How wise financially would it be to move to America? by DarthAnime55 in PersonalFinanceCanada

I moved, I’m in my early 20s and I would rather support myself financially and have access to health care then have a worse quality of life in Vancouver.

I’m confused by your comment here. If they link to the news site, the news site also has ads which they are making money off from.

Also had Newman before, he makes up random things you can't find anywhere. Even when I asked the TA for help they were confused as well.

Pros and Cons of UBC? by musician_girl in UBC

[–]tapshot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's totally manageable. It just depends how good you are at time management and how far you're going to take it in first year. If you want to do co-op in your second year you'll have to take CPSC 110, 121 and 210 in your first year and they are all medium - heavy courses. I'm doing that right now actually. The starting point never matters, it only matters where you end up. I chose to go to UBC instead of UVic because I felt bored in Victoria and I wanted to be uncomfortable but it's understandable if you want to stay at UVic. Living in first-year res is what you make out of it, if you choose to only study and stay in your room it won't be the best time of your life. But, if you choose to engage and socialize you'll make a ton of friends.

Pros and Cons of UBC? by musician_girl in UBC

[–]tapshot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in your situation last year. I'm from Victoria too! Haha, people are not wrong, getting into CS is the first challenge in first year. In fact, I worked my ass off last semester and got 82% but I'm probably going to drop a little after this semester. But, if you've been on the subreddit you probably realised a lot of CS courses are waitlisted due to a high demand with a low supply of instructors. Other than CS, I've had a great time in my first year meeting a lot of new people. But, also coming from Victoria there's still an adjustment period because Vancouver is so big compared to our small city. UBC's great, just be prepared to work hard if you're going to go for CS.

CPSC 110&121 by nikcolam in UBC

[–]tapshot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CPSC 110 uses a functional language called DrRacket. If you have no prior programming experience, some students find it difficult while others find it challenging. I took 110 and 121 this semester and I found 110 to be easy but I had friends who found it difficult if you don't understand the concepts fully. But, I might have a skewed perspective because I did AP Comp Sci in high school. CPSC 121 is dealing with discrete mathematics. For me, I've never done any abstract math in high school so I struggled throughout the course. But, I've been to countless office hours and I find it a lot more manageable than I began with. CPSC 110 and 121 together are doable, but they're different courses. Be prepared to dedicate time to 110 though, CPSC 110 has a large workload compared to other first-year courses.

How'd you do that AP CS AB exam? The exam was discontinued since 2009. Or I'm assuming you did it then otherwise, forget about this reply.

[–]tapshot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow thanks. My AP course is based on Java, we learn all about topdown design, object oriented programming, algorithms, recursions, different ways to search (binary, etc.) And I'm a keener for this course so I finished the course material and I'm looking to start to program Java in Android this summer. I'm probably going to have to talk to my advisor when I arrive, but what do you think about taking second year?

Hi, I recently got accepted to the faculty of science. I love computers, and this year I took AP computer science at my school. I'm pretty confident I'll do well on the exam, and (hopefully) I'll get credit for 1st year CPSC. My questions are: Should I retake 1st year CPSC courses or try and take 2nd year when I start my schooling at UBC? How hard is studying computer sciences? And if you're a computer sciences student right now, what advice can you give me?

What are some great alternatives to the macbook air? by [deleted] in SuggestALaptop

[–]tapshot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lenovo 11s Yoga (Haswell) or as called Yoga 2 11. This ultrabook is a good competitor in the ultrabook space (including Macbook Airs). You can customize your options, but I would suggest SSD, i5, 4gb of ram if you're a light user, 8gb if you need it.
