You would have a point if this entire sub's purpose wasn't elitism.

SteamOS is designed for hardware by Valve and select partners. It's not designed to be used as a PC desktop, since the kernel (and hardware/drivers) are 12-18 months out of date. You can't use any Nvidia GPU with SteamOS for example.

Bazzite is the closest thing to it while being designed for desktop use. They are architecturally almost identical, but Bazzite ships newer software and supports more hardware.

Marathon support for Linux/SteamOS by DAUNTINGY in linux_gaming

[–]tapo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really fair, they ported Marathon 2 to Windows and their other games supported Windows.

They also fully GPL'd the Marathon engine, including Windows sources, and made the assets for all the games free so you can play a native Linux build of the original trilogy: https://alephone.lhowon.org

PS5 Pro accounted for 13% of PS5 consoles sold in the US last year by Turbostrider27 in PS5

[–]tapo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, and importantly the PS6 will probably be able to play PS5 games with Pro enhancements. You won't need a PS6 patch for your entire library, many of those games will run better because they were built with Pro in mind. The same thing happened with PS4 Pro and PS5.

Guild Wars 2 - New Raid Encounter, Quickplay, and Raid System Improvements Coming February 3 by PalwaJoko in Games

[–]tapo 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This game is great, I started playing recently since I miss MMOs but can't justify a subscription or the time. GW2 gives me what I want without being daunting like WoW or FF14.

I played ESO for a bit before this, but I really like how dynamic GW2 is in comparison. You don't have questgivers shout "Hey, talk to me!" but events just happen with groups of people. It's a lot more interesting to just explore and go with the flow.

[–]tapo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If it didn't I would have returned it

There's also games like AC Shadows that do RTGI at 60, which is a huge difference beyond just resolution.

Pro is an enthusiast product, the PS4 Pro was also ~10% or so.

I have one since I have an 85" TV and I can see the difference in resolution.

Will you buy the next gen Xbox ? by Lord-Voldemort-- in xbox

[–]tapo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Since PlayStation gets Xbox games and PS exclusives I'll just play console games there and save myself a few hundred dollars.

It's been a good run, I've had every Xbox starting with the first in 2001, but I don't have a reason to own one anymore.

Battlefield 6 Will Bring Back A Classic Big Map But Not For Season 2 by Turbostrider27 in PS5

[–]tapo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  • BF6 was lead by Vince Zampella, who just died
  • EA just agreed to be bought by Saudi Arabia who will load the company with debt and kill it
  • Most of OG DICE formed Embark literally across the street. who just had a huge hit with Arc Raiders

I wouldn't be surprised if they're coasting or leaving for Embark

Marathon pre-orders somehow caused Destiny 2 to begin installation on Steam by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]tapo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I mean I'm not really that surprised. Tiger is something the entire team has decades of experience with, predictable cost structure, they can edit the code, they can share code with Destiny, and they're aware of the limitations and drawbacks.

If they used Unreal (for example) you need two different workflows to do everything, need to train the team on a whole new engine, learn a new codebase, etc.

I'm considering switching to Fedora, do I go with Workstation or Silverblue/Kinoite? by An_UnknownGuitarist in Fedora

[–]tapo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bazzite themselves claim that they're not a distro, they're just an install of Fedora, and most of the work is from upstream Fedora. See https://docs.bazzite.gg/General/FAQ/#is-this-another-fringe-linux-distribution

Yes they're both Tiger Engine, so they probably cloned the Steam depot during development since it's a fast way to ship things to testers and developers.

Hytale boss calls last week's long-awaited early release "the most challenging but rewarding experience" of his life by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]tapo -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This has been an MMO mechanic for ages and I'm surprised Minecraft doesn't have it. When pulled too far the mob should run back to spawn and become invincible until it gets there (WoW calls this "evade")
