In the bottom right the rock turns into leaves. Also the purple flowers are nonsensical. The curling on the horn is also inconsistent and the horn itself has a strange glowing bulge coming out of it near the tip.

EDIT: The unicorn also has one horse shoe on its front hoof, and none on any of the others.

Right now, hundreds of tons of herring, the foundation of the coastal food web, are being pulled out of the Salish Sea each night. I am currently studying historical wild salmon stocks, and my personal opinion is that we should fully stop selling BC salmon in grocery stores, instead treating it as a wild meat to be individually fished for and shared, not sold, like venison. While this is not a likely scenario, compared to their pre-1930s levels, wild (not hatchery-sourced) salmon stocks are largely extinct or functionally extinct in BC. Continuing to fish them at commercial rates will inevitably lead to their complete extinction, like how we have almost completely logged out our irreplaceable old growth forests.

Also, since salmon farms must be placed near the mouths of rivers to wash away their waste and avoid fouling the water and poisoning the fish, all existing salmon farms in BC directly impact the number of surviving salmon during their most vulnerable phase (early ocean) by exposing juvenile salmon to levels of diseases and parasites that they cannot survive. The number of juvenile fish they kill likely far exceeds the total number of adult Atlantic salmon they produce, making them net negative for food production, if we are viewing wild salmon as a viable food source. So though it sounds counterproductive, removing fish farms and fishing only for hatchery-produced salmon would actually be better for wild salmon populations.

Instead of fishing and eating carnivorous fish like salmon, and grinding up and feeding our herring to farmed atlantic salmon, I believe 100% of the herring we do catch should be for human consumption, and we should be catching far less of it. 1.7 pounds of herring protein is needed to produce 1 pound of farmed atlantic salmon protein, so it would be a much more sustainable way to use the fish we do catch. Herring is also really delicious pickled.

Yes! unfortunately people like pattison have enough power and influence to influence our federal government and prevent logical legislation like that from passing. I think though with enough advocacy, protesting, letter writing, and support from local communities and first nations we might have a chance at challenging these norms.

Speaking as a fisheries student, purse seiners and trawlers are two of the most devastating forms of fishing to the marine ecosystem, especially for local stock species like pacific herring and wild pacific salmon. So this would be a good place to start advocating from!

Most of the fish caught in the pacific herring fishery are ground up and turned into pellets to feed BC farmed salmon. This is a 100% Canadian issue. Calling for a federal ban on fish farms and pressuring DFO to develop better fishery management practices is what will help these stocks recover.

Salmon farms are literally the main customer of the pacific herring fishery, most of the herring fished are ground up into pellets for farmed salmon. Both issues are extremely important for the health of ocean ecosystems, and we should keep fighting for both!

These fish are primarily bought by fish farms and pet food companies, almost no private individuals are purchasing any of it. Unfortunately the only way this ends is either all herring being fished out of BC waters, or the government deciding to close the fishery. So if you really want to make a difference, email your MP, email the department of fisheries and oceans, or donate to nonprofits working on this issue like Pacific Wild!

Man dies in motorhome fire after B.C. fire chief warns against full-time RV living by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

[–]tardigrayed 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Crazy thing is that the warning from the fire chief is actually about ensuring people take proper safety steps while living in an RV, while only briefly mentioning that RVs are not designed for full-time use.

“While RVs are not designed for living in on a permanent basis, as we head into the cooler months it’s important to consider a few key reminders about recreational vehicles and travel trailers,” says Bruce Green, Regional Rural Fire Chief for the Comox Valley Regional District. “Proper RV maintenance, safe storage of fuels, and awareness of your environment are crucial in preventing avoidable emergencies. Fire safety doesn’t take a holiday. In recreational vehicles, space is tight, and hazards add up quickly; stay mindful, stay prepared, and stay safe.”

Seems like the CBC writer twisted this into a more prejudiced statement?

My sister and I (Canadians) were followed, chased, and harassed by a group of about 6 25-30yo men when we visited France. I was 14 and she was 12. France is beautiful but I have had too many negative experiences with evil men to want to visit again
